Settings

The City of Rapture: Rapture is an underwater city, located in the north Atlantic Ocean somewhere between Greenland and Iceland built by Andrew Ryan as a utopia for the 40’s elite. It is only accessible by a system of bathyspheres. The city was designed to be self-sufficient, growing and raising its own crops as well as using the surrounding sea life for food, and taking advantage of submarine volcanoes to provide geothermal power to its population. The city consists of many "skyscrapers", inter-linked by walkways and tunnels, with airtight doors between neighboring sections to isolate areas that become flooded from the rest of the city. The buildings, both inside and out, feature a distinctive art deco design motif, reflecting on the era during which they were built (the mid-'40s). In addition to living quarters, Rapture features shopping areas, entertainment venues, laboratories, manufacturing plants, medical facilities, and other common services provided by a functional city. The numbers of buildings visible in the game suggest that Rapture, before catastrophe hit, was home to roughly a million people.

The City of Columbia: Columbia is a floating city high above presumably the same lighthouse that will one day lead to Rapture. The only way to reach the city is by a rocket that launches from the top of the light house. The city is built of connected floating platforms that hold houses, carnivals and other amenities. There is a system of rails called the skyway that connections these platforms though most people get around by blimps. It is typical of a Victorian city with brick buildings and Greco-Roman architecture. It has a very steampunk feel to it with a dash of American Expansionism thrown in and copious religious imagery. It is unclear how the city provides for itself as it is cut off completely from the world below. Columbia is highly segregated where almost all of the population is white. There are mentions of other races being in the city behind the scenes but pretty much everyone living there is a racist.

Scenarios

i. Arrival- You’ve just arrived in the city. It’s time for you to find a place to live and explore a little. Perhaps you can find a helpful local who can show you around.

ii. Daily Life- You’ve been in the city for some time now and have settled in nicely. Perhaps you’ve picked up a job, started a family or are simply enjoying the many riches available to you.

iii. Suspicions- Something’s not quite right in the city. The place you once saw as paradise has started to tarnish and you’re not sure why. Time to do a little investigating into what exactly is going on.

iv. Revolution- You see the truth now. The city is corrupt, wrong and not a utopia at all. You’ve joined Atlas (Rapture) or Vox Populli (Columbia) and you’re ready to bring about the change the city needs.

v. Survival- The revolution has thrown everything into chaos and destruction. Splicers are running around unchecked (Rapture). Comstock’s police are after you for being an anarchist (Columbia). You must hide and stay out of sight to survive and keep the cause going.

vi. Escape- Nothing can save the city now. It’s falling apart and the only hope you have of surviving is escaping the city and getting back to the real world. It won’t be easy to get away but you have to try.

Powers

i. Incinerate or Devil’s Kiss: The pyrokenetic ability to light things on fire, people, machines or buildings. Also able to lay down fire traps that trigger when enemies step on them.

ii. Telekinesis or Bucking Bronco: Send blasts of force to keep your enemies away from you and lift them off their feet to damage them without getting hit yourself. Also able to pull objects into reach.

iii. Hypnotize or Possession: Take control of man or machine for a short time. They’ll attack your enemies instead of you until the effect wears off.

iv. Insect Swarm or Murder of Crows: Hurl a nest of wasps at your enemies, damaging them and distracting them so you can escape. Or call on a flock of crows to damage your enemies while you escape.

v. Electro-Bolt or Shock Jockey: Stun your enemies so that they can’t hurt you while you hurt them. This is doubly effect if used while the enemy is standing in a puddle of water.

vi. Guns: All sorts of guns are in utopia: pistols, rifles, shotguns, and machine guns. Pick one up and start shooting.

You know the thing that's funny to me?

[The man standing besides Booker is staring at one of the many posters lining the buildings along this street. There are marks on his face where someone's carved him a considerably wider grin some time ago, but they don't seem to have affected his chipper mood. He's got one thumb hooked in his pockets and a bright red bowler hat on his head. His other hand holds a length of charcoal, which he uses to indicate the feather-bonneted figure in the poster]

It's that these folks were here long before my grandpop or yours crossed the ocean, but up here we're calling them foreign. Message seems to be that the only real Americans are the ones who used to be Europeans.

Does that seem funny to you?

[Alice was one of the earliest children put into the Little Sister program. She was near death after the fire that took her parents, her life only spared by the disgusting creature that's still nestled inside her belly. Her mind was warped by both the trauma and the doctors' mental conditioning, leaving Alice trapped in the horrorshow of her own mind while her body wandered Rapture in a pleasant dream.

By the time she fought her way out she had partaken quite heavily of 'Eat Me' cake and found herself changed from Little to Big. Alice has her free will, though her sanity's suffered for it, but there's no reversing the changes of her body. Or its current...needs.]

