It was his parents' 25th wedding anniversary, which meant that Steve had to be there for the party as the dutiful son, even though with everything that had happened the past year he'd really rather just skip the whole thing. But he knew the kind of hell that would raise, the same way he knew he wasn't going to make it through the party on his own, and normally he'd ask Nancy -it was the kind of thing she'd weathered before- but she was touring colleges and he was actually happy for her even though it meant his options were severely limited.

It had been a whim to ask Eddie, they were definitely friends now, after everything, but he wasn't sure if they were 'please save me from my parents' insane anniversary party' friends yet. It had taken less negotiating than he'd thought it would, mostly because he'd already been curious about D&D anyway but hadn't wanted to intrude -and more than that wasn't entirely sure he'd be able to handle the ribbing with any kind of grace- but if participating in whatever a one-shot was meant that he'd have company and some kind of escape hatch for his own sanity at the party, he'd take it.

Steve had even made sure that Eddie had an actual invitation just in case anyone tried to get over-zealous and turn him away at the door, since of course they were having it at the Masonic Lodge downtown, it was the only place big enough for both sides of the family plus whoever his father had invited from work.
