Of all the places in this world, there's nowhere worse you could be than where you are now. You're in hell - metaphorically or literally - and laying down and just dying seems more and more like the valid action to take. But you can't go any lower and death could be a no escape. There's only one thing keeping you from being a jaded, broken husk: you've fallen in love with someone who shares this fate. It's a love so different than the norm, that only those who've known this desolation can fathom. Perhaps they give you hope, they're an innocent worth keeping safe, they showed you unexpected kindness, or they're simply something to cling to. No matter what, you'll protect them and you wouldn't dream of leaving this place without them. They will leave, though...

...even if you don't.

[Captured or executing a rescue?]

He's only been here a handful of days, but the Master is already very much ready to leave. His brief time with the Doctor has, per usual, brought him the worst luck. And so, managing to escape the Mondasian colony ship with his life just barely intact, he found his TARDIS almost immediately captured by, of all the inanities of the universe, space pirates.

But it didn't end there, oh no. Space pirates would have been too easy. He'd have been their captain in a matter of hours if he'd only had the chance. Instead, too weak to even protest, he was transferred to what he's gradually been able to infer is some sort of collector.

A collector, it seems, who likes to tinker.

The irony would be too funny if it weren't compounded by agony. His captor seems especially interested, of course, in Time Lords and their ability to regenerate. Once again he's caught in a sort of living death, unable to heal or to die. This time with no discernable end. That he refuses to submit, that he continues to taunt those who come to torture him, scarcely matters; the unbearable in-between of his situation threatens to break him just as surely as the drums. He was cured, damn them, he was finally free of Rassilon's sanctimonious punishments. It's simply not fair.

The Master's still recovering from their latest round of tests, which seem to mostly involve a mere siphoning off off his excess energy as it accumulates, when someone new is brought in.

Someone new, but also someone old. And familiar, in mind if not in body. The Master perks up despite himself, remaining outwardly still but watching through lidded eyes as his new neighbor is carried limply into the adjacent cell and dumped on the floor. And then he waits for his fellow Time Lord, the only other one in the universe, to awaken. All the while trying to ignore that desperate spark of hope that's flared in him.
