Hallways*: a free form horror meme

Wherever you meant to go is not where you are. When you look back, there is no door. A hallway stretches out in front of you, with branching corridors and closed doors as far as the eye can see. There are hints of other people around - sounds and voices of others who have found themselves trapped in this space, or those who were originally here. Not everyone is friendly. Just remember: any door you go through will cease to exist. You must go forwards to get out. So, will you make it? *It doesn't have to be a hallway, you might end up in a kitchen that tries to eat you, or knee deep in water of a basement somewhere when you were just on the 18th story.

Warning: tags in this post will deal with themes that include violence, blood, gore and other horror topics. Please communicate your preferences with your threading partners.

(( An odd but kind young man on a quest to stop the appearance of monsters called Nemesis that fall from the sky. Due to the prejudice against those who can use magic like him, he's been raised mostly away from society but has set out on his own and can't help causing chaos and fighting for justice.

Favourite interpretation- it's all in the mind! But keeping it vague is fun. Thinking of throwing in an inner manifestation of his berserk power-up mode to be a hazard. ))

The sound that Seth adds to the collection of people trapped in the seemingly endless supply of corridors is a cataclysmically loud boom. His fist colliding with where a door used to shake the walls and scatters dust, but when that clears... the wall is just as solid as it started.

"This is going to be a whole thing, isn't it?" He asks no one in particular, sighing deeply.

[Given the way his life is, he doesn't really question it anymore when he ends up in an endless hallway with a reindeer girl. That's just how these things go sometimes. Having magical powers certainly would be useful right about now, though.]

Do you think there's some sort of lesson we ought to be learning and that is why we've yet to escape? Or perhaps it's one of those tales where you only win once you choose to give up.

I forfeit! [He yells up at no one, the sound echoing throughout.] ... of course, they must know I'm only doing so to have a chance at escaping and thus, not truly forfeiting. What an unfortunate paradox.

Seth is no stranger to fighting horrifying creatures, but it isn't exactly his idea of fun. Somehow the endless indoors is worse, though. He feels that if he could only get his hands on some nice vegetation, maybe even just a rock, he could settle his unease. The way the mundane has been twisted into something unearthly feels more wrong than the multi-limbed squirming thing that seemed to have evolved to clamber around in hallways.

Slamming a door behind him and then bracing his back to it, as if expecting the wood to bow out when the creature slams into it, Seth stays in place with a screwed up face for a few seconds. He opens one eye to look at the new corridor, which contains a... moose girl? Okay, not even weird by his standards. He's a kid with horns, these things happen.

"...Don't go in there," he says, thumbing over his shoulder at what is now a flat wall and not a door. "Not great stuff."

[One moment she's leading Noelle through Queens castle and the next she's in.... well she's not sure really. A long corridor stretches into the darkness in front, and the walls around them are rough hewn instead of the castle walls that she was familiar with. It's dark and dank and... spooky.

Spooky for someone like Noelle probably!

Speaking of- Susie checks her side then breaths a sigh of relief when she confirms that she didn't get whisked away all on her lonesome. She'd be really pissed if she had to put up with Berdley for as long as she did only to lose Noelle right after rescuing her.

Shifting her weight, she glances to the side and scoffs,]

Tch. Must have missed this hall when the place got renovated.

[...Does that happen here? As far as she could tell this whole dark world sprang into being in the middle of the night.]

Man, fuck crazy-ass mages, this was supposed to be a standard haunted house gig: investigate the activity, crush the wraith, lay their remains to rest, collect his coin and spend his evening in a very dark room with a very understanding lady of the night.

Instead, Eskel found himself in an impossibly long hall, with doors that either spat out some horror and disappeared or didn't work altogether. No way to go but forward.

He could hear other people too, somewhere. Distressed people, probably trapped the same as he was. Guess that explains why the contract-holder's village had so many people disappear of late. Though Eskel had a suspicion the structure--whatever it was-- could reach well beyond its immediate surroundings for prey.

[ shaking off the dust and reworking things after a long sabbatical, so bear with me!

any time before or during '98 preferred; i'm down for non zombie related freeform horror too. i'd especially love to play out the journey through the old training facility on the way to "dispatch" marcus and the simultaneous moral/emotional quagmire of preparing for what they're about to do - either against a wesker to aid/abet with or with your character as a member of the armed team that did most of the dirty work.

i'd also really like to do some locational horror during the 80s in the spencer mansion - the place had big overlook hotel vibes, and i wouldn't be against an outright AU combining RE and the shining either. ]

[this hallway is a particularly vibrant shade of red, rich as arterial blood, and there's a curiously organic quality to things. you get the sense that if you peel the wallpaper back you'll expose cords of muscle and bone, see inner workings that shouldn't be there throb and pulse.

you can go straight ahead, to the left, or to the right. something is behind you, purusing you, close and inexorable. you know, with the stark certainty of dream logic, that if you turn back enough to look at it, even in your peripheral vision, it will be the last thing you ever see. better to choose a direction that offers a chance of escape, no?]

I've got something to show you.

[ the closet in the back of Nancy's room isn't a closet any longer, and because that doesn't make any logical sense, it's not something that she'd tried to explain upon invitation to come over, and it's not something that she tries to explain now, either. pragmatic as ever, Nancy understands full well the idea that seeing is believing, so rather than try to press the idea that there is, in fact, a hallway where her closet had once been, she opts to throw the door open instead.

she'd noticed it a week earlier when she'd been rummaging around for a cardigan she'd sworn she'd washed, dried, and hung. while shoving aside clothes on hangers, she'd parted the curtain of fabric and discovered that the closet was at least two inches deeper than it had been previously, the wall seemingly stretching away from the neatly hung line of sweaters and blouses. alarmed, she'd stumbled out of the closet and slammed the door, wondering if she just needed a little more sleep. but the next day, when she checked on it again, the closet had gotten impossibly bigger. the day after that, she could stand at the end of the closet, her back pressed against the wall, and her fingertips couldn't even brush the edge of a sweater, even if she strained her arm. the next-next day, it wasn't a closet anymore.

the hallway is non-descript past the clothes and the neatly stacked boxes. the walls, upon closer inspection, aren't exactly the same color as the closet itself. the light from Nancy's bedroom illuminates a shallow part of the hallway, but beyond that the light seems to get sucked up. toward the end, soft, muffled noises echo, but their nature dies out before it reaches her bedroom. ]

I walked around the entire house. There's no way this is possible!

[They'd escaped. They'd escaped the hell realm of nightmares, and then managed to just move on with their lives for the most part. There's lingering scars both physical and mental, but the point is that they lived, they lived and made it out.

And with that means that life resumed to normal. A new, old normal. One without blood coursing and being spent, but where it's not painting the walls or the ground or even just other people, and Kate... Settles into the rhythm surprisingly well. There's few panic attacks, but plenty of nightmares. She finds herself busying with work, keeping to crowds more often than not where there's plenty of noise to keep her mind occupied. Rare is the time she finds herself alone these days.

But alone time does happen, and that's when Nancy sends her a text. Something alarming and urgent sounding that has Kate on the next flight to Hawkins, Indiana. The timezone change is brutal, and Kate finds herself quickly tiring as Nancy frantically indicates to her closet. Right up until it stops being a joke and there's no longer any logical reason as to why there's a hallway inside of her closet that defies the laws of physics.]

What the hell have you managed to get yourself into this time, Wheeler?
