When he agreed to meet Sherlock Holmes on the roof of St. Barts three years ago, he already knew he was going to die. His life was stagnating, his mind growing increasingly unstable. He didn't have anyone to live for, no one ever got that close. But this was James 'I'm sooo changeable' Moriarty. He held true to this until the very last moment, having every intention to end it. He couldn't let Sherlock talk him out of his plan, and he knew deep down that the consulting detective had the skill to do so. They were one in the same, he and Sherlock, two sides of the same coin.

But all it took was a change of heart, wanting to witness the ending of Sherlock's legacy. A swift twist of his wrist at the last moment was all that was needed, blowing a hole through the back of his neck instead of the planned bullet through his brain. The man he hired to collect his body had quite the shock when he found that his boss was still very much alive and need of immediate medical attention.

Fast forward three years later: Sherlock had returned and Moriarty was unsure if he should be angry or... awed. It's been awhile and Sherlock still managed to be interesting, it only took a day of careful thought before he's staring down at his mobile screen, then with a slight quirk of his lips he presses his thumb to Sherlock's name.

She had no idea how long she had been locked up here. There were no clocks, no light by which to judge the passage of time, and even if there were she had hardly been in her right mind enough to keep track.

She didn’t remember how it had happened, didn’t remember any of the details leading up to it, but she remembered dying. Thoughts, feelings, memories; they all washed over her unbidden; regrets, realizations and finally peace as her breaths ceased and her heart stopped beating. She never expected to awaken ever again, and apparently nobody else had expected her to either as when she did Natasha found herself in a box, dark and cold. She tore her way out of it, one of the metal drawers in the morgue where SHIELD housed corpses, and nearly tore the throat out of the terrified coroner, but the cold had stiffened her body and she was subdued before she could escape down the hall.

The next time she opened her eyes she was in a dark, windowless room and she was in restraints.

Those didn’t last long.

Natasha fought out of fear, out of instinct, out of anger and hatred for the memories of a past that still haunted her. She would not be a puppet again, she would not be restrained and controlled. She raged and cursed and clawed at the door but while the restraints had failed the door held. She attacked the agent they sent in some time later, desperate to get free, and after that she saw no one.

Time passed and eventually the hunger caught up with her, made her weak, but as her body weakened her mind strengthened and rational thought returned. She wanted to survive, it was all she ever strived for, and to do that she would have to cooperate.

When next they came back she didn’t struggle, instead letting them put her in chains, poke and prod her and run any tests they wanted. More time passed before they finally fed her, a single bag of donated blood that she devoured cold. The visits became regular after that, the same few doctors and scientists and nobody that she cared about, nobody that she actually knew. Even the Director didn’t grace her with his presence, though Natasha was sure he was watching. He wasn’t who she wondered about, though.

The first serum that was tried on her burned like fire in her veins and even all her Red Room training hadn’t been enough to keep her from screaming in excruciating pain. The next one was better but did nothing to supress her hunger, her bloodlust. She lost count of the iterations before they claimed it acceptable. They didn’t let her out yet, though. They fed her, let her regain her strength before removing her restraints. They pronounced her in control, but they claimed to want to observe her a little longer before they let her out of the cell. As a reward, a show of good faith, though, they allowed her a visitor.
