angel doesn't say thank-you which is probably less alarming than if they did, but they do tug the jacket closer to them. their difference in size makes it spacious and cozy enough to overlap when angel pulls it in, and they like that it smells like aki even though it also smells of smoke. also, arguably, an aki smell. as angel burrows down into it more or less, they listen to aki about the sleeping arrangements and shrug before yawning wide the way a cat would more than a person.
when they blink again their eyes are a little watery from said yawn. ]
We're not sleeping on the seats?
[ whether the case of angel not listening closely enough or angel not understanding, it would be impossible to tell. angel just remembers aki saying something abotu how the seats flatten... not that angel was able to get theirs to. they tilt their head, rubbing at one of their eyes with a curled hand, the other still occupied with holding aki's jacket shut as another stronger gust of wind sends their hair tumbling wildly, both behind them but also with a section too in front of their face. ]

There's a small smile that tugs across Aki's face, watching Angel tug the jacket closer around them. Denji would call it an indirect hug and Aki is surprisingly both okay and amused by that thought. It was cold out and he didn't want to stay outside for too much longer but there was something peaceful about being out here in the dark, just the dull glow of Angel's halo and the car headlights. It made the stars look brighter, with the hum of street lights and homes.
Watching Angel yawn causes a yawn of his own, albeit a smaller, polite one. Finishing off his cigarette, holding that last breath of smoke before exhaling and stubbing it out. ]
We are. I just mean, pick which one you're more comfortable in. I can work around you.
[ Aki took a moment to watch Angel as they sat there, their hair blowing around, the way the smaller, softer feathers of their wings that poked out from under the jacket, caught the breeze and fluffed up. They looked as though they felt nice like it would be oh so easy to just close his eyes and rest his face against them. ]
I have a spare hoody. You can wear it to sleep in. I'll hang our suites up so they don't get all creased.
[ Pulling the door open and heading in, he looked back at Angel with a tip of his head. ]
You coming? Or did you wanna stay out here a while longer?
no subject
It doesn't make a difference to me. Which one do you want?
[ the offer of the hoody makes him stare more owlishly. ]
Okay.
[ not a human, not prone to human niceties and usually not offered them either, angel can't quite make heads or tails of aki. they don't know if they appreciate it, and they don't know if they, well, don't. more than anything, it just feels strange. but beneath that, if angel lets themself sit with that sentiment a little longer, there's something almost...warm. it is just aki being kind though, despite himself, angel is fairly sure they don't warrant more unique treatment, and maybe compared to the volume of power and the chaos of denji, they're not a bad break.
it's just weird because angel is so used to being feared, at best avoided. they think about the food, the soda, and now the clothing.
ah.
their wings flutter, an unconscious tic, not nervous but something like how people will fidget with their clothing when preoccupied.
with another yawn, angel decides it isn't a bad idea to turn in, nodding in response and moving to follow, but the brace of their hand on the car isn't very firm. slipping off the hood of the car almost looks like an accident but angel catches themself, wings keeping them from actually over balancing and tripping. ]
no subject
The back should push down into the trunk. Gives a bit more room for your wings if you need to stretch them. Otherwise, I'll take the back. Anyway, just test both out when you come in.
[ Maybe Aki is just kind? When he's not in full work mode or super serious kill every Devil in sight mode, maybe this is just who he is? Or, perhaps he is giving Angel unique treatment? If he is, he'd never admit to it. Not to Angel, nor to himself.
The small tic and movement are noticed but he doesn't comment on it, too busy feeling inside the car for the coathanger he tossed in earlier- That's when he jumps a little, startled as Angel looked as though they were gonna slip off the hood. ]
Hey! Careful.
[ Voice concerned then surprisingly caring. Aki extended a hand that lightly caught Angel's wrist helping to steady them before offering his other hand. ]
Here. I gotcha.
no subject
wings folded behind them, angel steadies themself on the curve of the hood rather than aki, still careful, head tilted up at him. their halo floods the tiny space between them and they hum tonelessly, a thought caught in their throat that they won't share.
instead, angel says, ]
I think I'll stay out here for a while, actually.
[ but they don't go back to their perch, staying in aki's hold, as if waiting to see what he'll do --- let go, they're sure. ]
no subject
It's easy to notice that Angel tried not to use Aki for support as they found their feet, Aki wasn't offended, he has happy they seemed to have it under control if anything. Still, that didn't stop him from making sure.
So there they stood. Aki looked down at Angel, the glow from their halo illuminating the small space between them. It made everything else around them fall into blackness, Aki's eyes adjusting, focusing in on that little face staring back up at him. Still with his hand around Angel's wrist. Not tight, just there. Nothing but silence was shared as they just seemed to look at each other, Aki slightly mesmerized by the strange otherworldly beauty he saw before him. Maybe it was the lighting? But Angel actually looked angelic.
It wasn't until Angel spoke that Aki snapped out of it. His face had leaned in closer in the short time that he'd been staring at his partner. Blinking, furrowing his brow and drawing back as he reluctantly let go of their wrist. ]
Right. Sure. Okay. Sorry.
[ Feeling the back of his neck as he shook his head a little and turned away from Angel, pausing for a moment, turning to look back before he changed his mind with an uttered: ]
Nevermind.
[ Moving to head into the car, kneeling on the driver's seat and pulling the lever under the bottom of it as he lightly pushed the seat to fall back before shifting over to the passenger side and doing the same. He took a little while doing this, coming out and stepping past Angel as he went into the back to lower those seats into the trunk too. Keeping himself busy as he struggled with something that was on his mind. ]

