[Settling back in the chair she sips from her glass.]

I have no intention of playing hero. Grab that bottle, let's go to the park, get you that cigarette you need.

Yeah, can’t see it either. Too much leather and you’d shoot at the opposing team. It’d be fucking glorious anarchy.

Okay, sounds like a plan. Let’s go.

[Jasper pushes back his chair and stands. Grabs his vodka bottle, shot glass, cigarettes, and lighter in one hand. Then holds out his other hand for her.]

And CeCe’s my dog.

Now I feel like I should go crash a sporting event and start a brawl with the cheerleaders.

[She takes his hand and stands up. Then tucks the bottle under her long coat, leaving behind enough cash to cover drinks and a generous tip.]

I do miss having a dog. Tell me about CeCe.

[She leads them outside and starts walking toward the park that is two blocks away.]

I wonder how much bail money we’ll need after.

[Jasper follows her out, falling into step beside her.]

Not much to tell about her. I became her adopted dad after her handler was K.I.A.

Killed in action. Was she a police dog or a military dog?

Yeah. CeCe is raised up as a military brat. Her handler did 36 months in Afghanistan as a linguistic officer, the transport was ambushed in 2015. I knew her because of Bishop. Jake Bishop is her brother. Stevie had come home the month before and I was with her the entire month.

[He searches for his cigarette and lights it up. Takes a drag.]

Longest I’ve ever been with anyone. Back then. I was an asshole. Still am. Mostly.

Military dogs are impressive animals. Some day I would love to meet her. Did you have to do any special training yourself to be able to take her on?

[Selene takes a right and can now see the park ahead.]

Dogs are intuitive animals. Either she is also an asshole and that is why you get along or you aren't as big of an asshole as you think you are.

You’ll get to meet her at some point. And because Jake had her as a little puppy before he handed her to Stevie, he did some extensive training with me to get her to trust me as part of her team and pack. The bonding part I had to work on my own with her. I found out she wouldn’t go to sleep unless someone sang Celine Dion songs to her. That’s why she’s named CeCe, Celine. I guess Stevie saw that I could move passed being a raging asshole and could sing those songs.

[Sings off key. And gives Selene a little twirl as he sings.] We’ll stay forever this wayyyyy. You are safe in my heart. My heart will go onnnnnn!!

Christ, I hate Celine Dion.Every.Fucking.Night.

[She twirled and looked very, very surprised as she did.]

I think even Celine Dion is sick of that song. There must be other options?

I tried. She went full hell hound on me. Okay, not full, but damn.

[Jasper shrugged, while letting go of Selene. And, took a drag of his cigarette.]

[Stepping from the concrete sidewalk onto the grass of the park Selene headed straight to the large, metal swings. She took a seat on one and let it start to sway.]

I will take note of that for my next patrol and have a Celine Dion playlist at the ready.

[Jasper followed Selene into the park and took a seat on the spare swing next to her. He stabbed out the remains of his cigarette at the bottom of his boot.]

You enlisting her and me for patrols? That'd be some crazy shit I'd sign up for.

[Selene glanced at him and nodded. She was pleasantly surprised by his answer.]

Absolutely. I would love that.

[Jasper searches for the shot glass he brought with him, finds it, looks at it and puts it back in his jacket pocket. He takes a swig of vodka from the bottle. And uses one foot on the ground to move the swing slightly in a rocking motion.]

Yeah. I mean, I swore off letting crazy in my life but I'll fall off the wagon for you. Will have to talk to Vic about it first, she'll probably do a trade off.

Victoria, yes?

[She follows suit and takes a drink. Then goes back to gently swaying.]

Nothing crazy. Just keeping things calm when Nathan is locked down. However, I don't want to be the cause of anyone falling off the wagon. You have been through enough.

Yeah, Victoria. Don't worry about it, I'll roll with crap.

[He continues to push the swing into a light rocking motion. And looks at Selene confused.]

You're taking over lockdowns? What'd I miss?

[He hadn't heard about them.]

He mentioned that Victoria would need her people to protect her fledglings. I had not thought about that until now, but I am assuming you would be one of those people that she needs. She is your Elder, yes? I won't step on her toes.

[She looked at Jasper and was surprised to see the confusion. So she wasn't the only one Nathan didn't tell everything to. He was a mystery.]

Going forward, he asked that I protect his lockdowns. I will speak to Nathan again and make sure he still wants that....that nothing has changed.

You won't step on toes. If she thinks she gets a fair trade out then it'll be all good. And yeah, she's my Elder.

[He's still looking at Selene trying to process what she was saying.]

I just thought he'd keep you out of it. You know how he is about this crap. And I don't care, because he should trust you to handle stuff. It's not like you can't.

A fair trade? I am happy to arrange a trade of services should she like. More protection for her fledglings in return for you and CeCe during the full moon?

[Selene put her feet down and stopped the swing.]

Things have changed between us. I think this is his way of opening the door for me, Jasper. Letting me in as much as he can. He is still guarding something from me but this is a start.

Sounds like a deal she’d get behind. When I get a chance, I’ll bring it up with her.

Yeah, that’s a big change. And I get he’s not the easiest guy to have open up, but he gets there…mostly. You’re half way in with him letting you do lockdowns, so more power to you.

[Jasper shrugged, and takes another mouthful of the vodka.]

He is the most stubborn man I have ever known. As frustrating as that can be, I love him for it. For being who he is. I am learning to be more patient. It has its rewards.

Wait, what? You love him? [So dawns the light...].

It was that kind of change! Well, hell, fuck me.

[She paused and her lips quirk in a shy smirk.]

[Jasper takes another swig of his vodka and chuckles.]

C'mon, it'd be like getting blood out of stone if you tried to get it out of him. So, be childish all you want.

He does too. You all do. Maybe we can all find a little bit of that happiness together. Seems impossible to find it alone.

[For as long as she had known Jasper she had always had a soft spot for him no matter how often he said he was an asshole. He was a friend and she had very few of those. Happiness could come from the love she had for Nathan or the friendship she found with people like Jasper. A long life like theirs was difficult. It was hard to find people that could understand. She laughed at that.]

If anyone can get blood from stone, it is me. I am relentless. Only now that I say that I hope I didn't bully him into saying it. One conversation he was pushing me away....the next...

I will ruin it if I let my mind wander down the path of insecurity.
