One small spanner in the works can change nothing and yet everything at the same time.
The world you live in is a lot like the normal one. History progresses more or less as it should. Technology flourishes. Empires build upwards, then crumble and fall. The only difference? Somehow, along the way, society has stratified into three categories:
- Normal: The regular folks. Nothing more, nothing less.
- Fighters, Berserkers, or Servants: The nomenclature depends on who you ask, but the fact reminds that these people have incredible powers, the nature of which varies yet can range from psychic abilities to resilience to super strength. However, the downside is that, without a "master" (we'll get to that later) as a partner, they can feel listless and not even have control of their powers. Their drive, whether they accept it or not, is to find the true master that will calm them and help them sharpen their abilities - and there is only one, true match. No substitutes accepted, and the longer they hold off on finding their master, the looser their grip becomes. In some parts of society, fighters are considered second class citizens, but this isn't a usual situation.
- Masters: Think of these folks as focusing lens. They usually have no special powers, but they can hone the abilities of their "servant" to a T. There are a few benefits, including having someone willing to protect...and sometimes, care...for you at all costs. However, the primary benefit is that unpaired masters are often killed off by rogue fighters or forced into bonds that don't work by half-insane ones.
Once a master/fighter pair is made, there have been reports of psychic connections and fighters being strengthened by the mere presence of their master, which means pairs ofter live together. This is helpful, because despite the fact that you would think pairs would want to peacefully coexist, there's been strife since, well, before anyone can remember. Other pairs will feel a desire to defend their territory and status, and even non-violent pairs will find themselves attacked. There's
One more important thing to note: it's not generally accepted for fighters and masters to be romantically involved. In fact, it's frowned upon. But, given the close living quarters, expectations, bonds, and the fact that no one will be as close or as understanding - ah, it's best to say there's more of a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Yet as a fighter or a master, you won't fall for your partner...
...will you?

PROMPTS
- Discovery: You've just found out your status as fighter or master. How do you respond?
- First Sight: Oh, who is that? Whoever it is, your heart is already racing and your instincts are kicking in.
- Trying It Out: It's a trial period for your fighter/master pairing, and you must get into sync.
- Bond: You've decided that this is the forever relationship you want and are prepared for the ceremony, which is, essentially, a blood oath.
- Not Right: Because of societal pressure or just by being unbonded at the wrong time, you've been forced into a partnership that doesn't work. Aside from being miserable, it could also be dangerous, as the fighter's powers could go haywire.
- Unhealthy: In this relationship, the fighter is viewed by the master as their property. Or, in the inverse, the master is viewed as weak and resented.
- Adoration: Unlike the unhealthy relationship, in this bond, the fighter puts the master above all else and quite nearly worships them.
- Save: You want to take away a fighter or a master because you care for them and their partner isn't treating them well. That's noble...but is it such a good idea?
- Doting: Some fighters or masters feel the urge to take care of their partner's needs, especially when they forget to take care of themselves.
- Fluff: There are actually fun, loving moments between the well-adjusted fighter and master, even in the most volatile of scenarios.
- Calm: It's a rare time of peace where the partners can be almost domestic.
- Heal: Injuries and mental hurts need to be taken care of, simultaneously strengthening the bond.
- Assigned: The pairing of you and your fighter or master was not natural. You were picked strategically for each other.
- Power Up: You have to become stronger. Luckily, you can get power and focus right from the tap.
- Need: You're desperate for your fighter or master, and your body and mind are rebelling against you because of it.
- Training: A fighter and master must work as one, and this ability must be practiced.
- Sense: Your master is in trouble, you can just feel it.
- Return: You two have been kept apart and are finally able to return to each others' presence.
- Pose: Actually, you're the opposite of what you're pretending to be - ie, a fighter is really a master - and so is you're partner. You're just posing for some reason or another.
- Love: You've fallen in love, as it's incredibly hard not to do so, but you must act as if nothing's changed.
- Public: You can't take it anymore. You two want to be acknowledged as a normal couple, and you want the world to know it.
- Most Pure Partnering: What better way to hone a fighter's skill than through the ultimate support: sex? The obligatory smut option.
- Mismatched: You've fallen in love with a fighter when you're a fighter or a master when you're a master.
- Not in Step: You're a terrible pairing. The two of you together makes no sense at all, but you must make it work.
- Childhood: From the very beginning of your life, you have been brought up as the perfect fighter or master.
- Don't Belong: You're normal; the only reason you're involved in all this is because the person you love is a fighter or master.
