① fuck the police, this is the best time for a walk. hope you've got a nice thick coat on.

② stranded in the buttcrack of nowheresville? weren't you watching the time? now you've gone and missed that last bus out of there. or maybe you're lost, somehow. what do?

③ literally chilling, in this weather, is quite easy to do. sitting around relaxing in it is a wee more difficult, but sometimes much more enjoyable, especially if shelter can be found. the snow is beautiful to watch, after all.

④ the weather's not going to stop you. your snow fort's packed full of ammo and ready to go. those aren't snow angels over there; they mark where the poor souls you've downed have fallen. be careful with that snowman's head!!

⑤ you're about fifty miles from civilization but there's a roof over your head, so never mind the chilly draught, right? right. you mightn't be the only one lucky enough to stumble upon this little shelter, though. remember to share the blanket.

⑥ everyone stuck outside should be jelly. you've got a fireplace and hot cocoa and damn if it isn't awesome. a heater's not quite so romantic, but it'd do. there'd better be a backup generator in case the power trips.

[ Most of the time Nancy prides herself on her ability to not leave things alone, most of the time it's for a good reason, because she's on the verge of connecting the dots, or because someone she cares about needs protection. Sometimes, like today, it's because she got ahead of herself, and, as the expression goes, let her mouth write checks that her ass can't (and should not) cash. It's not that she doesn't understand why Steve doesn't want to be at that party, and it isn't that she's so callous she won't give him an out after coming up with one, but hot chocolate? Lights?

One of the mixed blessings that comes from living in a place like Hawkins was that if a person paid the amount of attention that Nancy did to things, they began to be able to recognize a disaster on the horizon when they saw it, and this had all the signs.

She doesn't want to dwell, doesn't want to try and figure out if she's more worried about what might happen, or how, if something does happen between the cozy streets bright with strings of light, and the chilly, starry night, there's a non zero chance she won't be alright with it. She should. Jonathan, however distant he's become since the move is a good partner, and she cares about him, but his absence weighs on her, maybe more than it should, making things feel more strained than the camaraderie that drew her to him in the beginning.

It's more than just the lack of Jonathan that's brought her here, she knows. Blaming it all on being lonely would be easy, but the fact of the matter is thinking about Steve in the way that some of their conversation steered her thoughts toward feels - natural, almost.

Not so natural that when the familiar shape of his headlights illuminate the parking lot of the mechanic shop she's been waiting for him in, she can stop herself from drawing a deep, sharp breath, her grip on the steering wheel of her car tightening before she catches herself and does what she can to breathe and look at ease, because there's no reason to be anything less than totally casual about driving around with Steve, looking at Christmas lights together.

When she climbs out of the car, her arms crossing to brace herself against the cold while she beats a hasty path from her car to the passenger seat of his, Nancy has managed to get her expression down to something closer to friendly, if not just the slightest bit apprehensive.

Nancy pulls the door of his car shut and looks over at him, her hands reaching out to hover over the vents of his car's heater as she raises her eyebrows expectantly, careful not to let her gaze linger too long. ]

Where to first? Lights, or hot chocolate?
