[That weird kid is back. He seems friendly enough and keeps trying to make pleasant conversation with her, even if she tries to summon her resting nope face while maintaining some professional courtesy. Ned keeps teasing that it looks like she's got a stalker, but let's be real: he probably isn't the first guy to awkwardly crush on a barista (or close to it) and not have the guts to actually say anything about it.

Today, though, he doesn't seem his usual clumsily talkative self. When he asks her for a coffee, she can figure out why. His voice is scratchy, he's got bags under his eyes, and he looks worse than some of the older pastries that haven't been moved from the display cases since she'd started working here. And with the weather being cold and cruddy, it doesn't surprise her that he looks like hell.

When he chooses to sit for a while to drink his coffee instead of just leave, MJ considers him quietly for a moment. No one else is in the store, so she shoots Ned a quick text: Hey, weirdo Peter Parker is back but I'm gonna try and make nice. If you don't hear from me in the next hour, come make sure I'm not murdered, thanks.

A few minutes later, she settles a large to-go cup with the string of a teabag slipping out of the lid in front of her favorite rando customer, initiating contact with him for the first time.]

Ginger turmeric tea with a dash of honey. It should help with that throat. You can use the teabag on your eyes to get rid of that puffiness, too. [She shrugs a shoulder, as though willing him not to make a big deal out of it.] Figured you don't want to be walking around feeling and looking like a giant petri dish.

[ cheol-gang's shirt and the bandaging beneath it are drenched with sweat by the time the taxi reaches the address on the crumpled scrap of paper on the passenger seat, but he hasn't felt this cold since the night he almost succumbed to exposure in childhood. and yet— when he first slumped into the back seat ten minutes ago, all of his willpower was dedicated to keeping his shirt and jacket on despite the insufferable heat lest he reveal his wounds to the south korean taxi driver.

but the fever didn't truly break. his pulse has remained sickeningly rapid; even breathing is laborious now. the pains searing through the gunshot wounds in shoulder and side have grown with the tapering of the contraband morphine in his system until he feels as though he's been impaled by steel rebar; he only barely managed to fight off the urge to yell every time a blemish in the asphalt caught one of the cab's tires.

but he made it here without losing consciousness, and these people, like so many others, owe him a significant monetary debt. everything has a cost, however high. power, refuge, evasion of the law, remaining alive. he paid in advance.

cheol-gang shoves a few crumpled bills into the driver's hand and breathlessly raises himself onto the curb, grasping the top of the car door for balance. in an area this urbanized, the front door to any given building is only a few strides away; within seconds he's banging his fist on the door a few times in warning and keying in the code on the number pad above the handle. he leans against the wall as soon as he's crossed the threshold and immediately shuts the door behind himself with his foot, then looks up at the scene before him: no "these people"— only one woman at the table, unfamiliar, with their usual interpreter nowhere in sight. fuck.

it's been some time since he last spoke any english, and his understanding of it is more academic than practical - but the syndicate is russian, and it's more likely that she knows english than korean. ]

I need antibiotics. Fast. Don't call an ambulance. No hospital. Do you understand?