- Masters' Privilege: Masters can have a love interest in the "normal world"; fighters cannot. Is this a point of contention between you two?
- Dark Underbelly: You're a fighter or a master from the part of the world that sees fighters as second class. Can you learn that there's a different way?
- Jealous: The person you really want isn't your partner.
- Possession: After seeing the wandering eyes of your partner, you feel the need to remind them that it's you and them against the world.
- Comfort: The events of the day didn't go as planned, and one of you needs reassuring.
- Berserk Button: Your master has been threatened. You must destroy anyone who could have harmed them. Can you be brought back from the brink?
- Unexpected: A master protecting a fighter? Unheard of!
- Double Trouble: At least one of you in your pair is sadistic and looks for other fighter and master duos to torment, both physically and sexually, even if they don't want to fighter. The other party is willing or at the very least unable to be noncompliant.
- Attacked: You're a peaceful pair, but you've been sought out and our in danger.
- Need a Boost: Right in the middle of a fight, the fighter's strength is fading. The master must step in and show support or affection.
- To Be Left Alone: Your partner is leaving you. It is your duty to convince them to stay.
- Defeat: The battle didn't go your way. Your partner has been slain in front of your eyes; if you're a master, perhaps it was to get at you. Your humiliation is cinched by your being claimed.
- Betrayal: In a twist of fate, the one you should trust the most has been working against you this entire time.
- WILDCARD

All she needed was that Grail.
The night of summoning she gave her blood. She gave herself. She used the artifact she'd scrimped and saved for. And it worked. The runes glowed. The wind whipped up and swirled around her, clothes rustling. She just hoped that the warrior she summoned would be enough. ]
Name yourself! And kneel before me!
[ Eager. So eager. ]

Throughout his duel with Rider, Lancer -- Dimitri -- had the upper hand, being both stronger and faster. While Dimitri had been unable to break through his opponent's guard, there was no way his opponent could do the same to him, either.
So, in an act of desperation, Rider targeted Dimitri's Master. It was all he could do to leap between Sakura and his opponent, and he was rewarded for his effort by a blow that broke through his abdominal armor and left a stab wound in his gut. Fortunately, as a Servant, it wouldn't kill him, but it would make it more difficult to fight until it fully heals.
After taking the wound, Dimitri had scooped up Sakura and retreated from their foe. He ran through alleys, looking for a place to stop and regroup. In the end, he set Sakura down when he found a spot beneath an overpass. It was at that point that the rush faded and the pain from his wound hit him full force, and he dropped to a sitting position on the ground, back against a wall.]
I'm...I'm terribly sorry, Master. I brought this on myself by failing to properly protect you.
no subject
it was not a role she had chosen, but then, there was much in this life she had not chosen for herself. she was not without a will of her own, but when it came to such situations, she was capable of acting according to whatever dictates were available or necessary.
when Dimitri sets her down beneath the overpass, Sakura adjusts herself to a standing position and looks down, inspecting his wound, the fingers of her other hand curling in on themselves as though clutching something close. ]
Uhm... thank you, Dimitri-san. For protecting me.
[ Sakura feels as though she is the one who should be apologizing. after all, Dimitri's injury is because he intervened to protect her. however, self-effacing though she may be in some respects, she knows enough of the etiquette of the Holy Grail War to know that there would be a certain condescension in such an apology: they after both acting out their roles, after all. ]
Here... let me heal you.
[ her fingers uncurl, and she extends her hand, palm out, inviting him to accept her touch to initiate the transfer of mana. ]
no subject
[Dimitri does appreciate the gesture of gratitude, though. She's very different from the other two residents of their house; while he can tolerate her grandfather some of the time, he finds her brother absolutely insufferable. How a girl like Sakura came out of such an environment is beyond him. As a result, she's the only member of the Matou household that Dimitri likes. It helps that he sees quite a few similarities in her to Marianne, an old classmate of his from when he was still alive.
When Sakura offers her hand, Dimitri gently wraps his own hand around it. He can feel the transfer of mana from her body into his, and the pain in his stomach subsides as he feels the wound close and mend itself.]
Thank you. I feel much better now. What about you -- are you all right?
[Dimitri didn't see Sakura get hurt by anything, but he wants to be sure. He especially wants to make sure she didn't get hurt while he was carrying her.]

