Flynn Lives...
Welcome Programs, to the Free Grid!

a Tron-verse meme
Thanks to Kevin Flynn's sacrifice, Sam Flynn's sentimentality, Quorra's memory, and programming help from a handful of others (the younger Flynn determined not to make the same mistakes as the elder)
The Grid has been rebuilt almost from the ground up, and repopulated with some programs he wrote himself, some that were written by Encom colleagues and others still by old CalTech friends (and friends of friends at other universities and think tanks and et cetera)
Some areas are still under construction, more sparsely populated than others, but the city center is thriving, there are The Games (now much less lethal) for the competitive-minded, the End Of Line Club for the partiers and The Archives for those who want to learn (or to impart knowledge) and various other venues (art galleries, shops of every stripe, vehicle mechanics and rentals, even casinos and smaller clubs.) Also the Park and it's resident swarm of Bits, they don't bite, but they might talk you to death.
The Train will get you basically anywhere you need to know, and runs all the time, no need to worry about it being out of service just because it's late. Light cycles are another popular mode of transportation, and the City isn't so big that it can't be walked.
Outside of the City is the Outlands all rugged terrain and cracked vistas. Beyond that is the Sea of Simulation which -now clean and virus-free once more- Sam hopes will begin to spawn ISOs as it once did. Beyond that is The Portal which is the way back to the real world, the realm of the Users.
Sometimes the Portal glitches, it's a known problem, nothing serious, really, just that it occasionally pulls in Programs from other versions of the Grid, other times in the Grid's history. It's a thing, and the new arrivals are generally found within short order and filled in on what's happening. System Monitors and a network of volunteers help with that.
Your character can be a native program, a transplant, even a visiting User, that's up to you. Tag around, get to know each other, have fun and try not to make the place too buggy, nobody wants to deal with that.

Now, while not nearly as wonderful as Atlantis had been, this place is a rather comfortable. And while It could leave any time It pleases, It has enough power and control to keep Itself content. That was a step in the right direction, at least. One day It will get back... but for now, rest, learning, and planning were vital.
Since no one knew who It really was, or WHAT It was, this place provided the necessary power It needed.
Until It sensed her arrival. Well, perhaps It could attain revenge...
It moved silently, as always. Not walking so much as floating. The spaces near Islington seem to morph and move out of Its way: whether out of fear or respect, is hard to tell.]
Door...
[As usual, Its voice is smooth as silk. The name is more of an acknowledgement rather than a greeting.]

It was that shift that caught her attention, because it was at once and in turns, very much like, and nothing at all like Opening.
The voice, however, caught her attention more fully and she straightened, regarding Islington for a moment before commenting, "So it seems I didn't manage to send you quite as far as I had hoped." Not that she fully knew where she was, but she knew where she wasn't, and for a Opener that was often just as good and sometimes fully better.
She wasn't sure yet if this was one of those times or not, but time would tell regardless.

Islington walks around her taking her in, trying to ascertain just how long had passed for her. Not that time had ever held much meaning for It. To an extent Islington would never have a need for time. It comes to a stop in front of her once again. "The question is, how did you get here. Not by intention, I think. No one comes here on purpose."
Well, maybe not no one, but it's a rare enough occurrence that presuming everyone else is here by accident is far easier. "Welcome to The Grid."
The 'T' was emphasised, this was a place as real as any other. Islington had enough grace to respect that much. "Possibly more pleasant than London Below, but not as much as Atlantis."
no subject
As it was she wasn't overly concerned about Islington, either. Wary of, certainly, but the old fear wasn't as deep as it had been.
She tilted her head at the question, making a quiet sound of acknowledgement at the welcome that followed, "The Grid, I see." A little shrug, "And how I found my way here was curiosity. When one finds a door in their house they've not yet been through, it's a natural response to go exploring." At least it was for Openers, for the most part, she wasn't actually sure if that kind of thing was normal for other people.

Islington's tone is still smooth as silk. The inflection is one that a parent might use with an older child who insists on doing the wrong thing, no matter how many instructions they are given. It tilts Its head, curious as always. It is comfortable enough here that It can be patient... Always so very patient.
"You no longer fear me. Interesting. So it has been awhile for you, at least."
Fear was the easiest thing to sense. Not that Islington cares how others feel about It one way or another, but fear is still a great motivator.

"So you've been here all along, then?" She didn't have to ask, she could guess just due to the way the place, this Grid, felt oddly familiar, but she asked anyway, just to make sure that It hadn't somehow managed to get here from wherever she'd sent It the first time, "How do you find it? Friendly locals?"
no subject
Slight twist of the knife more to see how Door will react, after all It had thought she had defeated It as well. Islington spreads Its arms to gesture to the space around them. "Far more accurate to say the Grid found me. But, yes, I have been here all along. It is not unlike Atlantis in many ways, nor unlike London Below. As with all relationships, the friendliness of the locals depends entirely upon how you present yourself. It used to matter which side one was on, but not as much any longer."
Such hadn't mattered to Islington anyway. It had the ability to be on whichever side was most useful to It. Not like Islington had any loyalties to anyone in this place. At least none other than the usefulness they could provide to It.
no subject
Instead it was easier to just continue with the other thread of discussion, nodding, "I suppose people are always going to be people regardless of where they are, and I expect you know as well as I do that people like their sides and teams and tribes."
She had done well with uniting some disparate factions in London Below, but she also knew without her there, without her leadership things would easily fall back to the way they'd been.
no subject
It tempers Its tone. "In the end the battle is the same. Has been the same since Eden."
And if Islington takes it that far, it goes back before then. Before the creation of the universe, the Angels existed, a battle was fought, sides were chosen. So, even the story of Eden is based on the battles Islington has already faced.
no subject
A little shake of her head, "Not the way London Below is as a whole, no, but more the way Knightsbridge is specifically." In the sense that it went on almost forever while still being contained in a very limited amount of space, aside from Islington's presence, she didn't think that the place was as dangerous as the bridge.
no subject
As to the Grid's safety, well, it's safer than it was, but it has it's own dangers, if people wish to seek them out. "There are creatures called 'Programmers'. They are a bit like Openers, only instead of doors, they can control the entire Grid and create places that are pleasant or places of terror. Places to relax or places to compete."
But in the end, they are humans and humans will do as designed.
no subject
She shook her head, "I didn't make it into the city that time, clearly, or I'd have recognized it more readily I suspect." She was also somewhat more secure in the fact that no one would just be letting Islington out. Certainly, the angel might still escape, but that had always been a concern anyway.
no subject
She would be rather foolish to underestimate the Angel at any point in time. Programmers are neither good nor evil and being human, are as easily deceived as anyone else. Islington is not a prisoner here. It is merely waiting. And learning. There are great advantages to having watched over Atlantis. It is not as fool-hearty of the ways of other places that many from London Below might be.
"Surprisingly, even programs have the ability to make things. Of course, they can only do what the programmers desire, but many have a surprising amount of flexibility. Subroutines, I believe they are called."
