We're All In This Together

t h e TRAPPED TOGETHER m e m e

Ever wanted to tag a character yours has no good reason to know? Ever wanted your character to be forced to interact with someone they're supposed to hate? Want to stick two friends in a ridiculous situation they can't get out of? Now's your chance!

Your character has been trapped somewhere-- and they're not alone so:

SCENARIOS:

1. TRAPPED IN AN ELEVATOR The old standby. You're stuck until someone can rescue you, or until one or both of you can get this box moving again.

2. TRAPPED IN AN UNDERGROUND BUNKER Maybe there's a nuclear winter, maybe you're hiding out from the zombie horde, or maybe you were just exploring and wandered in here. Doesn't matter, now. You're stuck.

3. TRAPPED IN TRANSIT You were driving long-distance when your ride broke down, so now you're stuck in the middle of nowhere until else someone happens by. Or maybe you're on a bus going cross country with only two seats open and that person over there doesn't look too friendly. Maybe you're just glad you managed to get a seat change on that ten-hour flight because that guy in front of you kept putting his seat back right into your knees. But you're not the only one stuck here, so let's try to make the best of it.

4. TRAPPED IN A MALL AFTER HOURS Somehow, you managed to get stuck in the mall after closing. Maybe you fell asleep in the bathroom, or were hiding in the back of the bookstore, but now the doors are locked, and you've got the whole place almost to yourself.

5. TRAPPED IN A MAZE Entering that maze seemed like such a good idea, didn't it? Only now you can't find your way out, and you're pretty sure you're not alone in here...

6. TRAPPED ON AN ISLAND You should have known better than to trust any three hour cruise or any last minute flight over the ocean. In the chaos you've gotten stuck on a different island from the rest of the survivors (there are others, right?), but you'll probably still be close enough for rescuers to find you if you build a big enough fire. At least you have the island to yourselves... don't you?

7. TRAPPED IN THE WILDERNESS It was a great idea to go trekking out into the wilderness until you got separated from the group you were on, or you lost your map in a mad escape from something... unfortunate. If you're lucky there's a cabin to stay in. If you're less lucky, one of you brought a tent. If not... then you better get trekking home in a hurry. There're animals out there, you know.

8. TRAPPED IN SPACE It may be the final frontier, but that doesn't mean you enjoy being trapped in a capsule waiting to be rescured, or stuck on a ghost spaceship trying to figure out where the crew went, or locked in the cargo hold because you wanted to hop a ride to the next hyperjump and now you can't get out or trapped on that planet you crashed on that looked like it may have friendly natives except now all the plants want to eat you. But you're not the only one and that should help...or make things even worse.

9. TRAPPED IN A BIND These ropes? Are a little tight. That cage? Might just shock you if you move too much. Maybe you shouldn't have pissed off that supervillain by insulting his cape, or maybe it's the fault of your rival trying to prevent you from showing up to the competition, or maybe you really should stay out of those cornfields after midnight because things like this always happen to you. But hey, someone else is here, too, and together you can figure out a way out of this mess...right?

( it is very late. or very early, depending on your perspective, but either way—

business class is quiet at this hour, however many miles above the earth, speeding interminably slowly towards los angeles. no one has been by to offer her anything to drink unprompted for ages, and no matter how she arranges herself or which pillow she tries she can't seem to sleep. she finished her book half an hour ago. this flight does have service, which is fantastic, but no one is answering her texts and it would feel rude, somehow, to make a call in this quiet. there are only a scattered few number of passengers in the mostly-dark cabin,

but one other light on, in the pod opposite her.

gwenaëlle leaves it, for a time. if it's rude to make a call, how is making conversation with a stranger any better?

eventually, she decides: because the stranger gets to participate, instead of just being forced to listen to a one-sided conversation with someone else. she puts her slippers on, and crosses the aisle— )

[ stuck on a (possibly derelict) spaceship of unknown origin and needing to repair it so they can get to the nearest inhabited location, or something similar, jumps out as a fun team-up scenario. pretty open to ideas though! cross canon naturally loved for this, but wide ota; canon, cross canon, AUs, OCs, timeline fuckery all welcome. ]

The one thing Jiang Yanli always tries to be is early. The young woman didn't have the sleep schedule that her brother had. She couldn't very well sleep until noon and then go about her day. Honestly, she's not even sure that her baby brother, Jiang Wanyin, could do such a thing either.

Life, in all honesty, had been weird when instead of dying she'd hit immortality. Which meant that she'd taken a lot of time to heal. After all, she'd lost so much. To the point where she'd almost even lost her brothers. The one that she thought she'd lose had finally hit immortality too and was living a wonderful life with his husband. Something she couldn't be any more grateful for. Her brothers got to live happy lives, as did she.

She, herself, ran a little restaurant called Lotus Pier. Something that she prided herself in. It allowed her to give people, of the modern day and age, a taste of her signature soup. Unfortunately, there were a few other things that she needed to do before heading to her business and that was how she'd ended up in an elevator.

Of course, there was another in it with her. What neither of them probably expected, unfortunately, was for the thing to lurch to a stop. That was not a cause for panic. Though, she's seen others panic for less.

Mo Ran is, by nature, a night owl. He's trained his body to wake up early, given the fact that he holds down a proper job and is still trying to work his way up the ranks, but it's not always easy dragging out of bed. It helps that he's also something of a morning person— once he's awake, he's generally chipper despite the fact that he hadn't gotten much sleep.

