[He has to laugh in spite of himself. He's not drunk, but he does have drink in him, and there's music filtering through the TARDIS speakers (wherever the hell those are), and he wants to move to it but feels silly about it. It's a slower tune, rather than something to really party to. Fits the feel of this particular Doctor (the Edwardian one, the Byronic one, the one who hasn't become a man more suited for war just yet).]

I'm not saying I've got two left feet. I'm just saying they don't exactly run classes on ballroom dancing at the TVA. And by the time I get on the scene, I'm not there to join the party.

[The masquerade was large and impressive, people swirling around the dancefloor in a sea of colors and masks, the room draped just as elegantly. With Jester's mother being the main guest singer, it was only obvious that she and the rest of the Nein would be coming as well. Of course that now included Essek, who was a bit wary but glad of it. He hasn't seen his friends in a number of months, so while he hates parties, he is more happy to see and spend time with them.

Essek is adorned in a stunning dress that Jester insisted that he wear and a mask to match it. The same Jester who later pulls him onto the dancefloor despite his reservations and protests, though he doesn't mind dancing, even likes it, but he would not have her know that and force him to more parties.

The next thing he knows, he's in Fjord's arms and the music begins to slow.]

[ it's not often that he finds himself roped into these kinds of engagements, talked into attending with the promise of entertainment and good times with friends. maybe you'll meet someone new, Lumine had said. someone to keep you busy for the rest of the night.

there wasn't really any need to lay it out like she did, since they both knew that his battle-hungry nature had started to get a little out of control. if he wasn't throwing himself into the middle of a fight between drunkards, he was out picking fights with anyone that looked strong enough to give him a capable go of it, lording over them and poking and prodding at their insecurities until they eventually lashed out at him.

her solution to this was to drag him along to all the soirees and gatherings and balls she had been invited to with the hopes that Childe might find someone to occupy his time with, not knowing that being bored to tears on small talk with people he didn't care about didn't really help matters. if anything, that only made his restless energy worse, but it wasn't enough to dampen her spirits any and so she kept trying with the sort of plucky determination he'd come to adore from her.

this night she's managed to drag him out to a masquerade ball now. even with the masks he can recognize the familiar faces that had also frequented the same venues he had, recognize Lumine's twin brother's familiar blond head of hair and their companions. Childe doesn't know any of them like the twins do, so when she excuses herself to go off and make her rounds he doesn't follow. instead, he'll make his way over to an unoccupied space along the walls - catching a glass of something sweet and lightly alcoholic along the way, which he throws back with a sigh before placing the empty cup on the server's tray - and leans himself up to wait out the rest of the night.

an hour passes. Lumine comes along to check in on him, along with her brother, and when she sees that he's done nothing except go through about four more glasses of what he discovers is sparkling wine, she's none too pleased.

"if you don't at least find someone to dance with in the next fifteen minutes, you're walking home" would carry more of a threat if not for the fact that he imagines it would be good endurance training, but he'll humor her for the night. only when she ends up disappearing into the crowd does he allow his eyes to scan over it, looking for someone new that he most likely wouldn't run into if Lumine kept up her insistence on dragging him out to places like this.

he spots a blond man tucked away by himself, dressed ... like the help? was he a servant or something? the straight-backed posture would suggest otherwise, but he wasn't dressed in any remarkable way, and he had a mask on, so...

ah, well. Childe will push himself off the wall anyway, making his way over and greeting the stranger by way of sliding the flat of his palm over the small of his back and using that to guide them out into the middle of the dance floor. ]
