Captivity

You've just been captured - or maybe you've been held captive for a while now. Whatever the case, you've lost your freedom, and there's a specific person responsible for that. You might be a prisoner, a mental patient, a kidnap victim, or someone's pet. Maybe you're there willingly, or maybe the choice has been taken away from you completely.

Scenarios
1. For their own good. Either the captive isn't aware that what they've been up to has drastic consequences, or they don't care. The captor is doing this to prevent the captive from doing themselves harm.

2. For the good of society. The captive is a not just a threat to themselves, but to others. The captor must do this for the betterment of all.

3. Because they're not well. A possible doctor/patient feel. The captive is unwell, mentally or physically. It could be a quarantine of some sort. Does the captor take pity? Do they know how to care for the ill?

4. For the money. Bounty hunter, or jailer for higher. The captive is wanted for some reason. The other may care, they may not. But it isn't personal...they're just getting paid.

5. For their love. It might be a case of yandere, or it might be a consenting BDSM relationship. Whether it's by mutual agreement or by force, you're keeping them simply because you love them.

6. Because they're cute or unique. A specimen of sorts. Or a pet. The captor is proud of collecting the captive.

7. Because they're your property. Slave? Livestock? Who cares what they think - they're your property, and you decide their fate.

8. For the lulz. A prank, payback? You'll let them go, once you're done laughing and snapping photos... maybe.

9. For science. The captive might be an alien species, a rare supernatural being, or an anomaly that must be studied. They're a lab rat being poked and prodded for the pursuit of knowledge. The captor might be the scientist, or 'just' a lab tech. Do they feel any remorse for what they're doing?

10. Choose a scenario, or combine several.

[That is a good question. Thanatos doesn't usually act on impulse, but today he did, and now he doesn't have a concrete plan. What he planned he pulled through- getting Dorian here.

After he finishes lighting the braziers, he floats over to where Dorian is.]

The water is drinkable. [Then there is a small pause as he stares at the little fountain from which water falls, contemplating on what to do next.]

You will remain here until I figure out what is causing the anomaly.

[ He glances into the water again. ] Well, thank goodness for that.

[ He knows his tone is a bit petulant, but he can’t bring himself to feel grateful at the moment, especially at what Thanatos decides. ]

How long might that take? I could be stuck here for an indeterminate amount of time?

[thanadone]

[Now that he thinks about it, he'll have to provide food for him as well, if he's to remain here in this confinment. He'll arrange something- aside from Hermes, he's the only one allowed to roam the human realm.]

I will not lie- I do not know how long you'll remain here. These kind of things don't happen often, if at all. I need to fix the core of the problem so that other people don't get affected as well.

[Dorian is not the only one that wants to get out of here- Thanatos himself doesn't like the temple.]

Has anything odd happened to you in the past few days?

[ He huffs softly. ] Fantastic. How do anomalies like that happen?

[ Despite his attitude, he is genuinely curious about how something like this could occur. If there is a set time for someone to die, what can change that? ]

Odd? [ He pauses, seriously considering it. ] I don’t think so? My friends and I had been requested to retrieve an enchanted relic for an acquaintance, but that’s not really out of the ordinary.

I intend to find out. Last time something like this happened, my mother intervened. It was on a larger scale, however, and many years ago.

[Also her daughters were involved, the Fates, so that was probably the reason. Since the Fates were born and established, something like this didn't happen. So he will definitively have to discuss it with her.]

A relic? Was it dangerous relic in any way, or was it only a mild enchantment?

[ Dorian frowns, his expression a bit more thoughtful. ] For something like that to happen, it would have to take a powerful source of magic or something, wouldn’t it?

In all honesty, I’m not sure. We were told it was powerful enough that we had to be careful, but not quite what it actually does. Part of the reason we were retrieving it was so our acquaintance could study it.

That it would. It's why I need to talk to my mother.

[Night incarnate and Fates will probably know what is going on. If they don't, well, they are fucked, so to say.]