but that doesn't make sense.
kindness isn't its own excuse.
aki is still a devil hunter and though his actions have disproven to angel specifically his reputation of number one devil hater, it's not like angel is a creature tended towards trust. they lift their small hand above and splay their fingers, staring at the dark between the pale tapered shapes, the light of their halo flooding more of the car than angel themself.
at some point, they must lower their hand, because in fact they end up dozing, unconsciously curling on their side, one of their wings curved over them not protectively so much as automatic, adjusting to angel's slight sleep movements. their lips are slightly parted, one hand curled near their face, the other tucked under them uncomfortably, forgotten. their hair spills across their face too, pooling out in catches of red and something pinker due to their halo, soft light gently refracting. ]

He'd changed into a pair of sweatpants he keeps in a backpack and his shirt was hanging by the window on the hangers he'd fetched out the back too. Laying on his back in the front seat, arms folded behind his head as he stared up at the roof of the car. The dull glow of Angel's halo caught his attention through the windscreen now and then.
How long had it been now? Aki had almost fallen asleep. Rolling over and noticing Angel still wasn't in the car, Aki sighed and slipped back out of the driver's side. Seeing the Devil all curled up and asleep on the hood, he actually smile for a moment before reaching over and sliding an arm under them.
Angle was light to pick up and Aki was careful not to let his arms or hands touch their face or neck as he scooped them up in his arms. ]
C'mon... You can't sleep out here all night. Sorry.
[ Ducking, careful as it brought their faces closer together, Aki leans into the car and shuffles to the back seat. Kneeling in the space between the seats as he gently sets Angel down, mindful of all that unruly hair when he lets their head go, not wanting to trap any of it. Once Angel is in the back seat, however, Aki cautiously brushed their hair from their face. ]
Here...
[ Layinghis spare hoody over their little body to go with his own jacket that Angel was already wearing. He couldn't touch them to see if they were cold like he would a person, but he guessed they would be. ]

