② JEALOUS EX: they are always around you, and whether or not you're over them, you want that trophy partner to show off.
③ BET: someone made you a bet to be with this person or that you couldn't last with this person or some other thing, but whoopsy, feelings got involved.
④ RUNAWAYS: young adults on the run, safer in pairs
⑤ RUMORS: everyone is already saying you did something sexual with them or you're already assumed to be together. why not keep the rumor going?
⑥ CONTINGENCY PLAN: it was never supposed to be like this, but you made a pact or an agreement (maybe even paid this person to be your partner or was paid to be with this person), and now you're with them.

[ There are times when a Duchess needs to be discreet. A Jedi attracts attention, and her most trusted Jedi is deployed elsewhere. Instead, Ventress has taken the role upon herself. It's an unusual situation, but Satine is nothing if not adaptable.

And adaptable she must be, since this mission doubles as subterfuge.

Satine speaks quietly to the woman next to her. ]

I expect little trouble at the outset; however, I shall rely on your instincts.

['Unusual' about covers it. She keeps telling herself it's just a favour owed - a repayment. It's a convenient dodge so the former Sith Apprentice, now bounty hunter, doesn't have to consider the larger meaning of...well, anything.]

[Her full-face helmet makes security easier, at least, as well as the frankly excellent fake credentials the Duchess had secured her as 'Larris Vel.' It's almost tempting to think about being that new person - after all, she's even growing a shock of white hair these days - but...best to concentrate.]

They won't try here.

[Too open - nowhere to properly disguise an approach. She'd wait for narrow corridors, at least if it was her.]

We're too close to escape vectors.

[ Not being able to see her bodyguard's face is a little disconcerting, as well as the possibility that Ventress may need to use the weapons she carries. Satine still stubbornly prefers nonviolence, though she does carry weapons from time to time. Pacifism doesn't mean complacency. ]

Unfortunately, that is bound to change shortly.

I know where I would try to kill you.

[She is, after all, a former assassin herself. And she does know, too - the corridor beyond the checkpoint, leading into the city - narrow, confined, no room to get around her flanks. That's where she'd stage an ambush. She changes her pace a little, subtly shifting position to just barely be following protocol, just a hair's length behind the Duchess.]

But I have made a pledge to keep you safe. I will honour it.

[She'd prefer to be without the mask, too - if only so that it might for once allow her to convey sincerity. But needs must, at least until they're past security and the holocams.]

[ She supposes that should send a chill down her spine, but Satine has spent so much of her life outrunning assassins that it doesn't make her bat an eye. Just as Ventress changing position behind her is something familiar.

Satine wears her own calm mask as she keeps a steady pace and a keen eye. She doesn't turn to look at her bodyguard, but her reply is similarly sincere: ]

I have no doubt that you will do your utmost.

[What surprises her most is the feeling of being pleased that the Duchess knows that she's being sincere - but she says nothing for the moment, and nothing as they are taken through by the security droids, their IDs given only the most cursory of checks.]

[Her hands move a bit, to her hips, feeling the gift Obi-Wan had given her. She tilts her head, not feeling but hearing...something. Brusquely she stepped in front of the Duchess just as two of the air vents in the tunnel fell down, and IG assassin droids dropped down with them.]

[The small packet at her hip opened, and she drew her lightsabers, both of the red beams shooting into life as she darted forward, trying to cut down the droid's firing angles.]

[ The cursory glance at their IDs earns a sharp look from Satine, though she doesn't comment. Yes, she's very easy to identify, but she expects top-notch security for an event like this.

Speaking of which...

The moment the droids appear in front of them, Satine falls into position behind Ventress. Years of practice has taught her exactly how far away to stay in order not to get in the way but still stay close enough to be protected, if needed.

But she has no intention of sitting idly by. She pulls out a disruptor pistol and takes a shot at one of the droids. Something so small won't shut down an advanced droid, but it's enough to disorient it. ]

[It's good to get into combat again, especially when it's against foes she knows she can defeat. She spins into the first droid, one saber after the other slicing through first one of its weapons arms, and then its trunk, cutting it diagonally in half.]

[To her surprise, Satine's response is a competent one - it divide's the droid's attention, and she can use that to her advantage. She pushes back at the rear two droids with the Force, stabbing through the 'head' of the remaining one, watching it drop. She adjusted her stance, then, deflecting some of the blaster bolts of the rising, rear droids.]

[ Satine knows how to move simply by muscle memory. Same situation, different Force-user. Although the fighting style is bound to be different, there are only so many maneuvers that can be done in such a small space.

Finally, it seems like the venue's security has stepped in, though it's hard to say how much help they'll be against assassin droids. ]

I don't see any more incoming.

[ But she imagines this is only one of the potential ambush points in the building. ]

[She nods, deactivating and replacing the lightsabers with a single, easy motion.]

No, they thought this would be enough. Clearly, they underestimated you, even by yourself.

[Which means they had no idea Asajj would be here, or any other bounty hunter - good. Very good. Now their unknown foe had to scramble to alter their plans. She smiled, behind the helmet.]

Let's go. The quicker we move, the less the chance of interception. We must get you to your rooms.
