[ he's beautiful, but that's not what catches childe's attention. the city of freedom brims with beauty, after all, picturesque and serene. even its people don't carry the weight of hardship in the same way that snezhnayans do.

no, it's something else. childe chooses a table in the tavern closest to the gaggle of knights, not bothering to hide his stare; what use would it be, when all of mondstadt has marked his arrival since the moment he passed the gates? he's a sponge for attention, no matter its nature, but it's getting a bit ridiculous.

regardless, here he is now on a quiet wednesday evening, nursing a tankard of beer (monstadt's hard liquor is disappointing compared to snezhnaya's fare, so he's cutting his losses), with a book open before him. if you asked him what he's reading, he'd have to lie. he'd strolled in at dusk, intending on people-watching for awhile, but his plans had quickly been derailed.

because he can sense it, like a hand closing over his throat. the darkness that plagues his dreams even now. the way it had pulled him down into the mire, heart and mind polluted until he, too, was indistinguishable from the shadows. few can recognize the stench of the abyss on his skin, but even inhale reminds childe of how little he resembles the boy he once was. this is the first time that he's sensed the rot upon another.

—and captain kaeya certainly is an interesting mark. it isn't only his men that flock to him: it seems as if everyone who enters the tavern needs to taken a moment to offer him a word. childe was popular in his hometown, and in liyue up to a point, but never has he managed the charm that sir kaeya seems to radiate. even after he's downed a measure of drink, he loses none of his panache.

childe waits. he waits until the drunken adventurer's guild files out, until the "six-fingered" bard passes out against the doorframe, until charles the bartender has swung by his table half a dozen times to refill his tankard. the knights slowly trickle out the door, until sir kaeya drinks alone. after the intense scrutiny childe had turned upon him, of course he'd known to stay. he's a knight of mondstadt, so his duties involve making sure the harbinger in town isn't causing any problems.

the chill in the air only intensifies as the patrons of angel's share file out. childe runs his fingers over his lips, his heart thudding in his chest. he could leave this little mystery behind and go about his business. he's in mondstadt simply because the tsaritsa had wanted him to stay out of the way for awhile, he knows, even though he's been given haphazard orders about investigating the nearby ruins. and yet - childe's never been one to ignore an opportunity once it presents itself.

and sir kaeya of mondstadt, who has set off every alarm in childe's mind simply by virtue of his existence, is the opportunity of a lifetime.

so childe slips into the bench beside kaeya, a death after noon in hand, once they are the lone conscious patrons in the tavern. up here, even the bartender can't see them. ]
