𝐌𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐎 (Quentin Beck) | Marvel 616
There's only two types of people in the world
The ones that entertain and the ones that observe
Well, baby, I'm a put-on-a-show kinda girl
Don't like the backseat, gotta be first...
All the eyes on me in the center of the ring, just like a circus
panic! at the disco - turn off the lights
I got so sick of being on my own, now the devil won't leave me alone
It's almost like I've found a friend who's in it for the bitter end
Our consciences are always so much heavier than our egos
I set my expectations high so nothing ever comes out right
So shoot a star on the boulevard tonight
I think I'll figure it out with a little more time
But who needs time?
Turn off the lights, turn off the lights
Turn on the charm for me tonight
p!nk - crystal ball
Drinking wine and thinking bliss is on the other side of this
I just need a compass and a willing accomplice
All my doubts that fill my head cascading up and down again
Up and down and 'round again, down and up and down again
Oh, I've had my chances and I've taken them all
Just to end up right back here on the floor
To end up right back here on the floor

𝓜𝔂𝓼𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓸 (Quentin Beck) | The Spectacular Spider-Man
Baby, look at me and tell me what you see
You ain't seen the best of me yet
Give me time, I'll make you forget the rest
I got more to me, and you can set it free
I can catch the moon in my hand
Don't you know who I am?
Remember my name!
marianas trench - celebrity status
Trading in who I've been for shiny celebrity skin
I like to push it and push it until my luck is over...
Sorry you, sorry me, sorry every in-between
Sorry everybody here will never be somebody clean
There's a piece of me they're throwing back at us
And they will buy you and sell you for celebrity status
mother mother - family
A motley crew, a rodeo, a goddamn zoo, a circus show
But, oh, don't you know how it goes?
We are all walking each other home
They is my family, they is my family
They might be crazy, but they is my family
You can't get to them unless you get through me, yeah
You fuck with them, you fuck with me
[Or you can choose a different song, or bring your own instead!]

As for Otto themself, they found the Six coalesced like a symphony on whatever target the Master Planner set their eyes on, and only bad luck and misadventure denied them. By the time Mysterio arrived to give the team a much-needed edge, Otto had the pace of personnel down perfectly, layering crime on crime in preparation for the Taj Mahal of transgressions.
It all went south when Captain Stacy decided to play the hero, trying to 'rescue a civilian' he would have been better served to leave to the Spider's attentions. Otto spared a tentacle mainly to ensure Stacy wouldn't be himself sacrificed, as it would serve the cause of supervillainy poorly indeed to turn public opinion too quickly against them. This, for want of a nail, meant that Otto had not noticed the other officer's pistol, and was shot - in the flesh arm, unhappily! - and, reluctant to leave the scene without a sure exit, waited for the others and then accompanied Mysterio out.
"What a pest!" Otto remarked, clutching their burning arm.
h/c is *excellent*
As well as being very interpersonally pleasant. Beck might not quite be in Octavius's inner circle, but one certainly didn't begrudge Mason and understood that it was no insult. Ock was loyal to all of them and received loyalty in return, was fond and received fondness. Mysterio bent all of one's powers to their disposal when the Master Planner called.
It was simply a damnable string of luck that led to disaster. Not the Spider, for once, but the police captain making a rash decision and the sergeant making an even worse one was -- alarming. Gunshots were loud in real life and trying to figure out quickly if anyone had actually been shot, and who, and where, was not part of the supervillain act that Mysterio enjoyed.
One swiftly redirected one's attention over towards Octavius the moment one saw blood, getting between them and the police. The retreat had been called but Mysterio could certainly spare some illusions and androids to making sure that everyone else was out first, particularly the one who was hurt! To one's surprise, the Spider didn't even try to stop them, instead prioritizing getting the gun out of the sergeant's hands, but it did make it easier to fall back with Doctor Octopus the moment everyone else seemed to have left.
