Dystopian AU

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

1. Stronghold - Inside the walls, we are safe. Outside the walls, there is only madness, desolation, and thirst. Everything you need is here. Mother protects us. Mother sees to all our needs. To defy or to question Mother is to put all our lives at risk.
2. Rebels against the Government - You know each other only by code names. You’ve met each other only within the safety of illegal, anonymous networks. You can only hope and trust that they are loyal to your cause, and that none of this is a trap.
3. Re-education - Once, you questioned. Once, you doubted. You know this, but you have learned of your folly. The Ludovico technique of aversion therapy is unparalleled at rehabilitating criminals. Traitors. So-called ‘free-thinkers’. You’re better now. Isn’t it wonderful, to be a productive and unquestioning member of society?
4. The Ministry of Culture - Art is lies, and lies are forbidden. Love is treachery, and treachery is forbidden. Sex is deviance, and deviance is punishable by death. History is regression, and regression is a crime. Music is rebellion, and rebellion is intolerable. Any citizens found in possession of deviant and false publications will be punished.
5. Population Control - Resources are finite. There are too many mouths to feed and not enough arable land. Which is why you have been chosen to be culled. Only the strongest, the smartest, and the most resourceful are needed in the new society. One person from your group will be permitted to survive and to return to society, richly rewarded. Everyone else must die. Weapons are right over there.

[I don't know if you know Stargate at all? Astarte's a Goa'uld, in that universe ancient parasites that ruled Earth when the pyramids were built. Her forces could have conquered the Empire and Arrakis and now she's come to investigate rumours of the Lisan al Gaib?]

[I do know about Stargate, yes, and this crossover idea is wonderful. I'd love to do a thing! Would you prefer if you or I wrote the starter?]

[As we're setting it in Dune world would you be alright with starting so that you can set out the timeframe when you want it to happen?]

[Paul is used to being hunted. The only thing that's changed is who's doing the hunting. The invaders would want to take the Lisan al-Gaib, both to dismantle his myth and to remove a persistent thorn in their side. While he hasn't been able to drive them off outright, he's remained a menace to supplies and stragglers. Muad'Dib has taken charge as the protector of Arrakis and the figurehead of remaining organized resistance.

He's learned to keep to the shadows, keeping his personal legend alive by picking off any intruders foolish enough to come to the ruins and pathways where he hides. He sets traps to lure them where he and anyone he's rallied to his side can surround and destroy them as he sees fit. As long as Paul Muad'Dib lives and as long as he stalks the invaders, the planet will never truly be conquered.

He's personally seen to the growth of that legend. His tactics are designed to topple empires, and the only thing that's changed, he thinks, is which one he's going to take down.

And he knows that his activities and rumors of his presence will draw whoever led the conquest to his doorstep, where Paul will get to see who his enemy is. It's something he anticipates and dreads. Paul is powerful, but not invulnerable under the messianic trappings - though he suspects the same of the enemy. In this they may have uncomfortable similarities, while one fights to conquer and the other fights to drive off the invaders and protect his adopted homeworld.]

[Even after thousands of years there was nothing quite like the thrill of conquest and the empire of Shaddam IV Corrino had proved easier than Astarte had expected. Having gained access to the Emperor himself she had quickly turned him into her puppet and begun to bend his empire to her will. Most were suborned, some had resisted, but the Sardaukar were formidable warriors, even more so when converted into Jaffa and after letting them loose on several worlds the rest had quickly fallen into line. All but Arrakis.

Astarte cared little for the petty scheming of the humans who governed the world, but for the next few decades at least controlling the production of spice would be vital to reshaping the empire to her designs. Worse than that, rebellion had taken root and that was something that the goddess simply could not accept. So she had come to the desert world in person, tortured and executed the governor for his failures and extended a hand of peace to any and all Fremen that would submit to enlightenment. Some had, but many followed Muad'Dib, a rebel who dared to continue his defiance and who was rumoured to possess power to see the future, a rumour which had led Astarte to the dusty canyons of Arrakis.

The only sign of her presence is the light indentation of footprints in the sand, completely invisible thanks to the cloaking device on her arm. Her Sardaukar Jaffa blocked off the entrances at one end whilst she had entered from another, the myriad of passageways making it unlikely she would locate the resistance leader quickly if at all, but if she were to end his defiance it would be with honeyed words not the tip of a sword.

But she was not worried for herself, her security was guaranteed, if not by her personal shield and Kara'kesh then the potent pheromones which rendered humans utterly pliant to her will. One way or another she would bring this Muad'Dib into her power and as sweat beaded on her forehead from the rising heat, fuming at the indignity of having to walk through these canyons herself, Astarte entertained herself with all the things she would do to Muad'Dib...if that was she ever found him.]
