Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the

physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by

another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an

exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. BETRAYED. You've been betrayed in some way. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...
22. ADDITION. Babies should be joyous things unless you're in a situation where you know you won't be able to care for them. Either you've adopted or found out you're pregnant.
23. WILDCARD. Just as it says, make your own!

Stede was normally quite fond of visiting clandestine, lawless ports. He rather enjoyed the thrill of the Republic of Pirates, of the black markets and back alleys, but this last trip had been--haunting, he supposed.

It certainly haunted him.

Nothing terribly untoward had happened, quite the contrary in fact. The crew had found and secured provisions, nobody had been killed or maimed (beyond the reasonable, expected amounts of shore leave maiming), and he'd even found a few new books. Unfortunately, the man with the books also happened to be a courier. Stede had thought it novel, at the time, that the fellow had known his name.

He found it less novel when he handed over a sealed envelope addressed to him, written in a flowing, unfamiliar hand.

He found it utterly dreadful when he finally returned to his cabin and read the damned letter. Three pages, none of it good, and all of it excruciatingly personal.

Apparently, their foray to that French party and his subsequent airing of a considerable wealth of filthy laundry had not...endeared him to a great many people. He, of course, had been made when the news of that merchant's ship had become public and....well. There was a reason he preferred the simple, blunt violence of piracy. Revenge was easier to stomach when it was literally an eye for an eye.

He hadn't burned the letter, which would have been wisest, but had stowed it away in the top drawer of his desk. He'd meant to lock it up and try to forget about it--but it was not an empty threat and he found himself checking and rechecking it often enough that locking the drawer was impractical.

It haunted him, like a heart beneath the floorboards beating out a gruesome metronome. He was distracted and it was starting to creep into his sunny demeanor. Or perhaps that was the lack of sleep? Hard to say. Stede preferred the exhaustion to the nagging nightmares, though. He'd been careful to keep his composure with the crew, it was hardly their fault and taking things out on them was inappropriate--but eventually he slipped up.

Lucius had just been, well, his usual self and had made some snide comment about something he was chronicling whilst they went about a lesson on decorum (of all things!) for Ed. Stede had not taken the comment well at all. He'd snatched the log book, thrown his drink in Lucius's face, and narrowly resisted throwing the glass after the man as he shouted him from the room. It was, perhaps, the most volatile his temper had ever been and, the moment it was done, he couldn't even conjure remorse about it.

Tense and irate, fully ready to throw his crystal tumbler, he made the mistake of rounding on the only other person in the room and cast a nasty look at Ed. Ed hadn't said a word, though, and was utterly blameless. The look petered out quickly and turned into a frustrated huff as Stede moved to replace the brandy he'd just thrown in Lucius's face.

He wondered if Ed would let this go without remark but, somehow, that seemed unlikely.

After being forcibly removed from her throne, being literally branded as a traitor to Fillory, wandering in the desert for all that time and confronting long-buried emotions, Margo is exhausted and just wants a good drink. She sits, slouching on her lonely barstool with her wrists wrapped in gauze to conceal the still-healing brands burned into her skin, and cradles a rocks glass of whiskey in her hands.

She glances down the bar and spots a gloved man sitting a few stools down from her. Margo gives him a nod and sips at her whiskey, then gesturing to his hands. “Gloves. Not a bad idea.” If she had a pair with high enough cuffs she might be able to go around without showing off the ugly marks on her wrists and not go through a ridiculous amount of gauze and medical tape.

“What are you drinking?” Margo smiles with a tinge of sadness in her expression, intending to buy them both another round of… whatever it is.

Coming back to real life has been... an adjustment. A necessary one. Steven had said he couldn't live life the way Marc has. And he's right. There's only so much exhilaration and danger he can handle. The only sand they have to deal with being Steven's ring around the bed is a nice change from everything they were tracking around in the desert.

But it's also quite a crash. Abrupt, jarring, and Steven pacing around listlessly while the bleak London weather trudges on outside the windowpane threatens to suck what joy is left out of his life. As it turns out, being able to hide the fact that he's certifiably crazy hasn't helped him land a boring day job that would suit him.

And Marc, well. This ordinary life was never meant for Marc, anyway. He was happy giving Steven everything he wanted. So imagine his surprise when he sees Steven in his organising principle, tired and shivering standing there down the hallway. Back in their safe space, their psych ward, alone again. Naturally.
