[She's pretty sure he's talking to Tommy right now. Ellie's supposed to be minding her own business, because this doesn't sound like something Joel would come out and talk to her about. But she can't say that eavesdropping isn't something that she does on a regular occasion now that they've established themselves in Jackson. It's pretty much how she gets any information at all, since everyone thinks they need to protect her because "she's just a kid."

At least she has the decency to wait until after Tommy heads back to Maria, Ellie having spent the past ten minutes fussing over one of the ponies she's taken to calling Shimmer. But now there's nothing left on that horse that needs to be brushed or cleaned, and she leaves it to run in the pen while she makes her way over toward Joel.

She climbs up and over the wooden railing instead of opening and going through the gate like a normal person. And when she approaches him, she decides the best course of action to make it seem like she wasn't listening in on his conversation is to wipe under her nose with her index finger and shrug. Like none of this is a big deal.

So...you had a relationship with someone that went bad, huh big guy?

You'd think I'd have a lot of regrets, so many things went wrong in my life... but they helped get me to where I am today just as much as the success stories did. I have a grandson whom I love, and I still value the friendship I had with Agatha, even if it ended badly.
