not an alpha/beta/omega meme

There's no need for elaborate backstories for this AU. You go into heat, rut, whatever you'd like to call it. You've always done so since you were of age to do so. It's a socially accepted norm, and people have gotten used to the difficulties that come with the mating seasons. Life goes on.

Isn't this alpha/beta/omega, then? No, not at all. In this meme, there are no gender-variant genitalia unless your character comes prepackaged with those. No giant cocks - again, unless your character is already packing - or self-lubricating assholes or anal wombs, and no knotting. Unless that's your thing. There's also no set in stone roles with regards to dominance and submission, and some people do not even feel the inclination towards either. Still, there are a few similarities, mainly being that the pheromones of others can put someone into heat that was not in it before and the bond between mates. In addition, some humans/human-stand-ins have created packlike dynamics in response, but this is not universal.

In this meme, it's just regular old human...oids feeling the urge for sex. And by "urge," we of course mean all-consuming drive. If characters choose to ignore that urge, it will backfire on them. The more they put it off, the more they will lose their control, becoming more irritable and aggressive, and eventually be nothing but a rutting animal until the need to mate is satisfied. Not all heats call for mating, of course, and most people can just relieve themselves, but when you do mate, you feel the urge to stay by their side and essentially "nest." These desires don't always pan out into offspring, and mating isn't forever unless it's mutually decided upon. However, impregnating your mate is said to be one of the most euphoric experiences a person can have, even if some people only mate because they want to utterly possess someone, as mates are bonded for a while.

The North is a different beast, she'd been advised, as if her arrival in Westeros had been little more than the slaughtering of dangerous animals. Quelling, she'd rather think, as slaughter was a word which had never appealed - and there were, even so, beasts which must be destroyed. The lions had been first, and largely regarded as the most treacherous. It was a stag who had incited the rebellion against her father, who had shattered her brother's chest with a hammer, but no stags remained to bear her vengeance. There were the krakens of the Iron Islands, rumored to be lethal and poisonous, and there were the flowers of the South, venomous in their own right, dependent upon the tides of war. There were the slippery trout of the Riverlands, and there were the snakes of Dorne and the wolves of the North; there was no way to know which creatures would deal in trust. She would not simply slaughter them all.

And she has not yet needed to; she has taken King's Landing, and purged there the most insidious evils, and she has begun her long, ranging course up through the heart of Westeros. This country which, as Viserys had long whispered to her, sewed their dragon banners and awaited their savior's return. Yet she was met, it seemed, primarily with wariness. They did not know her and she did not know them - their eyes darted always to the shadows of her dragons, distrustful of such monstrous magic, distrustful of the webs woven to bring her here. But trust was not a spring bloom which took easy root and flourished without tending; it would have to be earned. She would have to confront it on coasts and cliffs and fields and vales, and some day soon, in the snow-strewn reaches of the fabled, untamed North. It is not a day which can be left long waiting.

It is a day that coincides, surely to the gods' great humor, with the onset of her heat. She had felt its lurking presence for days prior, of course - it sprang upon her in the night, drove her heart to a restless hammering, like burning steel on the anvil, and her blood raced, searching. It is nightmarish in all of its vivid madness. Perhaps it had seemed, in an ill-fated moment, manageable; perhaps some part of her had insisted that the queen of the Seven Kingdoms would never be ruled in turn by the tides of her own body. She would not be beset by her heat, another knife held at her throat. She would bear it, with not a single step interrupted. She would receive the Northern emissary sent to treat with her, and she would not be compromised by the flaring of her own blood, with writhed and seethed. If she can tame the fearsome beasts of Westeros, she can keep her own unruly blood at heel.

They are garrisoned at the keep of Seagard, a castle on the coast, where the Blue Fork, lovely for its cerulean waters, begins. It is a place steeped in no precarious history for either herself or the man who rides to meet her. It is a place, she has chosen to believe, where they might confer as two equals, poised at the Neck, the future of the kingdoms hanging in the balance. There is nowhere that these proceedings could have escaped the shadow of such grave uncertainty, but this castle is as fair a place as any, and she has ever been partial to the sea. This is a view of it she has not enjoyed before.

