The Midnight Texting Meme It's the middle of the night and you're trying to catch some z's — or brooding alone in the alleys, as one does — when your phone dings and suddenly a stranger or a friend is texting you. What could they possibly want at this hour? Is it important? Stupid? Are they drunk or maybe just needy? Do they need help hiding a body??? Pick up your phone and find out! [That didn't really answer why she's texting him, of all people. She's not on to him, is she? No, no. She couldn't be. This could be something else. No reason to panic.]

I'm sure trying to get in the head of vicious murderers doesn't help either. [That was not much of a problem for him.]

I prefer leaving work out of my dreams, when I’m able but it doesn’t always work out that way.

[ She sighs softly feeling like an idiot, this wasn’t something she had thought through and it showed. After a moment she sends another text. ]

My team and I are going to be here a while, and I was wondering if you…

[ She can’t finish that sentence and instead just hits send.]

[Dexter could be quite oblivious sometimes, but he's learned enough over the years about human interaction to understand what's happening now. She's not onto him. She's into him. How about that? Of the options, it's certainly the best and most welcome.]

Agent Jareau, are you asking me out on a date? How scandalous!

What? No, of course not.

[ What? Yes, of course she was. However she a bit off her game. In truth she hadn’t dated anyone since Will, who she had a kid with. That was a story for a different day or maybe never at all.

It was hard at times for Jennifer to be just Jennifer as her job required her to profile people and their actions. Just meeting someone out on a jog, or in a store she had to shut off the profiler part of her brain and it wasn’t easy. ]

[She's not? Now Dexter is confused. Maybe he's not as well versed in these matters as he thought. Clearly, he'd been getting cocky about his growing body of 'people-ing skills.

Still, now that the idea of a date is in his head, he's actually somewhat keen on the idea, so he's disappointed.]

[ Damnit JJ! With a small groan she throws her head back and almost throws her phone across the room, but she needs that for work.

Instead she clutches it tightly in her hand while inwardly beating herself up for back peddling. ]

Would you be free for dinner tomorrow night? Yes, I was asking you out on a date I just… it’s been a while and I started to feel silly asking.

[Now he's got whiplash, but at least now things are heading in a pleasing direction. So much so that he'd nearly forgotten about his hunt. His prey would have to wait. This is the constant battle for him, between what part of him was most important. It's that conflict that led to so many problems.

But it seems it's a problem that he'd keep making.] I understand. I've never really been very good at these kinds of things.
Dinner tomorrow it is. I'll pick you up. I know a good place.
