[ 2AM was a perfectly normal time to wake up wasn't it? Joel had slipped into the kitchen to grab a drink while Jill slept in the other room. Things had been going relatively smoothly until he tripped over an imperfection in the floor. Something about the wood suddenly popped and had warped in a way it petruded out just enough to be a problem. They did have some rain recently and between that and the cold weather it might have been a perfect storm for the situation. It could be anything really, but all he knows is that he was now wearing the glass of bourbon he was bringing into the living room with bottle in tow naturally. Thankfully the bottle remained in tact but he made a bit of a ruckus in the meantime. His misstep nearly made him fall flat on his face but he thankfully only stumbled, and unfortunately jerked the glass violently enough that caused a different kind of problem.

By now he's headed into the bathroom trying not to trudge any dampness along the rest of the house. Empty glass and bottle placed on the bathroom counter as he goes to promptly undress; fully nude as he intends to hit the shower. However, he thinks to put the glass away first and maybe not have the bottle hanging around in an odd place. His brain is a little scrambled not being fully awake for one, and two, trying to recover from his little mishap along the way. So for now? It's heading back into the kitchen. With a towel draped around his waist. ]

[ The shock of seeing Joel and Tess ride through the gates of town has finally subsided — a shock compounded by the fact that they had a fucking kid in tow, some teenager he's never seen before — but that doesn't mean it's not strange still to see either of them out of the corner of his eye. He's thrilled they're both here; that's not the issue. If he'd been asked, way back when he ditched the Fireflies and started heading West, if he'd want his brother and his brother's partner along for the ride, he'd of course had said yes. He had just been convinced at the time that there was no way in hell either of them would be willing to come with him, and so he'd said his goodbyes and left without looking back.

It turns out they would be willing to come out West, but only if they thought they were riding in to rescue him from certain death or something. Maybe he should have tried that move earlier.

Jackson tries its best to maintain as much of an illusion of normalcy as possible. There are community events regularly, from movie nights to community theater, and even dances held in the town hall with lights strung through the rafters and old CDs piped through the creaky sound system, punch served in mismatched cups. If he'd been asked, at thirty years old, if he'd consider that some knock-off prom would be the most important social event of the week, he'd have laughed. But he's not thirty any more, and living in Jackson is a lot different than living in Austin, and yeah. The dances are kind of fun.

The music they're playing tonight feels like it was plucked from the shiny silver boombox his mom kept in the kitchen; he's heard Marc Anthony, Rey Ruiz, and La India already. This kind of music — what he calls angry housewife salsa — transports Tommy right back to his childhood, and he can't help but look across the crowd to try and spot Joel's disheveled hair to see if he also feels the same impulse in his blood to move, one honed by years and years of pretending to hate it when their mom made them dance with her while dinner simmered on the stove.

He doesn't spot Joel in the crowd, which isn't too much of a surprise, but what does surprise him is that he sees Tess, and she seems to be alone. Obviously Tess can handle herself, has handled herself in worse conditions, but it's been rare to see her not flanked by his cantankerous older brother and the teenage shadow she's developed. He doesn't even think about it before he starts cutting through the people milling around the edges of what's become the dance floor, heading in her direction. ]