Hmm. Then I don't think the artifact is the cause. Still, good to know.

[Thanatos looks uncertain for a moment, and summons his scythe then.]

Remain here, I will return shortly. Do not attempt to leave, for your own sake. [Although, he's sure the guy can't lift those stone bars and barricades even if he tried. They are made so that mortals can't lift them.]

[ Dorian can certainly understand how this can be concerning, and for that he does sympathize with the situation. It doesn’t mean he likes the thought of being stuck here, and he huffs again. ]

I suppose I don’t really have a choice.

[thanadone]

[He looks around the cell once again, and gives him a nod- then two big, green spectral wings appear behind him and envelop him and after a burst of green light and smoke, he's gone.

It will be a long few hours (or is it days, it's hard to tell in this place) before Thanatos shows up again, and this time lands on the stone floor. He's holding something wrapped in a long cloth in one hand, the other holding a scythe. No, there's no blood dripping from it. And he actively looks for Dorian.]

[ Dorian startles a bit at the sudden unfurling of wings, but before he can say anything Thanatos disappears.

And it isn’t long before the boredom sets in, having little to do in what is essentially a prison cell. It doesn’t take him long to explore the room, and after that he has little to hold his attention.

By the time Thanatos returns, he’s sitting on the wall of the fountain idly playing his lute, simply because he has nothing else to do, though his fingers still at the figure’s reappearance. ]

[Thanatos visibly relaxes when he sees Dorian still there. He didn't even attempt to leave so that's encouraging. He didn't really give the man a lot to go on, or to trust him, but he still does.]

I brought you some necessities.

[There is a box with food wrapped up (bread, some cheese, and dried meat), but also several blankets and waterskins- the fountain might be clear and water drinkable, but it's better to have something to drink it out of.]

[ Honestly, Dorian isn’t sure if he entirely does trust Thanatos. But his suspicion is mitigated a bit just from the unfamiliarity of his surroundings. He isn’t willing to risk running into more trouble until he learns more about what might be waiting on the other side.

Carefully leaning his lute against the fountain wall, he rises to his feet and approaches slowly. ]

Thank you. [ He hesitates a moment. ] Were you…able to learn anything?

[He trusts him enough to stay put, and he can't ask for anything more than that.

When Dorian approaches him, he offers the things he brought.]

Yes, I have. [Although, how do you explain cosmic instability to a mortal without frying their brain?]

It is a complicated matter that involves a primordial being known as Chaos. My mother is working on fixing the issue. But it might take a while.

[ He carefully takes the box, even as he frowns a little at the answer. It’s vague, for sure, but as long as those that need to understand it know what’s going on, he supposes it’s something. ]

How long is “a while”?

[Good, good, it's good that he's accepting food and such, he'll deal with "I wanna go outside" if it comes to it. His mind is on a completely different track than Dorian's.]

I am uncertain. She will tell me once everything is finished. I'm to oversee the others in case more like you show up.

More anomalies? [ He bites back a sigh, resigned to the fact that this will not be a quick fix.

Looking at the box, he carefully manages to lift the lid and peek inside. The sight and smell of food reminds him that he hasn’t eaten in a while. ]

Yes. If it happened once, it can happen again.

["I eat the food of the underworld" almost escapes him but he shuts his mouth before he says something- not stupid- but unnecessary, and freak the guy out.]

No, I don't require food on the regular. I enjoy it, but it isn't necessary.

[What does he... do? Everything he does is connected to the underworld and his work so there's nothing else he really does. Just work.]

My work is too large to have amusement on the side. [Indulging Zagreus in drinking nectar at the lounge is rare and in between so he doesn't count it.]

[ Sitting on one of the rugs, Dorian frowns at him. ]

Such is my eternal job.

[It is big enough that he has his older brother also helping, and his twin managing the lists. He's grateful that Dorian is not asking what his job IS, but he's expecting to be asked eventually.]

It is what it is- and it must be done. I have time to get moments of respite, but I am never really off the job.
