Of course a graduate of the Kshahrewar would have a fundamental misunderstanding of a Haravatat's philosophy regarding rhetoric. I don't 'play' with words, nor do I conflate them past their meaning.

I'd never assume that you had that sort of underlying meaning to your words, because I know you'd rather choke on rice than even mildly suggest it.

[ he can admit defeat. even if he's been given like. every piece of evidence ever that points to him being right. ]

However, in this instance, I don't believe that my assumption was wrong.

[ The floor. His gaze is on the floor with an intensity that suggests he's in a staring contest with it. There's a moment where his eyes flicker back to Alhaitham's, a flash of shock behind carmine irises— an apology?— but then they fall away once more. ]

Which assumption? The one where I'd rather choke on rice than imply an interest in you, or the one where I wouldn't?

[ There's an uncomfortable shrug of his shoulders in time with the words. ]

[ it's silent for a brief moment after that. instead of needling kaveh with more questions and criticisms, alhaitham presses a curled finger to his mouth and takes in the full, awkward measure of his roommate in front of him. why is this even a question? for all that alhaitham comes off as the unreadable observer, it's kaveh's expression that can't be parsed.

he could give him the honest answer, but there may be a better question to ask instead. ]

The former. Why would I say the other option?

[ Kaveh is beginning to regret starting this entire conversation in the first place. Alhaitham asks a fair question, but as usual he finds himself with no answer— at least not one he can comfortably give voice to.

He can't say, after all, that he's never thought about it. But he kind of likes having a place to live.

In the end, he settles for sending a message through whatever system Sumeru is liable to use now that the Akasha is out of service for good: ]

[ alhaitham has been called handsome before, among other things (some of them beginning with 'h' or 's'). he's too privy to the gossip and goings-on at the akademiya not to hear things about himself. he just knows how to filter them out.

but to hear these words from kaveh, of all people—the brilliant star of the akademiya, role model, altruist, bachelor—makes this an even stranger admission. kaveh could have his pick of whoever he wanted. against countless others that kaveh had in the palm of his hand, somehow the person he purported to hate (and want to kill, if this meme means anything) is one of them.

it makes sense for kaveh to hide behind a heart when he says this. it sure is something. against every form of logic, there's somehow a part of alhaitham that isn't surprised. ]

[ Kaveh's ears are hot. He can only hope that the embarrassment hasn't started to creep onto his face, because that would genuinely be something out of a nightmare. Again. He likes having somewhere to live, even if it's with Teyvat's Most Irritating Bachelor.

(He should write a script for that one. Sell it to a performing troupe.) ]

[ Nor is this actually just physical attraction, Kaveh is reasonably sure. But he's already opened up enough to make himself uncomfortable, and he doesn't like the thoughtful gaze he can practically feel on him, despite his eyes remaining locked in their staring match with the floor.

Still, that doesn't prevent a slide of his eyes, a stolen glance upwards in Alhaitham's direction to try and discern something readable from a normally-unreadable face. ]

[ alhaitham is just thinking. he glances up at kaveh, but not quickly enough to catch that brief glance his way.

kaveh is openly admitting to, even insisting upon, finding alhaitham attractive. and to what end? for the sake of honesty? they could have moved the conversation onward, past any talk of kaveh wanting to keep him up at night, but the conversation is quickly shifting elsewhere.

how does alhaitham feel about kaveh now that he knows this? would he be just as honest? ]

No. Nope, there's nothing, other than the fact that sometimes, for one as smart as he is, he can be remarkably dumb. He's so intent on contradicting Alhaitham that he's gone and admitted something he really would rather have kept to himself— not just that but practically forced his roommate to listen despite the numerous outs he's been given.

Where does that leave him now? Damage control, judging by the way Alhaitham remains silent, continues answering him through confused-colored hearts. ]

[ So much for keeping the heat confined to his ears. Kaveh's reasonably sure he can feel a red stain of embarrassment starting to creep onto his cheeks even as he scowls at the second heart Alhaitham sends. (The orange one too, sure, but the green one is infinitely more offensive right now.) ]

[ Not that, to be fair, there is any logical link that prevents Alhaitham from kicking him out despite having offered a place to stay. Even Kaveh can see that. But as always, the Kshahrewar graduate puts the empathy of the situation first.

Also it gives him something else to focus on— dull some of that embarrassment off his face— before he sends the next heart. ]

[ at this point, alhaitham is losing steam. their conversation has been just short of circular. what matters more than correcting kaveh is his confession, letting loose something that he—rather, the both of them tenaciously kept under lock and key.

because alhaitham feels the same way, of course. kaveh has been attractive since their akademiya days, when he would draw everyone under his glow with his talent, charm, and sincerity. alhaitham was hardly the first to think so, and he won't be the last. that, along with their failed collaboration during the akademiya, is why alhaitham upholds the barrier between them.

kissing and flirting. that's all they're admitting to. he can do that, now that the opportunity is there. they've already crossed into the threshold that would make any relationship awkward, so they may as well go the full mile. ]

[ The words slip out before he can help himself, and Kaveh's eyes lift back up to Alhaitham's from where he's sitting, the architect shifting uncomfortably in his seat for a moment. Fuck. That's embarrassing.

He drops his gaze again, his reply coming quickly together as heat washes briefly over his cheeks. ]

[ Jerk. Alhaitham is met with a pair of raised brows and then something that's meant to be a scowl (but honestly is still a little too flustered for that) before Kaveh's gaze actually drops. But even the slide of his gaze won't stop the other from seeing the way his lips part, a soft circle of surprise.
