[Pfff! Hana had forgotten the whole point of this! Good grief!]

Yes! Of course! I just -- ahaha, I got a little distracted, um...

[Zen is thoroughly forgotten as Hana reaches for her sunhat full of little slips of paper.]

Why don't you pick this time? I can next. Or if the movie doesn't really work out.

[After all there are as many horror as romance movies in here and they might be too scary or too sad maybe?]

Very well, let us execute this plan!

[ Wearing a determined look, brow furrowed, Alice reaches into the hat. He was undeniably distracted himself, and he could gladly sit back to talk to Hana all evening, discussing any topic that comes to mind, but he's distracted no longer! Their movie date night will begin in earnest!

Alice's fingers sift through the slips of paper, finally seizing one between them. Fishing it out, he unfolds it, reads the movie title written there, and swallows, turning the paper around for Hana with sudden trepidation.

He did say that horror films could suit their purpose as well as other genres, but this might be too creepy! ]

"Ring"... I've heard that this is quite the frightening film... So we can switch to yours instead, if we discover that such scary content ruins the mood!

[ How will they survive the night, otherwise?! In a blanket fort together...? ]

[Hana's gaze skips down to the piece of paper and she makes a little 'oh' sound.]

I had actually heard of that one before I came to Japan! I wonder if it really is as frightening as they say.

[And judging by the online streaming options for this one there were a ton of sequels.

Hana fishes around in the hat just to be a little more random and comes out with one that seems to perk up her brows as she reads it.]

Oh! I heard this one was an anime too, I think?

[She turns to slip of paper towards Alice.]

"Your Lie in April". Do you know about it?

[ Something about this particular movie title rings a bell, and Alice studies the piece of paper in Hana's hand, contemplative. Abruptly, he draws himself up straighter, answering her question with a nod. ]

Ah! I haven't seen it, but I've heard of it! The main characters are musicians... I believe one of them is a pianist. It's supposed to be rather heart-wrenching...

[ Wasn't the pianist a prodigy, even? That could be why he and Reko have steered clear of watching this film — aspects of it either hit too close to home, or the music might fall short of meeting their standards. On the other hand, it's on Hana's list, and it can't be nothing more than pure chance that she drew it out of the hat from a sizeable selection of options. ]

It has my vote, if you wish to experience it together!

[Ah, heart-wrenching. Hana seems to recall that being mentioned in the reviews she read.

Turning the paper back towards herself she considers a moment and then gives a firm, decisive nod.]

Alright then, how about this -- we'll start with the one you chose, switch to this if it gets to be too much and then maybe a comedy if this gets to be too much.

[And even though she's the one who thought up this chain of movie skipping she can't help but laugh.]

I think we're going to end up feeling a lot of emotions tonight.

[She tucks the hat out of the way so she can plop down on the couch itself. Hana leaves a space near the armrest open, seemingly remembering their dinner and Alice's uncomfortable posture being caught between her and Reko. Maybe he didn't like being in the middle? Or not having an arm rest?]

It seems our path is decided, and our hearts are ready! We've mentally prepared ourselves for every possibility!

[ Be it fear or sorrow or amusement, they have an idea of what to expect, and they can support each other through it! Matching Hana's nodding, Alice hovers nearby, facing the couch, until looming over it begins to look absurd, delaying their plans for the evening. Then he eyes her position on said couch, reminded of their sharing Reko's couch — and those moments of Hana leaning against him there. Foggier than that is the more recent series of events that ended in Hana's tipsy fascination with his hair...

Should he sit directly beside her? Propose that they hold hands in preparation for spooky scenes?

Taking a seat where Hana has reserved a spot for him, so to speak, Alice leans back against the couch this time, arms placed out of Hana's way to let her make use of him as a pillow — if she'd like to try it properly! Rather than his arm alone, which he imagines he could wrap around her freely now, perhaps it would be more comfortable for her to rest against his chest? ]

[For a moment Hana is concentrated on scrolling through the list of movies she's saved. She was determined to have everything ready and had meticulously went through the list of movies she had put in the hat to make sure they were ready. Finding the Ring took a moment, then selecting it another.