However, that lack of sleep sometimes means he ends up running late. Which was the case that morning, making him stumble out of bed and into a quick shower, nowhere near as long as he liked to spend in the shower, and then out of the house without coffee. He'd ordered coffee and a breakfast sandwich in hopes that they would be ready by the time he got to the cafe and he could quickly grab them, but when he arrived at the cafe, he'd discovered the place was out of food, and his coffee order was wrong. He'd taken it, of course, the need for caffeine overriding his dislike of sickly sweet coffee.

He would have ended up ten minutes late, if it hadn't been for the elevator, lurching to a halt. The coffee, because such was his luck that day, sloshed in the cup, some of it spilling out of the lid and splashing on his cuffs. Not a big deal, he could cover it later, but still, it makes him groan.

"Just my luck," he says, flashing a charming smile at the young woman in the elevator with him. "Just our luck. I hope you don't have to be anywhere soon."

The charming smile has her giving a soft smile of her own. She's pretty sure that this is, in all honesty, the first time she's ever had an elevator stop on her. It didn't mean that she wouldn't take the advice that she'd normally give her brothers. Don't panic and be patient. Sometimes all it took was patience. Something her little brothers didn't truly have sometimes.

"No, I don't have to be anywhere soon. I had planned to stop by my restaurant, but it seems the universe had other ideas," she tells him. "Yourself?"

"Ah." He rubs the back of his neck with his free hand, smile going a little sheepish. "I'm going to be late for work. Later than I already am. My boss is going to kill me."

But he does dig around for his phone, unlocking it with one hand and opening up a chat app so he can send his cousin a message that he's running late and is trapped, and repeats it to his boss, who he knows will be monitoring the time, only for neither message to go through. Mo Ran groans, looking at his last messages, with their unable to send notices, and then checks his signal.

"Of course, there's no signal," he grumbles, locking it and putting it away, then turns back to the woman. "Looks like it's just the two of us in here for a while. What's your name, Miss?"

"I'm sure that your boss will understand."

Even if whoever Mo Ran's boss was didn't then she'd talk to them, if need be. The other was going through the same thing that she was. Only difference was there was no boss to get onto her for being late. There were, unfortunately, little brothers that would worry about her. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Wanyin both had a habit of trying to contact her if she said she'd be somewhere and wasn't.

"Jiang Yanli," She says giving a slight bow before raising," And your name Mister?" They might as well talk a bit while they're stuck in the elevator.

"He won't." Chu Wanning will be on his ass the moment he walks in, snapping about how he should be more responsible. He sighs, long and dramatically, then shrugs. "I'll deal, it won't be the first time he'll yell at me for being late."

It's easy for him to shrug it off, since he knows how things will go once he gets into the office, and nothing either of them do will change that.

"It's nice to meet you, Miss Jiang." He flashes a grin at her, dimples showing. "Mo Ran." He bows slightly, not very deep, but enough to be polite, although he winks at her as he straightens. "It's better to be trapped in here with you than all alone."

Yanli listened to Mo Ran as he talked. How his boss wouldn't understand if he was late, even more so when it was beyond his control. That? It didn't sit right with the eldest of the Jiang siblings. Something like that would never sit right with her. If it had been within Mo Ran's control then that would be a different story. Not that she'd agree with anyone being yelled at anyway.

"He won't say a word if he knows what's best for him, Master Mo," She states simply.

She would not hesitate to have words with Chu Wanning if it came down to it. If he opened his mouth and got onto Mo Ran for being late. After all, it wasn't like either of them had wanted to be trapped in an elevator.

"It just means you have someone to talk to, that's all," she tells him with a soft smile.

That does make him laugh. "He says very few words, they just know where to hit. And when combined with the way he looks at me, it's very effective at communicating his displeasure." Which does sometimes enrage Mo Ran, that his boss can get under his skin so easily, even when he knows he should be more mature.

"Nothing to worry about, though." He won't get fired for it, at least. "Where were you headed that has you in this elevator? I don't think there's a floor for immortal beauties here." He might think Chu Wanning is the most beautiful person he's ever seen, but Mo Ran does have eyes and can recognize lovely people when he sees them, and Jiang Yanli is certainly lovely. Besides, he knows most women enjoy flattery.

"He should still watch himself if he knows what's good for him." Even if that meant that Yanli had to show up with Mo Ran. His boss would just have to get over the fact that someone was defending the other. Especially when it was completely out of the other man's hands. Yes, he could have avoided the elevator, but he hadn't. Neither of them had and it landed them stuck. Unfortunately, only one of them had to be somewhere.

She gives him a soft smile at the question," Mainly to see about getting more pork rib for my lotus root and pork rib soup." Something that she enjoyed cooking. Her brothers, however, were not allowed to touch it. Nor would she want them to. However, the mention of immortal beauties does have her blushing a bit," Say that to everyone you meet?"

The thought of Jiang Yanli confronting Chu Wanning is delightful and he doesn't know who would come out the worse for wear. But he does shake his head. "There's no need, Miss Jiang. It'll be fine." He'll get scolded and they'll butt heads and that'll be the end of it.

"A chef, are you?" He slumps against the side of the elevator car, sliding down so he can sit. His pants will be wrinkled later but he doesn't care that much about it. From here, he doesn't look directly up at her, as that would be impolite, but does occasionally glance at her. "And no, only to beautiful people. And not even to all of them." His boss being one such beauty he'd never say that to.
