[A brief, but highly expectant, silence. Then:]

Well, go on, then! Scare me.

Oh, I'm supposed to be scaring you, am I? I thought you were the scourge of New York. Does anything scare you?

You didn't look the type to be scared of me, so I assumed you were offering.

[A faint smile, which blossoms into somewhat bitter laughter.] The scourge of New York? Thanks, I hate it.

[He can't deny his own past actions either, though.] You'd be surprised what scares me. More often than not, I scare myself.

Maybe that's how it is for people like us.

Like us? [Now, that's rare. Usually it's Loki himself pointing out when there are parallels between him and someone else--villain, outcast, overthinker, creature of chaos. It's not unpleasant to be pre-empted for once.]

You have the advantage of me, I think. Tell me more, if you will.

I don't suppose gods pay much attention to the affairs of men and mutants.

Well, as you have so acutely pointed out, I'm persona non grata in Midgard of late. Actually, even before that disaster, Odin had forbidden Thor and myself from interfering on the planet, so we hadn't visited for centuries.

It's not that I didn't want to pay attention. I just haven't had the chance. So, where are you the scourge of, then?

I didn't think you would let anyone's grata stop you.

I suppose I'm the scourge of homo sapiens, if you listen to the fear mongering. It's hardly my fault that my people have evolved to replace them or that they're not keen to be replaced.

It's not that simple. I do what I want, but there are always consequences, and sometimes the risk is greater than the potential reward.

Obviously, I'm here now anyway, though.

[He tilts his head one way, then another, as if trying to analyze homo sapiens versus my people, maybe taking a closer look at his conversational companion. The concept of mutants is not unknown to him; they've been around Midgard for centuries, it's just that the rest of the population didn't notice until recently.] You think of yourself as a whole new species, then?

The status quo is always jealous of the extraordinary, and terrified of disruption. It's not just your planet that does that, unfortunately.

We are a whole new species and, unfortunately, we have to live on this planet. They can share it or give way to evolution, but their plan of oppressing us isn't going to fly.

Not to offend, but from an alien perspective, you're all Midgardians. Or Terrans, I suppose, depending on terminology. Someone from a drastically different world will still look at the lot of you and have trouble distinguishing humans from mutants until you open your mouth or do something impressive.

Technically, you don't have to live on this planet, at least not as individuals. It will be the cradle for your kind; mutants will still be born here, but you could go elsewhere. But everywhere you go that's already inhabited, there will be friction and prejudice. That's just how sapient species are, with very few exceptions.

I don't envy your position, either way. I do recommend against trying to forcibly take over the planet, though, for whatever that's worth. I didn't have a good time.

You started with New York. I wouldn't have recommended that. Too many people, too much nauseating American jingoism and crass American bravado. If you wanted to start with subjugating America, you should have started with the seat of power in Washington.
