THE HEAD PATTING MEME You want to show some affection to or calm down your significant other, crush, person who has a crush on you, smaller friend, random cute person, or random cute younger person, but the regular shows of emotion like hugs or kisses just won't do. So reach out, push their hair back, and give them a pat on the head. Which, by the way, can be surprisingly comforting when done the right way, I.E., not awkwardly. Or maybe you're the one getting the head pat. Are you embarrassed? Freaking out because ohmigosh they noticed you? Calmed from your freakout? [Remus knows he probably shouldn’t be doing this. He should be grateful that James has left him alone to read the rest of this week’s chapter in their Transfiguration textbook in peace, rather than dragging him away from his homework to engage in something loud and distracting. He should respect James’s right to a quiet moment by himself, just as James has done for him. Even if he did need to get James’s attention, he could just go over to him and get his attention like a normal person.

But. His friend is such a very tempting target, sitting there on the other side of the big Common Room hearth with his brows furrowed as he looks down at his current task. He’s concentrating, not remotely on his guard. It’s just - too perfect an opportunity to miss.

Looking at James out of the corner of his eye, Remus prepares his spell. It’s one he’s been working on himself, a more flexible variation of a simple spell. It’s not perfect yet: the shape it makes in the air looks a bit like a hand, but it lacks the definition of a real person’s hand. You have to be looking for it to know it’s there - it’s barely more than a faint outline of disturbed air currents when it’s in motion - but if you know what you’re looking for, you can see that it looks more like the hand of a cartoon character on Muggle television than anything alive. Still, the aesthetics of this spell aren’t the point; it’s more than capable of doing the job he intends for it to do now.

With a flick of his wand hidden by the arm of his chair, he pounces. The invisible hand sails across the space between them and lands with a faint thump squarely on top of James’s head, flattening the deliberately messy spikes of hair. Then the invisible fingers curl down and ruffle the hair with enthusiastic force.]