they can sense aki is warmer but they aren't so sleepy as to forget themselves or their power. they don't reach out, but the fact that angel wants to even for a moment, is shocking. it wakes them up more than anything else, rubbing more at their own eyes as they peer over at aki in the halo-lit dark. ]
You're weird.
[ apropos of nothing. but that's angel. they think of past partners. one who left them out in the rain, because a devil wasn't a human, didn't get sick, and most importantly didn't matter. another left them at multiple job sites once the devils were killed, as if it took no effort for angel to fly themself back. aki feeds them. takes them in because it's cold. shares his clothing. it is weird.
but it's not bad, though angel tells themself not to get used to it. ]
no subject
Watching the way they snuggle up into his hoody, he was tempted to tell them just to put it on, that way they might not look as adorable as they do now. Then again, it made Aki feel good, knowing he brought them some comfort, even if it was just via an article of clothing he spared. ]
... No I'm not. Stop calling me that.
[ Aki's voice was hushed like he didn't mean to actually say that out loud. A slight frown followed the words as if he was put out by being called weird of all things. He should be used to it by now, it's not the first time Angel had called him or other humans weird, so why did it seem to bother him now of all times?
Maybe Aki was being too familiar with them? Though, that tends to happen when you're partnered with someone, devil or not. And that's a point, it's easy to forget that Angel is a devil, they look almost human, innocent and they don't have the same lust for human blood as others do. Or if they do, it's all talk.
Aki wants to like them, he does like them, in his own weird way. It's just hard. Having to hold back all the time. ]
Settling into the laid-back front seat, his head in a position that's near but not close to Angel's as he pulls a small blanket over himself. The car wasn't cold but it wasn't the warmest either, though it shouldn't take too long to warm up now they were both settled in. ]
You looked peaceful.
[ Aki utters out into the dark, silence of the night. ]
I didn't know if you even slept or not. You always look so tired.
no subject
listening to aki settle down for the night is calm, strangely relaxing. maybe because it's thoughtless on angel's part, who just makes themself more at home in aki's clothing. they've shut their eyes again, spacing out pleasantly, when aki speaks again. there's a mild hum, angel thinking about not answering that either, before the warmth of aki's hoody and the feeling of 'well why not' both win out just enough. angel curls their fingers in the fabric and sighs. ]
I sleep...but not very much.
[ not enough --- the nightmares take care of that. the use of weapons also takes its toll though angel's never explained it to anyone and still doesn't intend to. with aki in the car as well, the temperature is moderate, arguably better than angel's cell, but angel shivers again. they find themselves surprised at it, given their usual living conditions back at the bureau. ready to just ignore it until they fall asleep again --- for however long ---, angel just curls up a little smaller. ]

How come?
[ Aki knows that he shouldn't be poking his nose into Angel's business like this, but he was genuinely curious. Power slept, Denji did too, he was certain some of the other fiends slept as well but he'd never considered if it was different for Devil's to sleep. Considering how lazy and tired Angel always seemed to be, Aki wrongly assumed that they got a ton load of sleep.
Rolling onto his side now, so that he could better watch Angel as he spoke at them. That pang of guilt welled up in him again as he watched them snuggle further into his hoody. They were small, tiny really, they could easily share the blanket Aki had draped over himself. In fact, they would probably hardly take any of it up. Space too. There would be more than enough on the back seat for both of them. Warmer, cozier... So, with that thought in mind, Aki shuffled from the laid-down front seat and with a nudge, went to push Angel further towards the back of the backseat, bringing the warm, heavy blanket along with him too, tossing a large end of it over Angel's small form where they lay. ]
Budge up. And no complaining okay?
[ He was careful, especially careful in fact- what with the hoody covering Angel's limbs he didn't have to worry too much about brushing their hands or anything with his own. ]
no subject
[ it's predictable enough that angel doesn't elaborate, and some of it can be explained by how they startle when aki moves towards the backseat. words of protest die quickly with the addition of part of the blanket. instead, angel ends up sighing in a sound of half contentment half relief. it's even a little warmer than the blanket normally would be because of having been on aki even briefly. angel doesn't tug more of it because they don't need more, but they do resume their slight burrowing technique. the sleepy expression they wear when settled, peering over at aki in the not-dark of their halo, is more open, not wide-eyed in the typical way of staring unnervingly at anyone who addresses them, just soft-set and too sleepy to lie.
dreams, they think in their head. it doesn't bode well that they're thinking of it, because often when they do before falling asleep they have them again, but it's too late to cut the line of thought off. angel feels more resigned to it than anything else. with how they've curled down in the hoody and blanket, they're mostly covered except for their eyes and up, though some of their hair slips over the edge, the messy layers of it threatening to tangle. ]

