Whether it be Lumine’s soft spot for children, or the curious want to see more from Childe than all the sides he’s already shown, or some combination of both, Lumine was more than happy to help with Childe’s brother. She had so many questions about how he even got here to start with, but Lumine knows the lengths she would go to to see her own brother. Really, this was no different. Family was important. She understood that perhaps better than anyone. Plus, watching all the hoops Childe had to jump through to simultaneously lie and care for his brother was an absolute joy to watch.

Lumine decided that nothing could ruin this. Childe’s little brother deserved to be happy, and if that meant she’d have to perpetuate a lie to do so, so be it.

Of course, this was a thought she had before the young boy had asked just who Lumine was to his big brother! “You seem so close! Is she your girlfriend?” he had innocently teased in much the way any young child would mock another in a very playground-banter-esque way. It was such an innocent question! Easily disputed, too, because kids just didn’t know better.

“I am.”

She wasn’t sure where that confidence came from. Or why she didn’t even try to come up with something else. Maybe it was panic? Because saying “actually I fought your brother quite a few times and also spent a ton of his money” was the first thought to come up. Or maybe it was mischief? Like if Childe was going to make her lie and do all these things to appease his kid brother, she got to tease him a little herself, too?

Lumine didn’t know what the answer was, for sure, but she could lean into this. She even made a point of grabbing Childe’s hand. If he had to pretend to be a toy seller (maker? Admittedly, Lumine couldn’t remember the specifics…) while his brother was around, why not also this? It’d be fun. For her, mostly.

He's been tasked with bringing in a scientist, and maybe if the Winter Soldier had an ego he'd chafe a little at the assignment because it seems way below his pay grade. But orders are orders, and he's built to comply. So he takes it like every other mission, a simple extraction job, collateral damage not an issue, just make sure the scientist lives.

Maybe that's his first mistake, assuming it would be simple. HYDRA intel is usually accurate but in this case they've grossly underestimated how far along Dr. Kang is in his studies. The Soldier is barely through the door before he's fighting through a cadre of robots that seem too advanced for the year they're in, graceful and fluid and nearly human in their movements. It's like nothing he's ever seen before. It isn't long before he's not just fighting to get to Kang, he's genuinely fighting for his life, and maybe deep down, part of him is eager for the challenge. It doesn't happen often.

He doesn't see Kang activate the machine, but he hears something rev up and he's just about to turn his head to investigate when his whole world slips sideways and the laboratory, the robots, Kang, they're all gone. Instead he's standing in a smaller, darkened room. Quiet, but he can hear laughter and conversation not too far away.

"Shit." He may not have much in the way of feelings but frustration is one of them. Somehow he's let his target slip away, or maybe he has, and the only thing for it is to figure out where he is now and how to get back to where he was. So he goes still and takes a second to let his eyes adjust to the dimness, scanning his new surroundings carefully for any threats, or clues, or anything familiar.
