Few fantastical creatures have captured the imaginations of those of us stuck in the mundane quite like mermaids. It's understandable: the ocean provides an endless canvas for us. Who knows what may live in those deep, seemingly endless depths? There's something intriguing about the mermaid, too, as a being that exists between two worlds. Beautiful human up top, dangerously alien down below, a mix between the comforting and the unknown. Such a combination is all very alluring, speaking perfectly of both the sense of freedom and adventure and and the impending doom offered by the high seas. Because of the mystery and excitement provided by mermaids, people have been considering what the relationships between those who live on land and those who dwell in the sea would be like. For as long as there have been mer-tales, there have been stories of lucky or unlucky seafarers who earn the attention of mermaids. In some cautionary tales, merfolk are said to be little more than sirens who relish in driving sailors to their doom, luring them to the waters with gorgeous songs so that ships may be crashed, blood spilt, and flesh rend to fill the bellies of sea-demons. In other, more optimistic tales, there are lonely mermaids who fall in love with sailors, fishermen, and princes and will do anything to be with their objects of affections, even if it means turning to sea foam. Of course, earning a mermaid's love may not be better than becoming their prey; after all, in their ignorance of the children of earth, they may pull a person under the water and forget that air is a necessity for some. Perhaps you are a human or other offspring of the land who has grown up with the tales of mermaids. You know that caution must be taken should you go on the ocean, lest you become nothing more than a meal. If you were in that situation, you would never fall for the merfolk's charms. However, that's so much easier said than done. On the other hand, you could be a mermaid. Whether you are "good" or "bad" depends entirely on upbringing, just like with anyone else. Finally, you've come upon a land dweller. [The mermaids, they say — they aren't so bad. When the mermaids come up from the ocean depths to seek out human mates, they do so not with guile and wiles but seduction and open desire. They'll appear late at night on the shores where boats are docked or where villagers might cast their nets, and they seek out handsome sailors, broad-shouldered fisherwomen. They are impossibly beautiful and impossible to resist — but, the rumors claim, after a night of pleasure, they will slink back into the waters, never to be seen again.

The mermen, on the other hand, are an entirely different breed of fey beast.

Aether knows the rules. One: you must never tell a merman your name. Two: you must never agree to a merman's request for assistance. And three: you must never accept a merman's offer of help. Entering any type of contract with the creature will lead to him taking you as his mate, pulling you down beneath the depths to keep you forever.

Aether's own sister disappeared long ago. Whether or not it was because she became a merman's mate was hotly debated within their village at the time; many of the other townsfolk said that that could be the only explanation, that nothing else would explain the mysterious disappearance of such a bright and beautiful girl, but Aether wasn't convinced. He always knew his sister to be smarter than that. More cunning than that. She would have never not been able to outwit a simple creature of instinct. And then there's the dream, too, the one he's had ever since she disappeared — Lumine, walking slowly into the ocean, letting the seawater soak her dress clean through, until the train of her skirt floating on the water's surface turns into a mermaid's tail, and then the dream ends as she vanishes beneath the waves.

But for her to leave him of her own volition —

Well. It doesn't bear thinking about. Aether left the village the year after she disappeared, once all hope of her return had evaporated like so much seafoam left on the sands. He's been searching for his sister ever since, asking every single person he meets if they know what happens between mermaids and mermen beneath the waves. Of course he hasn't gotten any real answers. If anyone knew such things, maybe they wouldn't fear mermen quite so much.

...This merman has been following him for the past few days. Red-headed, battle-scarred, seemingly athletic. It's not the first time this has happened to Aether, but it's the first time one has been so intent on him, and Aether can't ask the creature what he wants to know in case that's taken as a contract. The traveler figured that if he just ignored the creature for long enough, the merman would swim off to find more likely, more willing prey, but Childe — he calls himself Tartaglia too, which is a confusing thing that only makes Aether distrust him even more — Childe is persistent. He's worn down Aether enough that the traveler has started talking to him, though he knows full well that just talking to him is dangerous.

At camp, when the merman's ginger head pokes up out of the nearby stream, Aether sighs and wonders if he should start staying away from bodies of water.]

Mitsuhide was a very calculating person. He had backup plans for backup plans so that he would be prepared for any situation. Unfortunately, his lack of experience in being out to sea meant that he hadn't taken all possible situations into consideration. Situations such as a strong powerful storm coming up.

The wind was strong, and with the ship's crew scrambling about trying to secure the sails, he didn't notice the heavy rope that swung towards him. The impact was enough to knock him overboard.

With the combination of wearing armor, and the waves caused by the storm, he was having trouble keeping his head above water. If he couldn't back to the ship, chances were high that he would drown.

[Well, for Mermay, how about a "Skin" for Wormwood based off the Sea Weed enemy? Their face becomes less like a mask pattern and more like a full-on flower as they blooms, and a lily pad and matching lotus blossom unfurl form their head as well. They have a purple gem in their chest and the plants that make up their lower body can be legs or unwind into seaweed-like tentacles.

They're beautiful and a huge sweetheart but definitely still a weird little goblin. 1, sorta 3, or 6 preferred; 5 welcome if I know you!]
