( after the summit that summarily disbands her inquisition, most expect the lavender elf at its head to return to her summer home in orlais to lick her wounds—most notably, her fucking arm—the estate itself a gift from her lover, the emperor, who ostentatiously behaves as if her unwillingness to surrender control to divine victoria is no more than a fit of pique and soon mended. margaux, who has spent the years since halamshiral as a decoy for briala (there is no fool like an old fool, after all, look at this trinket he gives his own uppity knife-ear when she speaks for her friend, a title that she might have company in the halls of power),

is fucking piqued, but briala's betrayal — a pragmatic defanging, margaux's protection turning her into briala's greatest threat whether she liked it or not — is but one upon a list of the same. skyhold is still hers and she returns to it with a small retinue, only, only those who would not leave. she disappears into the undercroft with dagna and harritt and the first couple of attempts at a new arm are not very graceful (she writes to vivienne, does she know a clever jeweler who likes money and travel? maybe varric will if she doesn't,) but on the fourth attempt weaponizing it doesn't melt the fucking hand off, and the delicate, dangerous thing they end up with has promise, yet to be battle-tested.

she takes a bucket of white paint, stands in the center of the rotunda, and spins. it does not feel as good as she expects it to. she gets more paint.

she thinks about staying here in her hold, up her mountain. maybe someone else can go save the fucking world, since it's so damned determined not to stay saved. but she had done the job in the first place because no one else was going to, and it's at least partly her mess, and the part of her that wants to rocket her new fist up fen'harel's backside so hard the elemental magic it unleashes upon impact blasts out through his eye-sockets,

it listens when leliana says she's made contact with the warden — the warden! heavens, margaux says, i could learn a thing or two from these heroes that disappear when their stories are over — there is no question that margaux will not go, herself, to make her case. the warden is a mage, she's heard, but maybe having disbanded the templar order when she took them for her own sword-arm will counterbalance leaving the rebel mages to their fate. she's made a case for it actually being very respectful to let them make their own way, at least in her own head, crafting the arguments for defense of her various controversial decisions (she does not consider celene's death one of them) all the way to the tavern that they aren't actually meeting inside of. a landmark, instead, to a quiet glade nearby the village, unremarkable but for— )