"A bit worse than a pest, Octopus," Mysterio noted, rattled but still keeping up the voice; it was in some ways soothing to one, and hopefully to them too. Though one did drop it then, requesting, "Let me take a look, we might need to take care of it now." Instead of trying to make it all the way back to their lair.
no subject
"You can't just let them get away with it!" The police sergeant was protesting, trying to get the gun back - and over their shoulder, Otto watched and noted the Spider's interference with an intense amount of interest, even despite the pain and the terrible timing of the whole thing. The rest of the Six had escaped, thanks to Mysterio's intervention, and one was already high in their esteem but getting higher every day.
"Not to worry," Otto soothed, reaching over to touch Mysterio's shoulder with one of the tentacles as another two scurried forward to open a manhole. Better to be out of the way--and yet Mysterio wouldn't stop in an alley unless...
Somehow from the outside it looked empty. They paused, and smiled at one. "I appreciate that." Otto pulled half out of their trenchcoat. "What do you need me to do?"
no subject
"Yeah, and if someone hadn't gotten trigger happy I wouldn't be confiscating his toys," Spidey exaggerated-scolded, not at all happy with Sgt. Carter and definitely not because this was 'wasting time' that could be used to go after the Six and they were getting away. No, she was way more upset that she was pretty sure someone had just gotten shot!
It only took a few little tricks, a few adjustments, and the alleyway would be hidden from prying, searching eyes. One didn't need to convince Octavius of that, though; of course it only took them a few moments to catch on. Unsurprising, but still good.
"Try not to move your arm," one advised absently. "I just want to see how badly you're bleeding. And if we're going through the sewers I should probably dress it first anyway." And honestly? One was gonna unfasten one's cape and just use that.
no subject
Captain Stacy, shaken but not defeated, nodded to the Spider in gratitude for stopping one of his men from overstepping. He radioed in to call back the others, and then withdrew as well, thinking everyone had a lot to think about and knowing that, for the purposes of arrest, Mysterio was long gone.
"It does hurt." Otto murmured, "More than many things I have experienced recently."
Their arms - the mechanical ones - took the sleeve of their coat down, and opened up the fabric underneath. It wasn't the worst wound, but the bullet had made a clean entrance and exit, at least, instead of being stuck in bone or ripping muscle. And Mysterio using one's own cape was... incredibly sweet.
"Fortunately it never was clothes that made the magician." Otto murmured, resting their uninjured hand for a moment on Mysterio's globed head. "Thank you, Mysterio."
no subject
Beck had been in on the secret secondhand, and had not been bothered, not prying further. Or acting like one knew anything in front of the others. One was a professional, after all!
A professional who had grown fond of Octavius. "Yeah, I'll bet," one agreed, looking over the wound and wincing. It wasn't like one had to deal with gunshot wounds often; over the years that one had worked with Chameleon something like this had only happened twice, and one was a graze. So he was no expert, but... "Looks like you've got a clean exit wound, and your arm's not broken, but you're bleeding enough that I'm glad we didn't wait." The bullet had obviously missed both bone and artery, though, which was a relief.
One moved to wrap one's cape around their arm, only pausing for a moment when Otto touched their hand to one's globe helmet. One inclined one's head into it, then drew closer to start dressing the wound tightly. "No need, Octopus," one said, slipping back into Mysterio voice most of the way. "Clothes will make a better magician before long. Tinkerer is working on ballistic cloth, and from the way things went tonight, that is an invention that will come not a moment too soon... --Apologies for any pain."
"Otto," Adrian's urgent voice came through their headset as Beck wrapped up their arm. "Are you all right?"
no subject
"Yes, indeed." Otto murmured, watching as Mysterio evaluated and dressed their wound, and didn't miss the way one decided to go Supervillain ID to deal with the problem. "We should have a medical doctor, but I have yet to adopt one from Ravencroft or Ryker's. There--hhh." They stopped, rather being silent than to yelp if Mysterio continued because that part did hurt. Then gently tapped their earpiece.
