In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (see: The Golden Compass Movie, His Dark Materials on HBO, the books), every person has a creature called a daemon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Daemons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).

Basic Daemon Facts:

• They take the shape of animals
• They can talk, no matter what their shape
• Children's daemons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
• Neither the person or the daemon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
• They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
• If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
• Being physically apart from one's daemon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
• Daemons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but daemons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's daemon without permission is a terrible violation.
• If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa

How it works:

Just design a daemon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a top-level, with your muse's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's daemons and let your daemons interact too.

[Emery's daemon took an unusually long time to settle, but roughly two years ago it finally settled into the form of an Erigone atra, a species of dwarf spider/money spider. It looks something like this. (CW: Spiders, naturally.)

The spider is named Ivory and it is very small, less than three millimetres in length, and difficult to spot- which can be very unsettling to people who don't know that Emery's daemon is simply too small to be easily seen, rather than actually absent.

Ivory is generally hiding behind Emery's ear, where it frequently murmurs comments that only Emery can hear.]

[Most people assume that one of Zepar's six housecats is his daemon, or even the bobcat that can sometimes be seen roaming the back yard. They're only partially wrong, Angels -especially the fallen- don't have daemons of their own, and tend to collect strays of whatever sort to make up for it.]

[Nile's daemon is Kilimanjaro, usually just called Kili, and he's a common potoo. Which means that sometimes he looks like a branch and sometimes he looks like a muppet and neither of them are quite sure how to act around the rest of the Guard and being so casual with each other's daemons.
Side-note: I theorize that sometimes their daemons change shape after a death, especially a rough one. Whether or not this has happened with Kili just depends on how far along things are.]

It's hard to miss the hip-height mass of shock-white fur that is Avalon, a borzoi who is steaily dancing just out of reach for Sinthia, the human following him. (He's moving her out of the biggest part of the crowd around them, because she will follow, and Sinthia getting nervous in large crowds is bad for everyone involved.) "Come back here," she manages, as he slides between two people and dodges around someone's lizard daemon, and stops in front of Eliot and Betty.

As does Sinthia a moment later, fingers sliding into her daemon's thick fur--half for reassurance, half to keep him from darting off again.

[ Silas' daemon is a parrot (more specifically, a lovebird) named Murgitroid, or sometimes Murgie for short. She still occasionally changes appearance, but she is always a parrot; it's only her size and feather colour that tends to change. She's very talkative, and can most often be found sitting on Silas' shoulder or, sometimes, the top of his head. She also likes to get him involved in situations he really rather wouldn't be involved in. ]

The fact that pararibulitis worked differently in Wendimoor than it did at home was the second thing she'd noticed, the first was that daemons worked differently there, too, given as how Lizardo, often just called Liz, had gone from being a sticky-footed house-gecko, to being an actual dragon the first time they arrived.

Not a large dragon, roughly the size of an owl, where he could still perch comfortably on her shoulder. What was especially amusing to her was that he was a different color every time they came to visit. Which wasn't as often as she'd promised herself would be, but traveling with the Rowdies was a wild kind of magic all its own and there wasn't always a body of water deep enough for her to make a stable connection back.

But she did visit whenever she could, mostly because the people of Bofuki Nepoo needed a witch, and without Wakti Wapnasi that fell to her.

The problem with traveling back and forth was that no matter how often she left by Wakti Wapnasi's scrying pool, she was never quite sure just what pond or lake or pool she was going to arrive in. Today that arrival was in the Dengdamor castle reflecting pool, which mostly made her laugh as the thing was barely a foot deep, but still enough to sit up out of like Dracula rising from his coffin, Lizardo just paddling in circles behind her, squawking and trying to breathe fire only to end up bubbling steam instead.

[Percy has a Russian Blue daemon named Invar. where he is sharp tongued and angry, she is quiet and chooses her words with care and quiet contemplation.

Invar has wounds on her body from experiments Anna Ripley conducted as she attempted to tear Percy from his daemon and any cleric looking at Percy's soul will see matching wounds there too.

They are very protective of each other and Invar is often the first person Percy will listen too when he is angry or upset.]

[Kieran's daemon is a sweet little white bunny named Prudence. Contrary to Kieran whose public persona is best described as Big Damn Hero, Prudence is shy and quiet, though very attentive- Kieran often relies on her to pick up on things he cannot due to Reasons.

She has a tendency to ride around in the pockets or in the hood of Kieran's robes, so her presence is very rarely noticeable due to her miniscule size, unless you happen to know Kieran and his daemon already, and know to be looking at his robes rather than elsewhere.]