In the meantime it seems Hana sort of... forgets to be entirely awkward? It wasn't odd when she ended up focusing on something and with Alice settling down in such a ready position it's no shock that after he's stopped shifting around Hana just sort of instantly leans his way. It's not until her head plops against his chest that she hits select and the stream starts buffering it's way into loading that she comes back to reality itself.]

There we go, just give it a minute.

[... Oh! She's already leaned in, hasn't she. Was that a little anti-climactic?

Hana cranes her head back now, looking up at Alice's face. Even sitting there's enough of a difference that he could easily settle his chin atop her head if he really wanted to.]

This isn't uncomfortable, is it?

[ Hana predicted a night filled with an entire spectrum of emotions, but right now, Alice feels nothing but a giddy thrill and the pounding of his heartbeat, movies forgotten. Hana tilts her head back against his chest, her upturned face mere inches from his own, and he tips his chin downward to meet her gaze. She's only peering up at him, but even this is somehow so endearing that another ridiculously besotted smile spreads across his lips. ]

It's not uncomfortable in the least...! On the contrary...

[ Without Kuro guarding Hana, they're leaned against each other quite comfortably. After a moment's deliberation, Alice chances a more daring gesture, lowering one arm from the back of the couch, the other from the armrest near him, slipping both loosely around Hana's waist.

This is nice, isn't it? Just sitting down together like this? ]

And you? How do you find it?

[A daring gesture indeed! Alice's smile warms her up in an instant, rousing up butterflies of pleasure rather than awkwardness. If he's pleased enough for that look then Hana is pleased as well.

She does direct her gaze down when his arms circle round her. She had thought something like this would be awkward but now in the moment it's more thrilling than anything else. She doesn't feel shy or embarrassed about it in a thorough surprise to her. With his arms loosely round her and his chest behind her it's --]

It's very comforting.

[She brings her hands to rest lightly against the arms looped round her waist, not pushing or pulling but simply touching. She had been hugged before of course but this was less hug than the ever-illusive cuddling, yes?]

[ Comforting is a gratifying way to describe it, and Hana's hands on Alice's forearms are just as encouraging. This feels natural; Hana's slight frame, wrapped in his hold, fits against him so neatly. For a moment, Alice marvels at it, thoroughly distracted from the stream starting on the screen in front of them.

He'll be quiet for it soon. ]

Then your verdict is that I am an excellent pillow?

[ They joked about it early on, but this time, they're less likely to grow flustered over it! Probably. There's no risk of any inconvenient interruptions, either — he's made sure to eat enough beforehand to tide him over and forestall anything like the incident with Kuro. ]

[Hana is a devious woman. She might never have seen any of the movies she's picked out but doubly she doesn't mind missing them altogether either. Poor Alice has fallen for a ruse, been thoroughly duped! This was never about the movies at all! It was all about Alice's possibilities as a pillow.

And a very obvious excuse to cuddle up but that did involve him being pillow-like perhaps?

Hana laughs brightly at that and then makes something of a show of wiggling against his chest like one would do when snuggling down into a fluffed-up pillow.]

Mmm, I think so. I'd definitely rate your snuggability high!

[ Some tiny part of Alice faintly considers that he's definitely gazing at Hana like a lovestruck romcom character. Much like preparing an actual hat for their movie choices, it's too charming for words that she conducts her assessment of his pillow-esque qualities as if she's completely serious about it. His chest is obviously rather firm compared to a pillow, but it does appear to make for a good surface to lean against!

Very gently, his arms give Hana's slender waist a light squeeze, not quite fluffing a pillow of his own. She's soft and warm, her body a pleasant weight pressed to his. They don't even need to pretend that they're holding each other because of a horror film's terrifying content! ]

We match, in that case! You're clearly eligible to receive many snuggability points yourself. At least ninety!

[ Or even more, but he supposes they've only just begun their cuddling... ]

[Far be it from Hana to complain about his chest, not after ogling him once before. She's quickly gaining an appreciation of how solid he is here.]

A whole ninety! How lucky!

[Naturally this is when the movie slides from the credits to crashing into the first scene -- two girls watching television, one telling the other about a horror story involving a creepy television channel.]