Eyuch.

[She jerks the needle back out of the corpse, finding it full of blood. Disgusting, but the little sing-song urge to gather is still lurking at the back of her head.] One wonders what hardy gang of diseases lurks in this one...

[Veronica hated the arcadia. With its overgrown trees and messy undergrowth. Too many caves for the resident houdini splicers to hide in. Still, it had much to give for the scavenger that wandered in.

Veronica stepped through one of the many sliding doors into the gardens. Her clothes soaked with blood, some of it her's, most of it not. She had been traveling alone for so long that she was about to go stark mad from either the quiet or the mad ravings.

And then, she heared someone speak. And it wasn't followed by a scream or mad laughter. Veroncia answers the voice dryly, almost on instinct.]

Whatever it has, it can't be much worse than what we've already pumped through our bodies.

[Alice pauses, hunched over the corpse. The alarm bells go off in her head--intruder, protect, kill--but she beats them back with a stick. She will not be a slave to those urges, they will wait their turn politely until she chooses to unleash them.]

True. By this point it's likely all of Rapture has the same blood type in its veins. [She stands slowly, needle at the ready. Her armor-clad thin form is shorter than the other Sisters, though she's one of the eldest of the bunch.] But who are you?

It had been a paradise; a place free of persecution, of shackled science, of limits. A world under the waves where the mind was paramount and ambition was as lauded as altruism. They were bettering mankind here in the depths of the sea.

If you could call the people here human anymore.

None of Kit's group remembered their parents, they'd grown in the orphanages of Rapture and been taken later for testing. Plasmid research required sacrifice after all; the lucky ones died. The unlucky ones ended up family. One of hers was missing, which is what found her crouched in the shadows of the theater, watching a group go at a Big Daddy below. The Little Sister was safely away (thankfully) but the insane splicers below were too driven to destruction to care. "Just stay down you...ouch. Idiots." she sighed and settled in to wait.

This was going to take a while.

Rapture ~ Survival

Who knows more about nonshackled science than Veronica? Her and her sister had come down here to work in the medical pavillion under doctor Steinmann. Together they had done marvels, even reanimating dead flesh for transplants.

But then it all went wrong.

the revolution hit and everything went to literal hell. Veroncia had escaped the pavilion before the lockdown, her powers above the average splicers at the cost of her sanity. Her sister.....hadn't been so lucky.

She steps through the doors to the theater, the scent of ADAM drawing her there. Two huge, bloodied blades hung at her sides, held up by telekinesis. She eyes both the splicers and the big daddy hungrily.

Oh...boy. This shit had just stepped up a notch hadn't it? She weighed her options, thinking things through; the experiments had left her family with the need for ADAM just to keep their hearts beating some days, but they weren't running that low back home yet. There was a big difference between salvaging from idiots and trying to get into the mess this was obviously going to become though. Plus the trail she'd been following would only get colder the longer she lingered up in the rafters.

Hmmmm, dangerous super powered individuals and possible starvation or...

...yeah, time, to move on. She snorted softly to herself and ghosted along the shadow wrapped struts. Not softly enough, a spider splicer's distinctive, clicking grind filled the area behind her and she growled. Just another great day in Rapture. "Look out below!" she called, not in warning, really, but in amusement. It was going to be raining spider splicers on top of everything else.

[Billy got in on the splicing game early. He's a performer in a horde of aspiring artists and it's been a constant arms race to hold the audience's attention. Billy used to do it with just his voice, but he's thrown a few special effects into the mix with electric flares and pyrotechnics. But the pressure became more intense, the competition more fierce, and he's had to cut a lot of nasty bargains to get his hands on something that can give him the perfect edge over the others.

Now when the needle hits his skin he can become one with his audience. They dance at his command, sway to the angelic sound of his voice, their wills are his to command. Sometimes he gets so swept up that he forgets the plasmid is doing anything at all, and believes it is simply his singing that compels them to worship and protect him.]

[Today was just another crappy and drab day for Kirby so he did what he always did on such a day; spent in the sports shop. When he finally settled down in this place that's pretty much where he spent all his time. He knew the store owner on a first name basis by now. Half the time he would chat with Kirby about football and sometimes baseball, even though Kirby didn't care too much about it. Whatever, he knew sports and he just wanted to indulge in something that's always been familiar to him.

But eventually the store has to close, and thus Kirby has no choice but to leave.

Okay, Kirby was incredibly good at/used to blending in and keeping a low profile when he was out in public being all ninja on your dates with other boys will give you that skill and generally preferred to live that way since he was forced to live here by his dumb folks. But holy shit was it hard not to so blatantly stare at the kid wearing a gas mask and what looked like a straight jacket as soon as he saw him.]
