'I'm fine,' Steven's been insisting. 'Everything's fine. I'm happy. I love you.' In a way he can be as stubborn as Marc. And as worried as Marc had been about putting Steven in danger, giving him things to worry about, breaking his understanding and assumptions about the nature of his existence and the world around him, Steven's taken everything in his stride.

But when he sleeps pressed up next to Marc lying partially on top of him, he can't hide the nightmares Marc's given him. His eyebrows furrow and his grip tightens in the sheet, arm wrapped around Marc growing tense and firm in his distress.

"...Marc..." There's an angry horde of cafe zombies chasing him across the desert in the middle of the night, all hungry growls and groans, and OG Gus's tattered, faded orange fin a thousand times bigger than it should be cutting through the sand like some kind of desert shark. Steven is running as fast as his heavy, sluggish legs can take him, running back past the bodies that were lying outside Khonshu's shrine that start to animate and crawl after him.

"Marc..." Marc is nowhere to be found. Just Steven finally making it into the temple, and there's nowhere to go. He dives into the darkness behind Khonshu's statue, hiding behind his legs--

--and cracks his head painfully on the bottom of a sarcophagus. His bum and his shoulder blades are wet, legs burning and feeling like jelly from all that running. Water slowly seeps in from that invisible gap between the lid and the rim, and the zombies are outside scratching on the surface of the sarcophagus.

"Marc!" Steven is struggling in bed now, giving Marc a hard shove as he tries to push the lid off, blanket snaking around his ankles and waist holding him down, but he's too weak and it's too heavy and the water is rising so fast--

"No-- no, I can't--" Steven coughs and gasps, tears rolling down his cheeks as Marc leaves him to die alone and wet and suffocating trapped in the dark.
