The Hanahaki Disease Meme

The Hanahaki Disease is an illness born from one-sided love, where the patient throws up and coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. The infection can be removed through surgery, but the feelings disappear along with the petals...

1- Discovery:
There's the one person who makes your heart leap into your throat- but wait, that's not your heart. Where are all these flowers coming from? And why do they remind you of your beloved?

2- Concern:
Someone you know has been acting strange lately... Coughing a lot, hiding their hands all the time... It's enough to make anybody worry.

3- Sicker and Sicker:
Coughing up flower petals all the time isn't easy to hide. But it's getting harder to even breathe, now. You're going to have to make a decision, and soon...

4- Confession:
Everyone knows that there's two ways to get rid of Hanahaki: Surgery (the risk dependent on the time period), or confessing your feelings. Time to toe up and face your beloved and just tell them that you love them so much you're dying from it.

5- Post-Op:
The other option... You just couldn't tell them, but you weren't ready to die. Still, without those feelings the world seems a little less colorful. Can you still be friends with them now that you have to start all over? Do you want to?

6- Make your own!
There's flower petals coming out of somebody's mouth in some way for some reason- make this prompt your own.

Just as a note, due to the nature of the meme vivid descriptions of coughing/choking/gagging are probably going to happen. If you want it toned down, make sure to put that in your top-level.

[ There had been a time where thinking about Fyodor only produced a peculiar pressure in his chest or a irritating scratch in his throat. Lately, though, it seems that the frailty of the mortal body has caught up-- the abrupt rib-cage rattling cough that forces itself from Gogol's throat and into an awaiting hand is a reminder of that.

But his gloves are a red dark, at least, and while it hadn't been intentional at the time (how could it have been?) that is convenient for hiding whatever-whenever anything other than petals appear. Gogol paints the crimson from his lips to his cheek and into the fibres of his nice white sleeve with a rare hushed smile. Velvet-y material now warm but wet as he moves his palm to confirm what he already knows is there.

A shaky breath in accompanies the way he casts his gaze back to Fyodor. That's when he flicks the handful of bloody petals to the floor unceremoniously with a single shake of his hand. He breaths steadily out and picks up where their conversation halted mid-word. ]

As I was saying! Recently I learned about yet another very exciting "repeat this ten times" game. Isn't that great? If you say roast ten times fast I'll tell you what the trick is.

[It wasn't a surprise to Kokichi when he'd started coughing up flower petals. He'd seen it happen to other people before - reluctantly so, admittedly, but it was hard to ignore when one of your classmates was almost to the brink of death when he'd been coughing up petals. What an idiot, that Kaito. Even Maki agreed when he'd finally owned up to it, and Kokichi had watched the whole thing with cynical (jealous) eyes.

It was around this time that the Hanahaki disease started really taking hold, after all. High school, puberty, that kind of thing. And Kokichi had made it almost to the end without falling victim.

Almost.

When he'd started coughing up petals, it was when he was outside. In the schoolyard. The crowded schoolyard. That had shattered his train of thought immediately, and any deeper thought he had was replaced with one simple one:

oh, crap.

So then it was a matter of not only dealing with his new problem, but finding out who, exactly, had triggered it. There were plenty of boys who he liked, which meant it could've been any one of them. He just had to test and see how sick he felt around them without them noticing.

Kaito was a lost cause, devoted to Maki - wasn't him. Rantaro had caused nothing, which was a miracle considering he was a handsome blonde well-off prettyboy with a caring heart. Kiibo had also missed the mark, which somehow was a bit surprising, too, but probably was for the best since Miu would've bawled her eyes out over the prospect (and he was honestly surprised she hadn't gotten entrapped by the problem yet, either).

So. That narrowed the prospects significantly. The most obvious one was Shuichi, of course, the gentle and shy detective who Kokichi had been enraptured with thoughts of a forbidden romance between 'phantom thief' and detective, and he was kind and sincere and shy and he honestly gave him cuteness aggression.

And yet, still, nothing. Kokichi had been flat out stumped. It was his feelings. Why hadn't they stood out? Why had he just--...

