THE SUMMER FESTIVAL MEME

Ah, summer: sunny days, clear skies, and endless days of freedom (or at least, childhood memories thereof). It's also the perfect time of year for festivals! So grab a friend or a date, don your concert outfit or your traditional attire, and enjoy the season of fun in the sun!

1. Matsuri
Traditional Japanese summertime festivals feature fun foods, performances, dance, and music. Enjoy a walk around the festival grounds with a friend or sweetheart, and conclude your day by watching fireworks over the water!

Tetsuo had started out the evening pretty pleased with the idea of going to the festival with Jessica. It wasn't the first time they'd been in public as boyfriend and girlfriend or anything, so even if he was still a little flustered at the idea of other people seeing them as a couple, the most uncomfortable thing had really just been wearing the (relatively) formal clothes she'd helped him pick out. He really wasn't used to that sort of outfit, but it was no big deal to make Jessica happy.

At least, that was the most uncomfortable thing before they met up. The way she wore her kimono, though, caught him completely off guard. He'd assumed she'd be dressed modestly for the festival, but the way it settled low on her shoulders like it was about to fall off at any moment and exposed at least as much cleavage as the shirts she liked to wear, it was an ongoing struggle to keep his eyes from wandering. He'd nearly tripped over his own feet when he spotted her, and he still hasn't stopped blushing, even as he strolls about the festival with her, holding her hand and letting his shoulder nudge lightly against hers.

"S-.. s-so, uh.. whaddaya wanna do next, Jess..?"

He was more than content to win prizes for her at games, or get her treats, or really, to do anything that might make her happy. There weren't a lot of ways he could imagine being able to spoil her, so when an opportunity presented itself, he really couldn't resist.

[It's not that fireworks or general festival activities aren't all that interesting. They are, especially when it has been a few years now of long, late nights with screaming children and not having much time to themselves. He almost feels guilty about finding that little bit of relief, that breathing space of not having them around tonight, not having to keep his eyes on them 24/7 lest one or both of them gets a sparkler jammed into their eyeballs or pukes all over their cotton candy stick or whatever misadventure children are wont to tumble into.

No, tonight it is just the two of them, and yes, the fireworks and the festivities are interesting. Can he take his eyes off her for one moment though, to appreciate the garishly colourful and loud display overhead? Or would he even consider letting go of her hand? No, of course not.]

(lio has never been to a... matsuri, he thinks was the word galo used. but then again, he's never really been to much of anything fun. festivals of any kind were nothing more than a dream. a fantasy he could daydream about if he ever made his burnish settlement. what little money mad burnish had needed to be spent on food and supplies, not games and prizes.

so when galo nearly tackled lio with a colorful flyer for promepolis' annual summer matsuri, lio couldn't really think of a reason to say no. hell, the way his eyes sparkled had lio saying yes without even thinking.

after their emotional reunion a few weeks prior, they'd begun dating. without actually, well, going on a date. promepolis was still in the middle of being rebuilt, and lio was swamped with caring for the burnish. they only have a break now due to ignis essentially banning them from working for 72 hours. and if he can't work, he might as well spend time with his... boyfriend. that word still feels so foreign on his tongue.

and that's where lio finds himself now, staring down the dozens of stalls, smells and sounds wafting through the crowd. children chasing each other, teenagers holding hands and eating candy apples, adults in large groups with too much food. he even followed one of galo's whims, wearing a black yukata with tiny little pink flowers on it.

lio's eyes are wide with amazement and wonder. it almost reminds him of the settlement.) This is a festival...
