Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...

[ Sam dives over the edge and folds the wings in before he even has time to react emotionally to what just happened. All he knows is there was the crack of a shot, the dull thud of a large projectile striking against vibranium, nothing unusual, nothing to worry about. Bucky blocks bullets like they're nothing.

But bullets have momentum, and Bucky was standing on the edge of the roof. One moment he is there, the next he's gone.

Falling.

Sam dives. He doesn't think about the mission he just abandoned, the bad guy they'd cornered who will now run free instead of going to the Raft. Doesn't think of breaking all protocol. What are they gonna do, hate him a little more for carrying the shield and failing to live up to standards not even Steve ever met?

None of it matters. Sam's world narrows to the shape of Bucky, falling, and the rapidly approaching concrete of the streets below.

They're freefalling, the wings folded flat to offer the least amount of air resistance possible, the thrusters of his jetpack howling as they help accelarate Sam beyond what gravity greedily grabs for. He's straining, suit HUD flashing warning signs about the kind of shit this maneuver is subjecting his body too, muscles screaming, organs clinging on for dear life, lungs empty and burning. Doesn't matter. Sam strains, reaches out his hand towards Bucky, towards Riley, towards Steve, towards Natasha, towards Bucky...

The moment he locks his grip around Bucky's outstretched hand, Sam knows there's not enough room between them and the street left to pull them into an upswing and land safely. Sam's flown enough dire rescue missions to know this.

He has two options. First: Fold the wings down and around so they hit the ground full speed, Bucky under Sam, taking the brunt of the fall with vibranium curling around him to try and minimize damage.

Second: Spread the wings, slow them down and accept that they will hit the ground, but less hard, but without a vibranium buffer.

Bucky's a super soldier. He can walk off injuries like that. But there's fear in the blue eyes Sam's gotten so familiar with. Bucky fell off a train in the Alps and hit the ground, and his life got worse from there.

So neither option works. A third option then. These things we do, that others may live. Sam isn't made for the fight, he's made for the rescue. He's not a weapon, but a shield. So he will shield Bucky from as much as he can.

The wings flare open wide, vibranium groaning and straining to break their fall, and Sam pulls, feels his shoulders screaming. Slows their fall and pulls Bucky close, tucks the man's face against his own neck - stabilize who you're rescuing, make sure they don't get hurt, protect them, rescue them. Spare Bucky the sight of the ground rushing up when Sam manages to flip them, turn them so he's underneath the super soldier. ]

I got you.

[ It's almost lost in the howling of the wind in their ears, but Sam's voice is pure relief.

He hits the ground first, breaking both their fall on asphalt.

It takes a long time for Sam to be released from the hospital. He's told, later, that it's touch and go for a long while. His body broke in ways he doesn't want to think about too closely. There's a part of him that knows he could have died, but Sam has never been one to bemoan that possibility in the face of saving someone. He dreams of all his dead loved ones falling, and he dreams of catching Bucky, over and over again.

They're not okay by the time they're back in Delacroix. Sam's still recovering, and he's worked with enough vets to know that something haunted lies in Bucky's eyes. Because Sam may have caught him, but he still fell. Sam knows the same haunted look lies in his own eyes.

He's not surprised to get up one night, shivering in the wake up a nightmare despite the Louisiana heat, and finds Bucky already awake in the kitchen. Their demons messing with both their sleep, then. ]

Buck.

[ Sam says it like there's any chance Bucky couldn't hear him enter the kitchen. It's habit - he knows Bucky's got super hearing, still makes sure not to startle him.

They both look like shit, dark shadows under their haunted gazes, and in Sam's case a patchwork quilt of slowly healing bruising across his dark skin. The dead of night is quiet, and Sam thinks perhaps this is where they start to heal, far away from close calls and hospital beds. ]

Rufus is in a bad mood.

Mostly because he had been kidnapped, taken prisoner, interrogated and all the nasty, exhausting things that come with it. He knows himself capable of enduring, giving to his captors only smug half-smiles and sarcastic remarks instead of any valuable information. Rufus isn't loyal to Shinra. He is Shinra, and would never do anything as pathetic as begging for his life, offering his company on a silver plate. He'll never be like the old man and that's not a promise, that's a warning.

And there's another thing, something his father lacked. He trusts the Turks and knows they'll find him and get him out of this rotten place, sooner than later.

They are surely taking their time, it worries him what could be happening out there. His company, his city and his men need him. So, when he hears gunshots outside, his mood lightens even when every part of his body aches.

[It's inevitable that training accidents are bound to happen; that was true in the old academy days five years ago and it's still true now. Things happen; people misjudge and misstep and make mistakes. Part of being a good instructor is having fast enough reflexes to deal with such things when they occur, and to anticipate that they will occur. It's important to know the capabilities of the students in question, and their limits.

Unfortunately, the other part of being a good instructor is appreciating one's own limits, just as much as that of the trainees. And between the war in the air and the never-ending bandit movements worrying away at everyone's sense of calm, it's no surprise that mistakes are going to happen more frequently than usual, especially to an instructor who forgets to pace herself.

It's not that she's been careless...exactly. It's just a combination of poor scheduling and a desire not to say no to her former students, and a slightly more robust perception of her own endurance than she'd proved to have in practice.

Next time, she'll know better. Felix alone is a workout in and of himself; Yuri needs to go first to ensure that her wits are as sharp as they can be when she faces him. Balthus is always more of a handful than he seems on the surface because his endurance in surprising even in the face of exhaustion. Ingrid is...well. Ingrid is Ingrid.

She tells herself she's just going to catch her breath a minute before making the walk back to the monastery proper. She just sits down, training sword propped against the bench she's leaning up against, and figures she'll close her eyes and breathe and let some of the heat of exertion cool away before she sets off.

When she reopens her eyes again, the sun has shifted dramatically in the sky, and the shadows are long and dark. With the adrenaline long since worn off, she's more conscious now of the aches in her body — and in several of them that have intensified rather than faded as she might otherwise have expected. She must've been injured in the course of the sparring, and simply didn't notice through the rush of it all.

She's certainly noticing now, when it's several hours past when she should've been back, and her ankles are aching emphatically enough that she's not altogether certain how easy it's going to be to try to walk back where she belongs.]

[ she's found him by accident, more or less. out doing errands, azalea had heard a scuffle too loud to ignore or write off as scrapping wild animals and knew she needed to investigate. it's foolish, maybe, but she knows how to protect herself and when her instincts tell her that someone might need help, she's obligated to try.

whatever the initial conflict was, most of the involved parties have left by the time azalea finds the scene, leaving only a battered and bloody little dog against the base of a tree. obviously injured by still breathing, she can see that much.

just deep enough into the woods to call the location out of the way, azalea wants to make it clear she's not trying to sneak up on the creature, deliberately walking through a particularly crunchy patch of fallen leaves on the ground to make noise from a distance. she stops while she's still more than an arm's reach from the pup, crouching to get a better look at them while she talks, her voice gentle. ]