;aslkdjfs so either way he's getting dunk'd on lmao my fav. but man.... she sounds like dan (re: moral compass

Hey that totally makes up for her (probably) trying to summon a Saber. Which she will deny if he ever asks...... But least she makes up for her "No civilian casualties/only kill when necessary" rule by having a huge store of mana for him to pull from. It balances out, right?
The gen-to-potential-ship pipeline sounds good to me! 1 and 3 probably work best for that arrangement, I'm fine with either! ]

nobody ever tries to summon an Archer lets be real. and oh yeah totally! deep down he doesn't really want to kill anyway but you didn't hear that from him.
ok! yeah! sounds good to meeeee toooo. i'm currently lost in the chaos that is tfln lmao but i can work up a starter later tonight? or if u have an idea, pls throw something my way. :>]

start with 1 and shift to 3 later, let me know if this works!
It shouldn't have worked. And yet, as the magical haze begins to abate, she's no longer alone, even if she can't quite make out the hero's (Saber, she hopes) form through the fog. She can breathe easy; step one of plan has succeeded without a hitch. Somehow.
Her small form hunched over the chalk array, the blonde quickly pulls herself to her feet. The anticipation is a killer, and as Hibiki straightens, she subtly rolls her shoulders back to try to appear a bit taller than she is. Painting a quietly confident smirk on her lips, even if it's the opposite of how she's feeling right now, she bows her head slightly, out of habit. ]
Good evening.
[ She isn't normally so primp and proper, but first impressions--especially this one--are important. ]
it's great! let's see if i remember how to play this guy haha
ServantFighter looks more like an Assassin than anything else. the hood moves slightly, shifting upwards so he can see who has summoned him this time.small. female. blonde. polite, if her greeting is anything to go by. that confident smirk seems as though it's hiding secrets rather than projecting any sense of self. he would have believed the image if she hadn't bowed her head at him.
well, she doesn't seem like a horrible person. not yet, anyway. he quirks a grin.]
Evening, miss.
[he greets back, that hint of a smile visible beneath the hood.]
Or I guess I should be calling you Master, huh?
[out of the summoning circle he steps, closer towards her. his thumb rests at the edge of his hood and he lifts it slightly to show her a green eye before sweeping into an over the top bow.]
Archer, at your service.
[not a Saber or an Assassin, funnily enough.]
I believe in you!
Maintaining a smile, it pulls thin when he calls her 'Master.' Ah, right, that's to be expected. Even if she dislikes using formalities (and Master is... uncomfortable), she needs to see this as a working relationship.
Her smirk falls when he finally introduces herself, looking up at Archer as her takes a step forward.
Archer... ]
It's nice to meet you. [ Is that really how she should greet him? Oh well, too late. ] Or maybe "heeding my call" would me more accurate.
My name is Hibiki. I guess Master works, but I usually prefer people call me by my given name.
😳😊
right, right. Hibiki, his new Master.]
Oh? Even from a Servant?
[Archer leaves the circle a little more. he seems to be following the lines of it, stepping on the lines she had made on the floor and strolling in a circle.]
So, uh. Hibiki? Where have you summoned me to? What's going on this time? More Wars?
[she doesn't look the type to fight. he had thought similarly about the old man, however, and had been wrong about that.]
no subject
It might have been a mistake, but she's going to try to push that from her mind. Watching Archer walk the perimeter of the summoning circle, the small blonde nods, brows furrowed in thought. ]
We're in Shizuoka, in Japan. It hasn't started yet as far as I know, but there's a war on the horizon.
[ If she sounds unsure about the details, there's a reason for that. Future sight can be extremely vague, and trying to make sense of the notes clearly scribbled in haste has been difficult at best and near impossible at worst. She can't exactly ask the one who wrote them for translation.
She lets out a small sigh before crouching down and reaching for the notebook at her side. Open to a sketch of a magical array, it looks nothing like the one he's currently circling. ]
I can try and fill in the gaps, but I'm still trying to piece things together myself.
no subject
something noble, for sure.
he pauses in his steps to glance downward at her and the sketch she's opened up to. he wants to figure out what he's gotten into... rather, what she's summoned him to get into. he moves to crouch in front of her, dropping himself into a squat. his arms lay over his thighs as he attempts to make sense of the design.
different from the one beneath him.
what a hard-working young lady, though. this Hibiki. his Master. he can add that to what little he knows of her, too.]
What's that? Any idea? Looks pretty different from the summoning circle you made.
