I’m going to tell you a secret. First thing’s first, once you’ve finished reading, the letter will burn in your hands with a harmless flame. It’s enchanted. The paper crisps will dance for you. They will form into the first image that you can gather once you finish, so think carefully. Or recklessly, I’m always a fan of that. I only ask that you let me know what you saw.
Yes, in true spectacular fashion, I had to make a show out of it. It wouldn’t be a letter by me if not. Now, I hope you’re drinking an ample whiskey. Actually, I have yet to figure out what alcohol you are. Ask me next time we meet, I’ll have an answer.
Right. The secret. I think I’m becoming a better High King. The magic of the wellspring is slowly depleting and we are finding ways to quench it, but in the midst of it the people of Fillory don’t know a life without it. I did once, before I discovered I could hurt someone with a simple thought.
Today, I picked up the same tools I swore wouldn’t dirty my hands anymore. I taught people to do what trapped me, set me in stone to rot my insides with fear I only knew while I lived on a farm back in Indiana. When I picked those tools and showed these people how to maneuver actual shit onto lands, for them to flourish again, I didn’t feel the dread I thought I would. Fillory isn’t all glitz and yet I care enough to remain and see if I’m of any use.
Perhaps you can find your way here and greet me, or I’ll just become a whisper in the wind for you to seek. Maybe even a breath of relief when you need a break from what is surely a desolate waste.Would you chase me?
