It's one thing to be in a relationship with someone; it's another beast entirely to be on the exact same page, the same wavelength as them, almost like you're the same person - two halves to a whole. As far as the two of you go, you're both. Maybe being in a romantic relationship may be anathema, but you don't care. This is just another way for you to be completely in sync.

Force & Calm: Every yin needs a yang. Power is nice, but you can't just turn yours off, you have to have someone - a very specific someone - defuse you.
Healer & Fighter: Violence has the nasty habit of often causing injury. It's beneficial to have your own personal medic around.
Brain & Brawn: Point them in the right direction and they'll destroy everything in your path.
Powers Intertwined: Your ability requires the ability of the other person to work correctly.
Weapon: If someone has to use you, it might as well be them.
Shared Trauma: No one understands what you've been through except them, because your past is the same.
Telepathically Connected: You're of the same mind, quite literally.
Team Mates: Some people just work better together, and out of your big team, you two work seamlessly as a subunit.
Part of Each Other: There's a part of them that lives in you, whatever that may be. It's hard to stay away when that lost piece is constantly calling out.
Tragedy: When your other half is in danger of being taken away, what will you do?

Meeting his soulmate in a dingy tavern hadn't been part of Steve's plan for leaving the kingdom quickly and quietly. He knows that it's mostly his own fault, that he should have stuck to the forests and smaller roads, but the promise of freshly baked bread and a bed to sleep on instead of leaves had been too tempting. It's hard to keep a low enough profile on his own when so many of his belongings are a little too clean, a little too shiny, a little too royal blue. He does his best to hide it beneath his cloak or in his bag, but there was only so much he could do to hide his armor beneath rags and there was no way in hell he was going to abandon it. Fighting is what he's best at, the only marketable skill he possesses, and he's not about to turn muscle-for-hire without something to keep him from getting stabbed.
Steve also hadn't accounted for his soulmate being so... Eddie, who sings loudly and talks recklessly and lives a generally flamboyant life. He had dreamed of his soulmate, of course, because it's said that anyone with a soulmate yearns for them so deeply while unconscious that the mind could reach out for that special connection only shared by those destined for one another. It had always been vague impressions of soft curls and smiling lips and a voice that spoke like a song, of warmth not unlike the soft fire that had manifested in Steve's palm one day and terrified him until he discovered it didn't burn. Not until he'd seen Eddie had there been any concrete vision of his soulmate in Steve's mind, yet he'd known it instantly. Holy shit, he'd thought to himself without realizing it would echo in the bard's mind and earn an echo of the same sentiment bouncing back to him from Eddie.
Now it's been a few days, and Steve's armor along with most of his other belongings are hidden under the floorboards of his room at the tavern. He hadn't been able to move on as planned because his soulmate was there, working in his uncle's tavern, singing to entertain the crowds and flirt for coin. Steve's watching him from a corner, nursing a pint of ale, and trying to come up with a new plan. Already he knows that he won't be able to leave without Eddie, aware of the rumors that distance makes soulmates weaker and more prone to feeling each other's pain. Steve had heard the tales of soulmates pulled apart by circumstances only to waste away without the comfort and companionship of one another, alone in their heads again for the first time since meeting.
It's cruel to make anyone so reliant on another soul, yet the romantic in Steve hopes that they can figure things out and work in harmony.