[he asks instead of having her fill in the gaps. Archer gestures to the page in her notebook with a finger.]
no subject
He crouches down at the same time as her, looking down at the notebook and pointing at the sketch. Hibiki snatches it up out of habit, holding it protectively to her chest. Ah, of course he would notice. Lips pressed together in a fine line, Hibiki hesitates, weighing her options. Should she lie? Refuse to answer? Redirect the conversation? ]
...
[ With a resigned sigh, she eases her grip on the journal, quietly flipping through the pages before stopping on the array. ]
It's one that my mother drafted, to use when another war broke out.
[ Not if. When. She reluctantly offers it out for him to get a better look. ]
I was planning on using it, but obviously that didn't end up happening. I'm honestly surprised it worked in the first place. [ ... ] I know that doesn't do much to build confidence here, but I'm not usually this slap-dash about things.
no subject
[is how he responds to her snatching up the journal and holding it to her chest. he raises his hands, palms up, in surrender. look, he's not going to do anything. he's even going to wait for her to come to the decision, patiently.
they have to work together, don't they? he'd say as much but apparently, there's no need. after giving her a searching look, he shifts closer and looks down at the symbol her mother made. he furrows his brow and raises a hand to press his mouth to his fist, thoughtful.
she's a bit nervous, isn't she? he smiles, trying to be disarming.]
If it worked, then it worked. How it happened doesn't really matter too much, does it?
[does that mean that the one she used to summon him was one she came up with on her own? damn. that's pretty impressive. and because it's a good idea, he reaches a hand forward to pat her on her blonde head.]
I'm sure you'll be working to prove yourself somehow along the way. I get the feeling you'll do that, anyway. [then he stands, giving her space once more. with a groan, he stretches his body out.]
Right-o. What's the plan? We're not going to hang out here forever, are we?
sorry for the delay on this, tag brain has been weird this week orz
At least he's smiling, even if she gets the impression that it's more for her benefit than anything else. She exhales, tension still held taut in her shoulders but slowly relaxing.
(It's strange, even managing to draft and successfully use her own summoning circle, she has practically no magical presence herself. But that doesn't seem to affect him at all.) ]
Yeah. It kinda feels like beginner's luck, though. But you're here in one piece, right?
[ Stormy blues flick upward as he pats her on the head, shoulders shrugging and head ducking reflexively. Offering an awkward smirk in return, the small blonde tucks the journal under her arm before glancing over her shoulder. ]
Absolutely not. I'm pretty sure nobody noticed me coming here, but they probably know someone's here now. [ "Here" being what appears to be an abandoned warehouse of some sort; empty metal shelves and the vague outlines of equipment scattered about. ]
I'm gonna need to apologize ahead of time, but I'll have to make the trip back home blind. I'll explain when we get there, but let's just say it's safer for both of us that way.
no worries! i've been there
there needs to be a little understanding of their roles. he's the "protector", the one that's going to fight all the battles. she's here to... call the shots, so to speak. he's done the whole going against your Master's wishes thing. never ended well for him.
Robin pats his body as if to make sure he's there in one piece. yep, all here.
he nods absently at her and looks around for their escape route. not the best place for him to fight but there are at least some hideaways they can use if someone does catch them before they have their chance to leave.]
Guess we better take off, then-- [wait, what. blind?] Uh, blind. Sure. Okay. [what...]
Well, er. Did you need to hold my hand, then?
[he offers it. what else is he supposed to do???]
no subject
Well, that's what she gets for being vague. Of course he won't think she meant in that way. Raising her left hand up, a gold band resting on her ring finger, the smaller blonde shakes her head. ]
Not physically, don't worry. [ And please, don't write her off as a lost cause. ] I meant, if a Master or Servant decide to introduce themselves, I won't be able to feel them approach. But good luck finding me--unless they're really close up, they won't notice me, either.
[ Bringing a finger to her lips, she is officially done talking about this here. Secrets can be further revealed when they're back home.
Taking that same finger, she points toward a window near the roof. Someone with a keen eye will easily notice that it's been left slightly open, just enough for a smaller adult to fit through. ]
I can boost us up if I need to. Otherwise, we're looking at waltzing through the front entrance. Not the route I want to take, but we can deal with it. After that, it's about a half mile sprint back to where I'm staying.
no subject
hah! just his luck. another married one! she's not trying to bring her husband back too, is she? sheesh. let the dead rest. hell, he's dead and he'd love his own rest but it just doesn't ever seem to be in the cards for him. there's a war to fight. there's another war to fight. there's an AI that needs his help saving the senpai she loves. there's a world to save with 300 other Servants.
his hand pulls back and drops to his side. he cants his head to the left, listening. invisible, huh? sounds like his Noble Phantasm. maybe this is the real reason she has summoned him. they have similar powers and similar fighting styles. this could actually work. for once.
following her finger, he does notice the window that's been left open and narrows his eyes at it.]