"No need to worry," Otto kept their voice down, "Mysterio assures me it is an optimal wound and that I shall recover. I will join you at base very shortly. Can you safely keep an eye on the Spider from your position, or have you already left?"

Vulture was relieved, keeping to her holding pattern where she was far enough away and high enough up that she wouldn't be spotted, with any luck, but not retreated as far as the others so that she could head back if needed. She scanned the area, reporting, "She's heading North on 7th Avenue now." Towards them, in fact, but even Vulture could not spot where they had gone thanks to Mysterio's handiwork.
Spidey was nearby, having followed the signs of Doc Ock's retreat on their arms... more worrying, there were some blood droplets if she looked closely. She landed when she lost the trail, looking around but uncertain if they was still anywhere close, or if they'd stopped long enough to cover their tracks better and gotten away.
But her voice wasn't wary or suspicious or aggressive. No, nearish to the alleyway but unable to spot anything strange, looking around, she sounded noticeably worried. To Beck's complete surprise, honestly, after what had happened on New Year's Eve.
"Hey-- Doc? ...If you're around... you're kinda freaking me out. I know you probably can't go to a hospital or anything..." She sighed to herself, adding to herself more quietly, "I wish I at least knew if you were bleeding out somewhere. For once I really hope you guys just got away."
no subject
At Vulture's warning, Otto nodded invisibly, calculating. "My thanks, Adrian. Not to worry." Their beloved guardian angel, who had not ever failed them yet. But there was a strange sabat in the works now. The way the Spider had reacted to Otto being shot, confiscating the gun. It kept sticking in Ock's mental accounting, splinter-like. Demanding attention. No matter how often Otto pushed it gently aside, there it was.
Would an attempted murderer behave that way? Had Spidey murdered anyone else, or had she simply stopped criminals?
When they heard her voice, the piece of ill fitting data got even more intrusive, demanding a resolution. Complete this equation.
Otto got up, gently putting one tentacle to Mysterio's shoulder in pre-emptive warning that they needed to do something potentially irrational. "I do so hate to spoil a good illusion," They apologized, and then pressed off to the mouth of the alley, one arm darting forward to wrap around the Spider's midsection. If they was quick about it - and perhaps if they meant no direct harm? - Spidey was quick but not always quicker than them, particularly in ambush.
"Bold of you to make an enemy of a policeman over a criminal, and bolder to concern yourself with me rather than your own reputation." Otto was calmer, though, "What are you doing? I used to think I knew what motivated you."
no subject
"I'll be close by," Vulture informed them. If they needed to call her in, she wouldn't take long to get there, though she was keeping enough of a distance that the Spider shouldn't be able to spot her unless she did something to draw attention to herself. She even landed on the edge of a roof so that any faint sound of her flight tech wouldn't give her away.
Even as Spidey talked, Mysterio finished wrapping and tying tight the makeshift dressing, though one listened as well. Still inclined to be wary, and honestly holding a bit of a grudge, but who could blame one? One was a little alarmed when Otto made their move, then, but nodded, stepping back and moving the hologram back with one.
"--Whoa!" Spidey was indeed not always quicker than Doc Ock in an ambush, and especially not when her spider-sense didn't go off at all. For a moment that alarmed her, but even as she raised her arms -- to try to tug at the metal arm around her? to try to web Ock in the eyes and make them loosen their grip? -- she realized that meant that this wasn't an attack, and she just. Kind of awkwardly kept them raised in a sort of whoa hold up gesture.
"I mean, the Bugle's going to have a field day with this, but they always do." She was philosophical about that; she knew it 'looked bad' to 'help criminals escape', but looking good wasn't exactly her goal. Which was probably a good thing, because she was apparently pretty bad at it. "The captain okayed it, and honestly? Sgt. Carter weirds me out. What are you doing? You--"
That was Mysterio's cape, tied around Ock's arm; okay, that explained how they'd come out of nowhere. But Spidey wasn't worried about that, eyes focusing on how their arm was wrapped up, how the purple was already discoloring with red. "--You're bleeding. Are you-- How bad is it?"