'Enjoy' seems a farfetched word for anything at all, however, in the hours preceding her guest's arrival - she has, in the deepest hours of the night, been ridden wretched by the florid fury of her dreams. She has woken in a sweat, has strived to tremble her way through the worst of her body's thrumming, and has found no mercy by her own desperate hand. There can be no crueler misery than her own body starving for something it cannot have, keening for an answer that will not come. It cannot. There is no place for it.

It is in the council chambers that she greets him - they will be, here, on sound and steady footing, face to face, with the scales tipped neither one way nor the other - and the moment he is brought before her, she must catch herself against the edge of the table, a frantic splay of her fingers to brace the jarring of her body. Is it a scent? The sight of him? The shifting of the room as the atmosphere itself accommodates his presence? It is terrible in its ferocity, and that is all she is certain of - so swiftly does her careful composure find a dozen hairline fractures; so gladly does her poise threaten to abandon her, and the man has done nothing more than step into the room. Her heart, so raucous in its cage of late, goes strangely still, and for a long moment there is a silence in her head so loud that it hums, as open fields do before a violent storm.

He is black-haired, rather plainly dressed so far as the realm's fashions go, and she knows without the benefit of any calculated thought that he was made to deliver to her body what it has so long been aching for. At this realization, her heart does return, and it is frantic. The fingertips she has laid against the table must now remain there as an anchor, a silent willing of her body to keep still, to risk no step forward. She is dressed in silks the color of a summer sky, thin but arranged to drape over her shoulders and long down her waist, baring her arms, her back, and the pale sweep from collarbones to very nearly her navel. This seemed prudent, when she'd been dressing - she would not wear black, as the Northmen seemed to prefer, and she would not assert herself too pointedly with the dragon's red. Blue had seemed innocuous, a compliment to the sea.

Now it feels as if it is far too thin, as if the sudden fever of her skin is burning clean through it, her desire hopelessly incandescent. She cannot treat like this. She could not have brought to bear upon her guest a clever quip even if she'd wanted to, fearing that the words would stumble tellingly, her breath already quickening in her chest.

The noble chambers are peopled with her solemn advisors; she is aware of their presence and it makes her bristle, to her shame: if the gods granted her a single wish in this moment, it would be only to be rid of them. What will they think if she commands them away? There is no safety in treating alone with a stranger, especially one who may well prove to be defiant, an adversary. Even this thought, however, is tinged with fire, and any sensibility is lost within it: her body seems vividly aware of the immediacy of his own, of its virile strength, of the ravaging it promises. Between her thighs there opens a lurid flower at this understanding, one which yearns for the caress of the sun, gathering its anticipation in a dewy flush.

"I would ask of you a moment alone, my lord." Her tone, however - tart, brisk, resisting the pull of something much darker beneath it - does not ask. It commands, and she is aware in her blurred periphery of heads turning in bewilderment, of bodies hesitantly rising, unsure whether the northman himself will oblige such a sudden, senseless request. A private audience so that she might level against him a threat that would, before her advisors, be judged rash? A moment alone so that she might reason gently with him? An illicit bargain? There is no honorable justification.

Slinking somewhere in the humid shadows of her mind, she has begun to reconcile herself to the fact that regardless of whether or not they are left in this room alone, she will cover the distance between them in only a handful of heartbeats more, her eyes a dangerously-glimmering lilac as they hold his own. The North is a different beast.

After the situation had calmed and he'd gotten Huaisang settled, returning to Qinghe was his focus, Meng Yao footsteps brisk as he headed back towards the entrance, although they did slow when he caught sight of Xichen, his fingers flexing. He hadn't expected the reaction he'd gotten during the ceremony when their hands touched and it meant nothing.

Still, he found himself watching for longer than he should have before shaking himself internally and returning to his original goal.
