( the first thing he registers is that he isn't laying on the floor, and he jerks awake because he's not where he expects to be. the second thing he thinks is some combination of what time is it? and shit shit shit shit as he sits up and gingerly plucks the warm arm set around his waist free. the third thing he realizes is that he. actually has nothing to be worried about? which is a distinctly odd thing to feel now that his nerves are more alert than he needs them to be.

but he should still check his phone.

grabbing his tags to keep them from clacking about, he carefully slips out of bed, reclothing himself and flicking through notifications in practiced deliberation. a pause comes only as he pockets his phone, having decided he has nothing important to attend to. does she have enough for pancakes?

ten minutes later, the satisfying sizzle of griddled cakes can be heard coming from her kitchen, the scent of warm vanilla filling the air. )

[ there have been many moments he's wished he could trick his mind into believing a fanciful lie — that his father might love him, that he wasn't entirely worthless, that he could be satisfied with the wessex fortune and his gorgeous, adultering fiancée — but tristan is far too grounded in the dreary trenches of reality to ever convince himself otherwise. imagination — a thing he doesn't trust, anyway — has always eluded him. the problem is, now, he doesn't know what to trust.

certainly not the duplicitous snake that is callum nova, deceptively relaxed in a swath of early morning sunlight that brightens his tousled hair and sets the sharp angles of his jaw in stark relief. the sheets are warm and so is his skin; tristan knows this because he touched one and then the other, his fingers skating along his bare hip while callum breathed evenly in sleep, hopefully oblivious to the turmoil raging in tristan's head. it's a worrying pattern, waking up naked and dry-mouthed in someone else's room, someone else's bed, only this is by far the worst iteration of this scenario, because he's only ever attempted to murder one person in this house, and that person is now lying inches away him, looking so serene that tristan can't help but want to bloody his teeth.

he swallows and his throat clicks. he wants to roll over and check his glass from last night for any dregs of liquid, but he's distracted by the dusting of freckles across the bridge of callum's nearly but not quite perfect nose. not for the first time — not even for the fiftieth time — he's frustrated that he can't see callum the way everyone else does. does parisa see those freckles too or does he illusion them away? does he make his eyes three shades more piercing or does everyone see that they're really a muted, vintage shade of blue that tristan associates with something timeless, perhaps now even deathless? is tristan the only one overcome with the urge to ram his fist (or his lips) into his jaw every time he sees how chiseled to the point of fucking absurdity it is?

fucking hell, what he wouldn't do for that knife right now. his memories are blessedly fuzzy but no less hateful, callum's hands and lips and teeth all over, a panicked sort of ache moving through him — then a real ache, his sore muscles protesting when he finally rolls onto his back and shields his eyes from the shifting light.

dread. all he feels is a sick sense of dread, his mind buzzing with dumbfounded stupidity at himself, trying to crush the very inconvenient and unwanted desire sparking low in his belly at the thought of callum warm and long-limbed and naked beside him — fuck — because he needs to make room for the dread. christ, if he had the knife he would stab himself and end this misery right now. ]

[ it was early. the fact that she was awake wasn’t at all surprising, what was surprising was the way she had to untangle herself from the sheets and from Clint without waking the archer. once she had achieved that task, she sat up on the edge of the bed and scanned the floor for clothing.

seeing a shirt smack dab on top of the pile, she grabbed her and got up slipping it on to find it was longer than anticipated which meant it was his.

with a soft smile she glanced back at the sleeping avenger before making her way down to the kitchen to cool up some eggs, bacon and french toast for them as the sun began to spill into the bedroom. ]

( he sleeps like a rock, for better or worse. and one thing they don't tell you, or one thing that doesn't really come up in conversation with bucky, really, is how unassumingly heavy the metal arm is, even being vibranium, what with all the bits inside of it too. it doesn't help bucky's also not the lightest guy around, veritably heavier with his super soldier muscle mass.

unfortunately, bucky rolls over in his sleep and now wanda gets to enjoy being pinned down by a really heavy arm that's probably making it a little hard to breath! or at least difficult to get up without a little help. or a conscious bucky. whichever path she decides to take is fair, though. he's hardly a twig. in fact, as already stated, he's basically a rock right now. so. godspeed, wanda. )
