you meet your soulmate in your dreams every night.

the distant sound of overlapping voices, echoes behind his own words are what bring essek slowly to the surface of his consciousness. while it might not (ever) be daytime in rosohna, essek has learned by now, after many years of sharing dreams, that it must be time to wake wherever his soulmate is, whoever he is. it was a human named bren, for a little while, and then the dreams abruptly ended. essek had feared the worst, that his soulmate is dead and he will never meet him face to face, but the dreams recently resumed, and essek can tell it's the same person. he's different, as one would be after nearly a decade of silence and dreamless trances, but it's still the same soulmate. they are half their hearts; how could essek not know him? the new name he can pick up on between muddled, groggy morning memories is caleb.

a name of the empire, no doubt. a worry, an anxiety that's plagued him since the beginning. but he doesn't need to concern himself with it now.

essek yearns to return to his dreamscape, to hear caleb's voice that he thinks may be zemnian, to sit together in their peaceful space and talk about how they can't wait to meet. there are so many questions essek wants to ask. where did he go for so long? who was bren, and why did he change his name? is he a wizard, too? or will essek need to teach him some spells?

as his station grows, so does his attachment to his dreams. he doesn't have to perform, there. he can be himself for the one fated to be by his side. essek suffers through this, a day of performing for the court, and he can't bring himself into a trance the following night fast enough.

[It almost feels like there's an ongoing game that's been placed upon this entire city, but after seeing the actual results of those that don't play by its rules, he's more than convinced that the contract placed upon him is more than real. And well, he didn't survive multiple assassination attempts and Meteor to die to fate's idea of a joke. If his life wasn't the thing he was gambling, Rufus might actually find this amusing.

Honestly, if he was going to die, he'd rather it would be dramatic, and not something like this.

So the former Shinra heir wastes no time trying to find the one person in this city that is his supposed soulmate, which, is quite funny in itself. He has no clue in who it may be, hopefully someone that he can at least tolerate being around. And hey, the formally dressed man over there may be a good start; he certainly stands out at least. It's something Rufus can appreciate.]

Harry had first met Elaine when he was five or six years old. His father, Malcolm Dresden--a stage magician and single dad--was performing at a kid's birthday party, and had brought his young son along. Harry was sitting quietly in the "backstage" area behind the curtain where his dad kept his extra props when he looked up from his dog-eared comic book and Saw...her.

Not long after that, his father had died of a sudden and tragic illness, and Harry was placed in foster care with Elaine's family, and for the next seven years or so, the pair had become fast friends. Elaine was there when, at nine years old, Harry's magic manifested during PE class as a burst of magical force: enabling the gangly little would be wizard to jump farther than he was ordinarily able to jump. And she was there three years later when the mysterious stranger, Justin Du Morne, came to adopt him and take him away.

Thankfully, she wasn't there to see the abuse--disguised as magical training--that Harry endured at Du Morne's hands. But the secret messages Harry was able to exchange with her via a spirit of intellect named Bob--a ghostly presence which inhabited an enchanted skull that Harry found in Du Morne's collection of magical paraphernalia--kept Harry's spirits up over the next several years.

When Harry was sixteen, the mansion burned down with Justin in it, and the first place Harry went was back to Elaine, with nothing but the clothes on his back, his late mother's silver pentacle, and slightly singed human skull. Bob was the only thing he'd been able to save on his way out of the burning building.

Harry had rapped at her window, soot stained and scared; afraid he might be bringing trouble to his only friend but not having anywhere else to go. And Elaine had introduced him to her uncle, Lucifer Morningstar, who'd helped him out in exchange for the promise that Harry would one day return the favor. Desperate, Harry had agreed, and his life had become very different from then on.

But the one thing that hadn't changed was his love for Elaine Belloc.

[ ooc; Going with this curse needing more than just MEETING for reasons. ]

[ It wasn't the best of missions, but it wasn't the worst of missions either--that's the general consensus given the fact that they A.) actually got paid, and B.) there was minimal clean-up. Even Cordelia only half-complained about her dry-cleaning bills and was able to salvage her new favorite top. So all and all, it was a simple, run-of-the-mill demonic extraction with minimal bloodshed.

Except...for one little detail that Cordelia neglected to share. You know, she has no problem airing her grievances with most things, but every time she tried to bring up the fact that she had encountered a weird bout of demon spray to the face, she couldn't form the words. It was like a weird blockage that she couldn't share if she wanted to.

So she didn't. And at first it was only mildly concerning until...well, one day went by without sleep. Then two. And on the third, even the best concealer wasn't fixing the bags under her eyes. Hell, she even took to just wearing a hoodie as she stares at the coffee machine like it is the cause of all her problems. ]

...You know, I almost don't even care if there's blood in this. I like rare meat. Same difference, right?