She didn't want anyone to die, or get badly hurt, and-- she really, really hated guns.

"Thank you, angel." This to Vulture - in both name and nature! The trust and devotion that the Six had. It couldn't be bought with money, like Tombstone thought, or intimidated into people, like Norman thought. Only love could secure this loyalty. Only genuine kindness could configure such a group.
"I should crush you." Otto remarked, but it was not in a cruel way, almost an idle self criticism. "But if you hadn't disarmed that fool, he may have done more harm to me, or to one of the others, or to a civilian. So it was good of you. But to follow me? To express concern for me? Illogical, unwise--the stress. You'll give yourself a heart attack at this rate. Worrying about everyone else."
How bad is it. "I'll survive. Perhaps better, once I understand your motivations."
no subject
Vulture smiled silently from her perch, watching for trouble with hawk's eyes, exactly the guardian that angel would imply.
"Please don't," Spidey requested, letting her hands drop but still mostly limp-noodling in Ock's tentacles. Like a kitten held by her scruff, but in her case she was mostly presenting harmless. Interested in the fact that, so far, Doc Ock was just talking. (A Doc Talk?) "I'm enjoying the breather." Not having to be in pitched combat for once!
"Yeah, well, that's my job. To worry about everyone." It was only slightly a joke, and that was maybe obvious: She also meant it. "You guys included. I don't like guns, and I don't want people dying. I didn't know how bad you were hurt, or if..." She took a breath, nodded to them. "It looks like Mysterio did a good job." But she'd definitely come out here to try and help, just in case no one else could. Even if she didn't have any damn training herself, so yeah, illogical and unwise was right.
no subject
The idea that she didn't want anyone dying - including Otto themself - was new information. "Not what I would have guessed... given that you tried to kill me, twice now - once at my inception as Dr. Octopus, and once when you fought the Six with your black suit."
It wasn't quite an accusation, more an appeal for some missing piece of information. It was so bizarre to them that Spidey sounded so honest about this!
no subject
Even kidnapping Gwen, she hadn't been hurt, Parker had just been completely panicked -- and them bringing the base down, that didn't feel right, Spidey had wondered even then if she'd really messed up their head overloading their systems like that because Electro had still been in there and that really wasn't Doc's M.O.
Instead of any of that, what she said, crouching casually on top of the dumpster, was, "I mean, you attack me for a lot of reasons, not just wisecracking. And sometimes you wisecrack back! I get mixed signals."
But as they said that about her trying to kill them, her eyes widened. "Wait-- I never tried to kill you. I know you weren't thinking straight right after your accident, but like I told you then, I helped save you. I was halfway across the city when I saw Oscorp lighting up like a beacon, I had to slingshot my way there. And..." The black suit. Ohhh, that was bad. "...that night in Central Park, with the black suit. What... exactly... did I try to do again?"
no subject
And Ock was thinking, too. They let her percolate on it for a bit, conscious of their own time limitations, and then frowned.
"I should be more consistent." Ock apologized, only partially facetiously. "The accident... you weren't there? Security footage would put paid to a lie, you must know that." Not that Ock had checked it.
But, the night in Central Park. The Spider sounded as horrified as it was possible to be, at least. "Tried to impale me with one of my own deadened arms. Fortunately the Captain was there to stop you, you were as one possessed."
no subject
A squad car went by, and Spidey glanced out of the alley, then around. Okay, so Mysterio was still here and setting up a couple different illusions, then. One wasn't in sight but it was obvious that she and Ock weren't in sight from outside the alley now either.
"Hey, if you take requests, I like the banter," she offered. More than the smacking. Though she serious'd up now. "...I know. I snuck in and checked the security footage. You were so sure someone had tried to kill you -- and you were right. More right about Norm than I realized, too. I always knew he was horrible, but he was the Green Goblin, and it was Gobby who turned up the juice and locked you in there."