Not a fan of front entrances, myself. Back doors are more my speed. [beneath the shadows, he grins again.] Or windows that have been left open. Don't worry about boosting us up. Servant, remember? I'll need to pick you up, though, little lady. [what happened to Hibiki?? call her Hibiki, Robin!!]
As long as you're okay with it, of course. [he gives a pointed look to that ring on her finger, nodding his chin at it.]
mind if I move the scene a little? let me know if I should pull back
But that's not to say she doesn't have someone she would love to bring back to life, but there's something much more immediately important. That she will be keeping close to her chest.
His gaze constantly honing in on the black tourmaline ring, punctuating his last statement with a pointed look toward that hand has her smiling thinly. What's he getting at? ]
I don't mind? [ ??? ] I kinda figured it was either that or working with a sudden and convenient gust of wind.
[ And guess who's readily available to provide, even despite the limiter--not a wedding ring--clearly displayed on her hand. ]
I'm all yours!
[ And no, she didn't think about how that sounded. Sorry, Robin, this is your Master.
Where she might make a scene if someone scooped her into their arms, Hibiki doesn't resist. The pair will easily fit through the cracked window, and as they begin to move (whether he puts her down or not), she directs them toward a residential part of the city.
So far, nothing gets close enough to register a threat. It seems like this is just an ordinary night. ]
So, what can you safely tell me about yourself? We can wait until we get to the house, but I wanna be prepared in case someone spots us.
go for it! i was going to if you weren't lol dw
sudden and convenient gust of wind is right. it comes out of Robin, born of amusement. though it's a far cry from being enough to whisk them away to safety.
"I'm all yours." not something she needs to be saying when he's assuming, dumbly!! that she is spoken for. the expression on his face goes wry. he does scoop her up before he makes a leap toward the window that no normal human could make.
it's when they're traveling by rooftop, Hibiki still in his arms, that she poses her question. he gives her a quick glance but seems to be more focused on getting to the safety she's directing him to. the wind whips at his mantle and his hair, nearly blowing it back. somehow, it manages to stay on and keep his identity hidden for a bit longer.]
Me? [a soft scoff.] Nothing interesting? I'm just a regular guy that was made to be a Servant by some omnipotent Holy Grail. Sorry, but you didn't summon anybody crazy strong. I'm not terrible with a bow, though. I've got a little pride in that, at least, as an Archer. [a few things changed, just a little, over time. over summons.]
We'll be winning our battles with more brain than brawn. I'll say that much. Well, you don't seem like a brute-force kinda lady, anyway.
no subject
Whether he's decided to hold all his cards close or not, she can't tell. One of the unfortunate side-effects of keeping her own abilities under wraps. But even with the limited amount of information he gives, Robin manages to pull a quiet smirk out of her.
He isn't a Saber, but that might work out better for them in the long run. ]
Not brute force, but that doesn't mean I can't hold my own in a fight. [ Is she going to elaborate here? Not until they've made it back to their base of operation--and speaking of which...
After about ten minutes of bounding through the air, Hibiki directs him to drop down behind a small house toward the outskirts of the city. Surrounded on all sides by hedges, the moment they set foot on the grounds, they are greeted by the faint prickle of familiar magic. A protection spell, although the signature feels different than Hibiki's... but similar to something he may have sensed wrapped around her. If she hadn't directed him here, Robin might have missed it completely.
Much like her, it's as if this place doesn't exist.
As soon as he puts her down, she exhales deeply, the tense energy she had been holding even before summoning him here beginning to melt away. They made it back in one piece--her and the Servant she summoned. The fact that she pulled any of this off is going to hit her like a truck later, but she can think about that later. Unlocking the door, she ushers them both inside.
The interior looks more modern than the exterior, but still holds some of the charm of a traditional home. Dark-finished wood, sliding doors; and the faint, mingle scent of paper and flowers wafting through a somewhat open floor plan. It won't take long for him to see where that's coming from, judging from the amount of books and plants scattered about the house. ]
Here we are. We should be safe here for now. Feel free to make yourself at home. [ A beat. ] And before you say it, I know you're here to fight, but I'd be an awful hostess and Master if I don't at least try to make sure you're comfortable.
