[ that bitch himself, or at least a declawed fictionalization of him. for those canon unfamiliar, kim's an eton-educated member of the old guard that populated MI6 largely through nepotism and word of mouth, from a very affluent and well-known family. he's also been a true believer in communism and has been a soviet mole since he was recruited in college.

down to play him at any point in his career, either his wwii exploits or the general subterfuge when he was appointed head of soviet counterintelligence. also fine with modern aus! voicetesting because it's been a good long while since i last played this guy. ]

[In general, Jack is not one for the espionage branch of the military. His father didn't become king by being a spy, and he rather rejected the notion on the same vein. But information is currency, if there's anything that his uncle taught him, and this division is particularly good at information.

Usually Jack meets with Q's superior; this is the first time that they're meeting for business. They've met before, in other situations, quickly, but never spent more than a few minutes together.

Jack's let into the quartermaster's office a few minutes early, which means when Q comes back from wherever he was, Jack is there in his chair, less in a show of power and more in a -

-well.

[Q only has one superior, in technical terms, and he reports directly to her. But royalty is royalty and by any measure it rather usurps the head of the division dedicated to preserving it. For crown and country, as it goes.

He's fairly unperturbed, then, to find the young prince using his office as a throne room. Partly because he knows he's been in the building recent and, more precisely, because he watched him break into the office a few minutes ago, via the security camera secreted in the spine of a copy of War And Peace on the shelf.

( gwen doesn't know much about q's work. he does something extremely clever with computers that sometimes necessitates longer hours and more unavailability than she thinks entirely reasonable, but is probably more important than your average pretend email job. sometimes he answers her when he's at work and sometimes he doesn't and that's become ordinary. besides, it'd be unreasonable to expect him to always drop everything to pay attention to her when she has a sudden thought and inclination to share it with him— she is, herself, occasionally and even more inexplicably unavailable.

that's just gwen, is the refrain of everyone who knows her. there are easy explanations readily to hand for most of her absences; her father's insistence that his tours will fall apart if she isn't there to keep them running smoothly. the way that sometimes she can't get out of bed until two in the afternoon, staring into nothing, summoning the wherewithal to walk her dog. ordinary things. q doesn't know anything about her job because she doesn't have one, and most things about her work can be googled: her literary agent and publishing deal, the licensing deal that allowed her ex-boyfriend to use some of her poetry in one of his installation exhibitions, the various events she attends or spearheads to support the work of friends and family who actually call what they're doing careers.

she is supposed to be in germany, presently, visiting her maternal grandfather. (marquering, 70s, retired; speaks very little english and lives a quiet, private life.) there is no reason for her to be anywhere else,

least of all appearing on the internal security cameras — they're so clever with computers, these days; why plant a camera when everyone's surveilling themselves? — of a couple under surveillance related at this point more to their connections than their actions, with no visible means of entry onto the property from its exterior. or why, as she's accepting a robe to cover her swimsuit, a smile and a word (her head tilts to a very particular angle, when she wants something) has mrs sutcliffe laughing, and obliging her by cutting the camera feeds. )

[Gwen doesn't know much about Q's work, and that's the reason they've made it this far. When his work intrudes it's inevitably a disaster, turning perfectly nice people into liabilities or, in the case of one charming almost-boyfriend, turning out that they've been liabilities all along - a world of security alerts triggering when Q had simply popped out for cat food was the first clue that Benji was a Russian operative. No, far better that his partners know nothing about him, truth is a terrible inconvenience.

Thus the sigh that somehow manages to be his first reaction when he catches sight of her on the bank of screens he's monitoring. A sigh and a murmured fuck it all, which nobody questions once the screen wall goes dark.

There's disorder in the control room - a dozen techs being ordered to just fix it by people who have no idea what that entails. Q pushes back from his desk and reaches for his cold cup of earl grey, leaning in to M as he walks past and telling her:]

This isn't a malfunction, they've been switched off from within. I'd suggest we might employ a microdrone instead.

[And then, when he continues on his way off the operations floor to questions of where he's going:]

I need to make a phone call.

[he's dialing her number almost before he hits the debugged soundproofing of his office. Perhaps she won't pick up, but if she does he's ready with a soft greeting.]

Guten tag, liebling. How's SW1 this evening?

[By all accounts, the CIA is supposed to at least extend professional courtesy to MI6 whenever one of theirs sets foot on UK soil. Adler’s team have never been sticklers for the rules of conduct.]

[That’s probably why one of MI6’s safe houses pings an alert late one foggy night. It’s a seldom-used one on the outskirts of London proper, rarely used save for emergencies. The motion alarm tripped is one on the inner stairwell. The few working cameras catch sight of a woman in a leather jacket kneeing by the door with a lock pick set in hand. She turns to glance up at the camera just as the door gives way.]

[Adi Blanchard, callsign Bell. Welsh by birth, dropped off the radar for several years before resurfacing as an asset in the employ of the CIA.]

[Five minutes later, the phone starts ringing at Q-Branch.]

[ william's a deep-cover soviet agent from the 80s in the KGB's 'directorate S illegals program' who has been perfectly assimilated in the US for the past 25 years working as an infectious disease researcher at a private biological weapons facility that's contracted with the US military. he has a very dry, sarcastic, dour personality that can make him difficult to work with, and his increasing doubt in the competence of his handlers and masters—as well as their ability to safely handle the pathogens they're asking him to retrieve—have manifested in deep burnout. he's very isolated and generally desperate for another person from his own line of work to talk to. ]