That was horrifying, and somehow only more so when Ock said that about impale with one of their own deadened arms. Holy shit! "You're not exactly wrong," she said weakly. "The suit... The symbiote. You remember the alien ooze that disappeared from the ESU lab?"
"Black Cat arrived before we could complete our own job," Mysterio's voice came from nowhere in the alley; this was actually kind of fascinating but one was still wary. "Why?"
"Okay, Black Cat got there first, but she didn't steal it." Spidey sort of rearranged those facts in her head, even if she didn't quite realize yet that 'Dr. Connors' had been Chameleon. Give her a minute. "It bonded to my suit. And to me. And it wasn't as insentient as we all thought. I was asleep at the wheel during the Central Park fight, literally." As one possessed indeed.
no subject
"The banter does not come naturally." Otto explained, but nodded, at 'I checked the security footage'. There was a certain inexorable and horrible logic to that, to Osborn having tried to kill them, to Osborn being the Goblin, to all those things... being interconnected. Otto inhaled. Uneasy. Maybe slightly blood loss, but slight... weakness.
Steady. Do not be that fearful cowering creature. They didn't speak for a few seconds, until they could trust it.
"You didn't have to tell me that." Otto observed. "Thank you."
And Mysterio weighing in on that suit, the alien... That sounded like a whole different set of problems. "Is that so? You deny both charges. Based on your actions tonight, I don't have much choice but to trust you."
no subject
"Maybe not, but you deserved to know." That answer came easily, because, well... Norm had tried to kill Otto. It was their business kinda by definition.
"You don't have to trust me, but I'm glad if you do. Just be careful," Spidey advised. "I don't know why the symbiote tried to kill you, but they're dangerous. They can get in your head, and if they get a host, they're strong. Way too strong. Don't fight Venom, by the way."
Something clicked for Mysterio, but one didn't say a word about it yet, slightly stunned.
"Look, just--" Spidey glanced towards the entrance of the alleyway, then back at Ock. "...I'll say I lost you. Go get that taken care of. And if you need a hospital, just... don't avoid it because you don't want to go back to Ravencroft, okay? You're a genius. You know better than that."
no subject
A beat. "I can't press charges, you see? It would be pointless. He would have the best lawyers. The best control of the situation, the spin. Only the Daily Bugle might go against the grain, and that is if Osborn made it obvious he was buying public opinion. This is why I need to dismantle this world and rebuild it."
Don't fight Venom. "What if I have no choice?" That was a fair question, at least.
They smiled almost despite themself. "Will I see you again, in a situation like this one? I hope I don't have to be shot to exchange a few words next time."
no subject
She hesitated, then nodded. "I think I get it. And I do think the Bugle would dig up as much dirt as they could, for what it's worth. Triple-J's a real newshound. But they couldn't even keep Tombstone in jail and I haven't heard anything about his supposed 'upcoming trial' in months. I want to fight this stuff too. I think we just disagree on the means."
"You have crossed the line fighting us, Spider." Mysterio's unsourced voice, again, from somewhere in the alley presumably; one couldn't completely sit on one's own grievance towards the Spider, which could not be so easily waved off with oh it wasn't really me.
She winced. "...Yeah, I have. I need to apologize for that but I want to do it directly, if not in person."
The Venom question was a fair one, and she hesitated. "...Good point. If you can, get away from them, but if you have to fight, loud noises really throw them off. I think the vibration hurts them. And the gene cleanser at the ESU lab can separate the symbiote from their host but I'm not sure how easy it'll be to make them eat it a second time. If you can lead them to me or get my attention somehow I think they'll get distracted, though. They really hate me."
The smile, the question-invitation, was interesting and it gave Parker pause, but she admitted, "I'd like that. Maybe... if you're feeling up to it, next Friday at the Chrysler Building, 8PM? If not I'll try the Friday after."
