Because we can all use a little advice...


We have general HMDs and love memes, but none with a focus on whether or not our smut is up to par. With complaints of pillow queens or messing up anatomy, this sounds like what the doctor ordered! We're all guilty of goof ups here and there, so there's nothing to be embarrassed about!

Please remember the goal of this meme is to help people write better, not to bash them. If any flaming is spotted or brought to the meme maker's attention, it will be deleted. Be nice, help each other!

For D/s scenes... I want to play a switch and keep the character consistent. Wow this is really hard to explain. I don't want it to be like I just swapped the character's personality out, if that makes sense?

This is kind of going to depend on your character's personality and it might be easier to do with some than others. I have a character who is a switch and the constants with his personality are that he's really laid back, casual, jokey and playful. I try to make sure that's obvious whether he's domming or subbing in a scene.

Domming: Teasing his partner, messing with their hair/clothes, egging them on about how much they're enjoying it, etc.

Subbing: Same as all the above, with the addition of being occasionally difficult (making them work for it, teasing, etc)

Figuring out a character's kinks

I know my kinks and I don't want to just project them. How do you guys figure out what kinks your character might have?

I have this exact same problem. It's hard to stay in character when you know nothing about your character's sex life.

My solution to this has always been to look at the character and say "is there any reason why this character WOULDN'T have this kink" when I want to give a kink to someone.

A character who's canonical love interests are all flat chested, to make up a wildly inappropriate example, is probably not going to be into breastplay, beyond maybe nippleplay.

I personally think you can make just about any kink fit to any character- just make sure you're not directly contradicting things you know to be true about that character, and you're probably good.

Agreed. I don't think there's anything wrong with putting your kinks on your characters are long as there isn't some reason to think they absolutely wouldn't be appropriate.

For instance, a character who grew up traumatized in a war zone probably wouldn't have much fun with gunplay. And a character who's sweet and kind probably wouldn't really get off on cutting/whipping/disemboweling their lovers for giggles.

I know I'm not the only RL virgin who is playing out smut. But I feel like I'm the only one who is doing it badly. I'm just petrified the lack of experience is coming through in my writing. I've done my fair share of reading and research, but that nagging feeling is still there.