[ It might be different, most likely is different for Angel, but Aki is haunted by his own dreams, so he at least understands a little. Looking down at them, all snuggled up under hoody and blanket, looking far too innocent to be something capable of draining someone's life. It's easy to forget, but Aki reminds himself before sighing and closing his eyes. The dull glow of that halo makes it hard to enjoy total darkness.
Slinking an arm over the top of the blanket, Aki let it rest across Angel's middle, giving a slight tug as he shuffled down himself, getting more comfortable. Stretching out a leg before curling it up against Angel's, ever mindful not to push them off the seat. Tipping his chin down, Aki lightly pressed his nose into all that unruly hair, before drawing back with a frown and ever so carefully brushing it back with a hand. The motion was more relaxing to himself than he thought it might be. Yawning as he essentially pet the Devil beside him, much like how he'd pet Meowy. ]
...Sorry.
[ He muttered, stilling his hand and returning it to drape over them on top of the blanket. Sighing deeply, the breath pushed a few strands of Angel's hair to flutter about before settling. He was tired for sure, unsettled, even though he was more than comfortable where he lay. ]

angel falls asleep like that, not saying anything to aki's apology in part because they don't know why he gives one in the first place.
the night doesn't grace angel with dreamlessness. voices of the dead ask them why they killed them, what makes them deserving to go on, why do they even want to? and angel harbors the answer they have as long as they can remember: i don't want to, but i have to. if they try to trace back to why, somehow angel can never totally follow the thread in their mind, though sometimes they end up thinking of makima. they chalk it up to her being their boss, but subconsciously it bothers them. tonight's dream is not a new one. hands reach out to touch angel everywhere and they can feel themself siphoning the life from their owners, forced to kill.
they don't want to though.
outside of the dream, angel can't seem to wake themself up, and lucky for aki they don't thrash this time, but their body jerks a little and it's easy to tell if they weren't sort of lying on their wings, those would be anxiously, reflexively moving too. ]

It wasn't his place to know, wasn't his place to care... But he did. He wanted to know the Devil that slumbered very much like the Angel they were in his arms right now. Couldn't help growing to care for them. He did all his partners. The fiend and hybrid that shared his home. Despite himself and how much he wanted to just hate every Devil- He cared.
Sleep came a little later for Aki, maybe because he was ever mindful not to brush a part of Angel that could harm him, or maybe because he wanted to make sure Angel was asleep before he let himself ease into dream himself? But eventually, he slipped away. Hugging into the small body beside him, warming it with his own.
Aki dreamt of his brother, of playing with snowballs and laughing with them. He dreamt of Himeno too. Of listening to her joke and teasing him as she stole a cigarette from him. And as he dreamed these images, he only hugged Angel tighter. It was the slight little jerks and twitching that pulled him from his sleep, and had him drawing his face back to look down at Angel. Lightly Aki cooed a soft sound, stroking that unruly red hair and pulling them closer, humming a soothing tone as his own eyes closed once more, trying to settle them for the rest of the night.
Hours pass like this. Where Angel shuffled and Aki soothed them. It wasn't until the first sound of birdsong started to chirp, through the darkness of the early hours of the morning that Aki managed to fully fall asleep himself. The air in the car was cooler after so many sunless hours and Aki's arm that was out was noticeably colder. A slight shiver trembled through him, a sigh of discomfort from his lips. ]

something about how angel moves is more reminiscent of an animal than a person despite their looks. their wings flex as their arms stretch above, not daunted by the car roof because they are so short it does not really matter. a big yawn makes their eyes water, and when they blink again rapidly it looks like they are crying even though that's not so. their dreams yet ghost behind their vision, and they shiver, trying to remember what their job is today and failing completely. ]

