Rory says a lot of shit to himself, and almost all of it is lies. He's been wallflowering as much as has been tolerated, clutching a cup of punch that's long gone hot and been half-spilled with how much he's been jostled about. Why the fuck is he still here. (Haha, of course he knows why. Nazuna's here too, that's why. Don't ask whether this is a coincidence, a 'surprise', or something probably equally as weird; they're all valid responses when it comes to Rory.)

If he just stays until the countdown, it won't be a total loss. He'll feel like he's a normal person for once, maybe get to say goodbye to Nazuna before he slips off, start the new year off a little less pathetically than just sitting in the basement at home while Mom gets railed by a drunkard. Connor had experienced a lot of firsts in his few short months. Deviating during the Revolution had led to living with Hank, which led to Hank reluctantly introducing Connor to holidays- Thanksgiving (sort of an awkward affair with some members of the DPD), Christmas (better in that Hank allowed Connor to decorate his house for the first time in years, including a Christmas tree(!) and gifts), and although Connor wasn't yet allowed to work officially for the DPD, Hank was working on this New Year's Eve. All of which was a very long way of saying that Connor's first NYE was going to be spent alone, watching from home as the rest of Detroit rang in the new year around the city. His face was too recognizable for him to feel comfortable on his own in the crowds expected to flood the downtown area, and despite an invitation extended by Markus himself, he wouldn't be attending New Jericho's black tie fundraiser, either. Not when most androids took pains to avoid him when they spied him out and about running errands for Hank.

But...he also wasn't looking forward to the idea of spending the evening by himself on Hank's couch. Decision made, he stands, moving to the door and calling Sumo to his side. Clipping the leash to the big dog's collar, Connor grabs his well-worn leather jacket and steps out, intending to look for somewhere quiet along the riverfront where he and Sumo can watch the fireworks unobtrusively. Still a part of things, but not in the way. And he's never seen fireworks before, so it will be another first.

Finding himself somewhere familiar, he stops his wandering to lean against the railing in the small park overlooking the Ambassador Bridge and pulls a water bottle out of his pocket to let Sumo have a drink before turning back to face the river. It's a nice view on any evening, but as the chill air whips at his hair and ruffles Sumo's fur, he settles in to view the show.