And then he took notice of where he was primarily coughing up petals from then after. The first time in the schoolyard when he was leaving to go home. The second time? Library. Third? Library. Fourth? Okay, so whoever he had these troublesome feelings for was here. That made the search easier.

And then it finally clicked. That reserve course student. Ken Kaneki. The one that consistently was around the library, and he'd taken a habit up of bothering him every now and then, even if it seemed like Kaneki didn't mind even a bit. He was like Shuichi, but somehow even more agreeable and less confident, which was a strong contrast to the Ultimate Supreme Leader. And that was something that Kokichi realized, much to his dismay, was endearing to him.

The guy had no idea how special he was, no idea how handsome and kind and he never minded when Kokichi made an effort to include him in things, honestly seeming surprised and excited that he was included and his smile was so pretty and he still didn't know everything about him, he always seemed stronger than he let on, and...

Ah. Ahhhhh.

Well, Kokichi had sold the idea to himself even further, which was terrible. So from the time he'd developed the disease to the present day, Kokichi had made an effort to hide his now incredibly transparent feelings for him. But his breathing was getting weaker by the day. Eventually, he'd have to do something about it.

And considering how ironically shy Kokichi was with his feelings, he was assuming that'd have to be an operation. But he was still holding off, still stupidly holding off in some hope that maybe he'd catch Kaneki on the out and they'd both have that realization, and then he could bring him into DICE as his beloved second-in-command...

But either they were both trying to hide it, his feelings were really one sided, or it just hadn't clicked yet because Kaneki was oblivious. He really hoped it was the first or the third, because the second would hurt. In a way, he almost didn't want to know, but he either had to keep waiting it out and maybe die, get it operated out...or confess. He walked into the library that day with intention only to do the former, and when he saw the target of his affections...]

Ka-ne-ki-chaaaa--

[He'd been bouncing over when he suddenly lurched forwards, and...]

HAAAAAGHBLAAAAGH.

[There it went. His dignity and a swell of violet petals all in one fell swoop. He'd bounced over, and he'd unleashed a flood of them on the spot after hiding them for so well for so long. He immediately froze up after that, looking like his fight or flight instinct was having a hell of a time.

(No one expected the villain with the flower themes to be that lethal. There was the anticipation of reasonable things like poison and spores that caused hallucinations. It meant they had worn masks and full coverage going in. It wasn't a bad team-up either. Izuku, Katsuki, Ochaco, and Mina.

The guy was weird. He was also way stronger than any of them could have anticipated. He was a masterclass in his Quirk. Within the first fifteen minutes, Katsuki was writhing furiously against thick vines - which, God damn it, why was it literally always him?! He can feel the thorns snatch at his costume and they weren't ordinary thorns. They ate away at the cloth and were reducing the amount of protection rapidly. Katsuki kept trying to blow them up, but they were like a hydra, growing in twice as quickly as they were destroyed.

There was something in the thorns too. At first, he thought it was poison because of how badly his chest started to feel. For a split second, he actually felt like he was about to die right there, his heart thumping hard, and when he coughed up blood a second later, he was even more convinced. Then he saw Izuku coming straight for him. He couldn't shout out to him, because vines had wrapped over his face and crushed his mask, but he felt the pain in his chest begin to alleviate. Maybe he had just been panicking.

But he wanted to tell Izuku not to come close. There was something wrong with these vines. It was too late though. Izuku always had to be the fucking hero - but the thorns wind up tearing through his costume too. Izuku winds up saving him, because of course he does, but Katsuki can't even fight against it because by the time he does, he's limp in Izuku's arms, half his costume melted off, and the pain worsening again.

Izuku didn't look so hot either, but Katsuki winds up passing out before he can even ask.

Thanks to the girls' combined efforts, they all manage to get out of there alive. Their quirks had simply been better suited and that was that. When Katsuki wakes up, it's next to Izuku. His body felt sore, but worst of all was his chest. They're still under Recovery Girl's watch, but from the looks of it, they came away more with scratches than anything. It felt so much worse than that.

She wasn't anywhere in the area which wasn't too surprising given how late it was. Katsuki forces himself to sit up and is grabbing his chest, a sharp pain shooting up through it.)

Fuck.
