[Sometimes Derek feels incredibly bitter that he's still stuck as a junior partner after all these years, but he understands. It's his family's name on the door, if he doesn't get seen to be putting in the grunt work, nobody will ever take him seriously. In some respects, it doesn't hurt that he also loves his job, more than anything else in his life, more than he'll let people know. He doesn't think anything of getting into the office before seven every morning and staying until ten or later every night. He's the best damn closer in the city, and everyone knows it. He just has to stick it out a little bit longer before he can get promoted up to senior partner, and then it's just a short hop to name partner.

Tonight had been no different than any other night, finding Derek hunched over his desk, laboriously typing away on his computer, a small explosion of files spread out around him. His secretary poked her head in hours ago, telling him she was heading out — what she really said was, "I'm leaving now, because unlike some people in this room, I actually have a life," to which Derek had mumbled something about saying hi to Boyd for him and then promptly went back to ignoring her — and he's only now registering the crick in his neck, the hollow feeling in his stomach that signifies he really should go home and eat.

It takes him an hour to pack everything up and tidy his office the way he likes, but eventually he's shrugging into his coat and picking up his briefcase. Thank god he has a driver; the last thing he wants right now is to deal with the subway system.

It's in his car, idly watching the neon signs of downtown stream pass the window as the heavy rain that's suddenly rolled in creates little colorful beads of water against the glass as he mulls over his current case, that his phone buzzes. When he fishes it out, he sees it's from his sister.

Derek has no idea what to do with that. He spends a good few minutes formulating replies in his head, ranging from what the fuck do you want? to I'm never nice, before he realizes that responding will just encourage her. Best to ignore it, maybe it'll go away.
