Let them eat cake

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

Congratulations, you've survived another orbit around your planet's star! Now go celebrate it, you birthday guy/gal/non-binary pal!

RULES:

  • Post with your character, canon, and preferences - also just for fun, you can add their date of birth in the comments section. Feel free to headcanon or handwave the date if you don't know it.
  • Have fun!

    OPTIONAL PROMPTS:
  • Birthday Party: Celebrate your special day with your friends or family! Reserve an event space or restaurant, celebrate at home, go out and celebrate in town, whatever you wish!
  • Surprise Party: Maybe your pal isn't the type to celebrate, never had a birthday party before, or you got someone or something special planned for them that you have to keep a secret until it's the right time.
  • Quiet Party: A more introverted variety. Staying at home with fewer people, having a less loud celebration with dinner, binge-watching, or just basking in each other's presence.
  • No Show: You had everything planned and prepared, but thanks to something coming up or maybe people just don't like you - nobody showed up for your birthday party. Maybe one friend is just late, or had a change of heart, or maybe pull in a stranger to celebrate with you.
  • Happy Holidays: Your birthday happens to fall on the same day as a holiday, so you either get to celebrate two things at once or have your birthday overshadowed.
  • Gift Giving: Part of what makes birthdays great! Is it something cheap, expensive, maybe even hand-made?
  • Wildcard!

"Fair point." Keir and Lottie tend to be extravagant with their children's birthdays already; not such a far jump to siblings.

"What would you do for your birthday, in a world where it was totally up to you?" he adds, a bit softer.

“You,” is a sly answer, if probably not untrue. After a moment's further thought — elaboration, at least, if not an actual correction — she decides,

“I'd like to go somewhere, just the two of us. Where we don't know anyone, and no one cares about who we are. And we spend a whole week there and we don't show anyone the pictures.”

"We could do it in June," he suggests, warm. "Your half birthday, though we don't have to actually call it that." They wouldn't want anyone getting ideas about annexing it. "A beach, or a lake. Something remote."

“I'd love a lake for my half-birthday,” with a warm, lop-sided smile. “Can you spare me a whole week out of whatever your family needs doing this year?”

—is at least mostly teasing.

He laughs, quiet. "I have multiple texts from Keir in which he asks when I've last taken a proper holiday, I can just show them to him if he objects."

"We could also do it for your birthday, I bet he'd like that." Admittedly, this does skirt the dangerous territory of suggesting to Keir that birthdays ought to be made much of, or at least more than previous, but a quiet fuss being made of Alasdair between the two of them holds as much (if not more) appeal than trying to wrest back her own birthday from the present controlling interests. "And if he really feels left out, I'm happy to drop off Bertie and Reggie to him so he can be involved."

In cat- and dog-sitting for them, yes.

"He absolutely would not take that as a deterrent," he observes with a quiet laugh. "But we could do it anyway. Reduces the chances of him and Lottie just showing up because we happened to think of the same destination at the same time, so we'd have that going for us."

“Oh, we nail his feet to the floor with the animals,” she says, wisely, laughter tugging at the corner of his mouth. “That does feel more effective than just asking nicely. If you just ask him nicely, there's still much too much room for him to decide that he definitely knows better.”
