[When Roland wakes, he's not where he should be, but instead under entirely too luxurious sheets, and, dimly, the smell of waffles wafting in from under the door, as well as the smells of a variety of different spices and other elements. The insulation is excellent enough that only highly-muffled sounds make it through the door.

[Something harshly scratchy is rubbing against the back of his left hand, too. Upon moving it, Roland will see that it's adorned by an entirely too familiar sapphire stone - and that the soft sheets don't feel soft at all against it.

On his own, no Chas, no Zed, no scry map or Manny. No Legends. It's back to hitting the pavement with nothing but idle rumors and sharp wit. Trawling through odd happenings posted in local papers, spellwork for marking out odd happenings and the like.

It takes longer. A slower road with sometimes more dire consequences. There's no team of people to save some of these poor sods. There's no time ship to skip through if it isn't a fixed point and make it all bloody better. Sometimes---sometimes there's no getting somewhere in time and that's just what happens in Baltimore.

He's heard rumor and seen evidence of a Wendigo here. Strange to see one this far east in the States but not all creatures play by the rules of old. The best and hardest to catch adapt in new and unpredictable ways. Some things, though---they don't change. Like the carnage.

They'd had this one pegged as a local serial killer, it seems. Ready to take him down. It might've worked had the bloke actually been human. Now there's three injured and one dead. Having bribed the morgue attendant to get downstairs, he sighs, pulling the sheet back over the young girl's body. Abigail Hobbs, is what the papers say. It also says she was presumed dead some time before and that's also not going into the information with her family.

He tries to see the others, not expecting much. It isn't as if his credentials do much more than get him through the door. He plays at the edges, though. Asking questions of the nurses and those on the fringes of the case that he can slip by. He manages to peek in on Alana and Jack but is stopped by the overnight nurse who just got on shift when he's on the way to Will Graham's room.

His excuses are good but they don't sway the woman. She's a tough bird and is having none of his lip when her patient needs rest. So he puts his hands up in surrender as he takes leave of the hospital and heads out to his hotel room.

What he doesn't expect when his head finally hits the pillow after a half-decent meal and a few drinks at the pub is waking up to the exact same start to the next day. He barely believes it. He knows what it is, the stories, the lore of it. If someone would've told him years back he'd meet his apparent soulmate in the middle of Virginia in his late 30s he'd have laughed them out of the room.

Which then makes problems for the bloody case. Hospitals aren't small what's he supposed to do? Go floor to floor and hope it isn't some random drunk stumbled in off the street in the emergency room? Christ. He's got work to do! Right, no. Doesn't matter.

He's going to go about this business as usual and try to meet the others on his list before worrying about the rest. It isn't as if he's going anywhere soon. ]
