[ it's not like dirk's done much good in his life. dave turned out the way he did despite the way he was raised: the only thing he personally did was make sure his kid wouldn't die in a fight but even that was shitty because he did it with the worst possible training methods.
and then he still died. repeatedly.
dirk died too. just the once.
for some fucking reason the universe decided to give him a second chance. and his own brain. he'd taken fucking months, years, to come into himself, but he had and he'd worked hard to... not make up for all the shit he did, there's no coming back from that, but to create better memories, things that could never take the place of the old days but could... he doesn't know.
it's the right thing to do.
in any case that's not the point today. the point today is that there's a fight. dirk is always around for fights even if he's not conditionally immortal like a lot of them; he grew up fighting and he's built to fight, so he does. he doesn't have the fucking wackadoo powers everyone's fuckin' got either, but he's fast and sharp and he can hold his own.
he takes needless risks for the sake of others. it's... strange, likely, even after all this time, to see him do something fucking selfless, much less in battle.
does it even really matter who they're fighting? maybe jack is back. maybe it's lord english. maybe it's some fucking fish bitch back from hell that for whatever fucking reason hates dave in particular.
dave. his kid. his bro.

with things the way they are, with how things are going, if she kills dave it's going to stick because it's going to be heroic. he knows how that shit goes now and he can see it happening right in front of him.
so when she fucking swings at him just a little too fast, dirk is right the fuck in her face instead. he manages to stab her right in the gut but she manages to get him too, one two three prongs of a trident almost all the way through him that she yanks right out and jolts forward with again.
she's saying something but he can't hear it; the only reason she isn't able to lop off his fucking head with her trident (what a messy death that would be) is because he moves backward at just the right time.
he doesn't flash step.
he stumbles. ]
