It's been over a year. It seems impossible, but it's a fact: Kyle crashed his rental car outside of Hårga around midsummer... which has come and gone again. It's a realisation that hits him suddenly when he happens to check a standard calendar and realises he's missed Yom Kippur. His mother would murder him, he thinks, and that's what sends him into a temporary panic.

He's been in Hårga over a year. He hasn't started law school. He hasn't gone home. After his broken leg had finally healed he'd felt so grateful for the help of the villagers - and they were so warm, so welcoming, so non-judgmental - that he'd offered to stay a while to pay them back. There were crops to harvest, after all, and some of the buildings needed repairing. He could help with those things. And so the days had bled into weeks, into months, a steady river of daily chores and meals. Calm, blessed routine where he never had to worry about what came next.