Watching the Devil as they stirred. The way they stretched out and how those fluffy large wings expanded too. A soft, warm smile tugged at his lips, something that possibly looked out of place on the male's face these days, but it was there, as he simply lay there and admired the way Angel's eyes glittered with tears from such a big yawn.
He was surprisingly comfortable and for the most part, warm enough to stay put, but he was longer of body than Angel and so he kinda did need to stretch out himself. At least his legs. So, with a grunt, Aki extended both arms and legs, cramped in comparison to the Devil, his fists hitting the roof lightly, feet pressing against the door. ]
Mmmmhnng~! Good morning.
[ The sound was stained, Aki's brilliant bright blue eyes closed as he enjoyed the way his back and neck cracked. Rubbing his eyes and then brushing his hair from his face, Aki lay there a moment longer. part of him didn't want to get up and get going. He, unlike his partner, remembered what their mission was today and was a little reluctant to go off into a fight so early. ]
Still dark out.
[ The comment was passed as he wiped some condensation from the car window, peering out to see the sun only just starting to crest the horizon. ]
Did you manage to sleep at all? You fidgeted a bit.
no subject
[ the reply is mumbled, also muffled as they half press their face down against their own arm, head turned to bury as if also refusing the day's start. angel somehow manages to be dramatic and understated all at once, a sort of feat really except that they seem to excel at it, at any given moment. with their face still pressed into the cloth of their own sleeve, they add, thick with sleep's vestiges, ]
Same as always.
[ with how muffled their words are, it might be impossible to totally understand what they say, though their wings curl down over them as if in further protest of work and starting out. with the sun barely risen, they actually do have time, but angel's sleepy eyes threaten to close and actually fall asleep for real again if they don't get up soon.
shivering again, their wings press down a bit harder while also fluffing. how their wings can be soft and also bullet proof is anyone's guess, but a devil doesn't exist within ordinary science's standards to begin with. with a sigh, they blink again, wondering if they'll actually have to fight today or if guarding aki's person will be enough. ]

[ Aki commented on the answer he was given, feeling around for his jacket pockets where he'd hung it up by the window in the front seat. Searching for his packet of cigarettes and lighter before plucking up the hoody he'd loaned Angel to snuggle under during the night. Slipping it on with a shiver and shake of his head, snuggling down into the neck of it before letting his head lull back against the headrest. Aki was usually a morning person, but this morning he didn't want to get going. Maybe Angel's lack of enthusiasm had finally rubbed off on him? ]
Well, I had some weird fucking dreams...I know I slept but I don't feel like I did.
[ Spoken with his eyes closed before tipping his head aside to glance at Angel. Wrinkling up his nose as he tries to hear whatever it was that was just mumbled at him. Deciding that if he didn't move now he was never going to move at all and so, with a sigh and clear lack of motivation, Aki unlocked and opened the car door to slink out into the cold morning air. The smell of dew and remnants of the night still hung as he leaned against the side of the car, sparking up a cigarette to start his day off.
As he inhaled his smoke, Aki thought to himself about the day ahead of them. About how he was going to have to fight a devil, about how he was going to have to try and protect Angel too, knowing full well that they wouldn't want to fight. His thoughts drifted to his katana and to the Nail sword, as he wondered if he'd be able to get away without using the curse this time. Because really? He can't exactly afford to anymore. ]
no subject
not an option of course.
too lazy to stand, angel makes the minimal effort to lift themself up with a backward jerk of their wings to let them perch atop the roof of the car, light as a single feather and a few hands breadths apart from aki. unconsciously, consciously, they keep enough distance. aki only has so much time left and doesn't need it further cut short -- again.
...which is a weird thought for angel.
it happens more lately.
they can't think what the word for it is, or why it doesn't feel completely unfamiliar.
sometimes, angel wakes up in the middle of the night with the taste of seasalt on their tongue and tears in their eyes.
and sometimes, when angel watches aki, they think it's a bit of a shame.
as far as humans go, he's alright.
subconscious knows this to be understatement.
yawning so wide their jaw makes a cracking noise, angel sighs. ]
Hopefully this doesn't take too long.
[ still riddled with sleepiness, words rounded and soft, even angel's visage is something on the verge of falling back asleep. but really what they mean is they hope it's easy, as far as these things go. in the faint haze of early morning, mist and dew, angel's halo is a small white sun. it makes them look less real than normal, not necessarily angelic or devilish. just something outside the realm of true. ]