[ Everything is progressing naturally, so it makes sense to relax and go with the flow, allowing the evening to take them wherever it will. For now, simply sitting close, squished against each other on the couch, feels wonderfully right. Alice falls silent for the film, settling. Before long, his eyes go wider and wider, fixed on the stream.

They aren't far into the movie, but already, a few of these early scenes prove disturbing enough. The video — those images and sounds... The victims.

Slowly, Alice's arms tighten around Hana just a little more. Since he can't really hide behind her, given that attempting it would be very obvious, requiring him to slide downward into an awkward position, he ends up with his chin resting against the top of Hana's head.

Inadvertent seated spooning isn't an unpleasant outcome, at least. ]

[To be fair the Hana herself jumps several times -- the jumpscares are pretty effective even when mild! The thought of a videotape curse though...]

Technology really had progressed quickly!

[There are wall-mounted phones not to mention the whole idea of videotapes.]

I wonder if you would have to copy DVDs now... ah, even that seems old-fashioned though...

[This is around when she notes Alice's tightening hold and she reflexively pats his arm. He has his chin atop her head so she can't really glance up at him as much as she can ask:]

Are you alright?

DVDs...?

[ Hana's musings, coupled with her hand patting Alice's arm, pull him back to the safety of the couch, freeing him from the grip that the film's unsettling scenes have on him. Alice blinks, sitting up to study Hana from above, not unlike waking up disoriented. A moment later, he has to laugh. ]

Your rational observations are our shield! You're right... The technology is behind the times now, isn't it? Perhaps a modern curse would spread through online videos and auto-play settings?

[ That would be a scary surprise, if one were to encounter the video in the middle of unsuspecting browsing... Even so, considering it aloud together counteracts the tense atmosphere, and Alice's embrace doesn't threaten to become a death grip on Hana. ]

Ah, like an ad?

[Now Hana laughs too.]

Those are already bad enough!

[She's glad though that her rational thought had somewhat comforted him. There is a small part of her that finds the tightened grip nice, though the tension just radiating off of the poor guy does a lot to contradict that.

They've made it a third of the way through and frankly Hana's far less invested in the horror on screen than the man behind her. Ah, what a thing to admit to herself! She's just as bad as people who take their dates to horror movies just to have the chance to comfort them ... ah, isn't that exactly what she's doing here?

Now that Alice is studying her from above she flicks her gaze upward, viewing him through the drape of her bangs.]

We can switch to the other movie if you like.

Indeed... Intrusive online advertising is the true curse...

[ Hana's amusement does wonders to bolster Alice's heart further — there's nothing truly frightening at all, is there? Together, they can make it all the way through any movie, knowing that nothing can emerge from a TV screen to harm them! Should they surrender and switch to the next movie on the list, then? The scary content hasn't ruined the mood after all, somehow helpful instead.

It does occur to Alice that Hana is being considerate, offering him a means of escape. ]

Well, are you curious about the rest of this one? I'm not opposed to finding out how it ends — I wonder whether they'll succeed in laying the vengeful spirit to rest? Though I'm not against feeling other emotions, either...

[ Reasonably relaxed thanks to their conversation, Alice reaches out without thinking, brushing Hana's bangs out of her eyes. ]

[The bang brushing doesn't strike Hana for a moment. She's not precisely surprised at Alice's willingness to finish out the movie given how much he seems to consider other's needs and all. He actually sounds interested though if only a little and that's rather charming really.

Once her view of him clears some she's more surprised at herself for only now noting his actions. There's a pleasant warmth with the realization, a little squeeze of her heart that may make her cheeks color some but she looks thoroughly pleased with it.]

I admit, I am curious. This woman must have gone through a lot to be so angry!

[It's an odd topic to be talking so cheerfully about but Alice is terribly cute and she can't help it.]

Then we shall continue until we have answers...

[ And yet, even as he says this, fully intending to sit through the rest of the movie, Alice is far too preoccupied with looking exclusively at Hana. His hand lingers in place, fingertips resting lightly against the strands of hair they've smoothed to one side. He can see the color in Hana's cheeks, the encouragement in her expression, and a smile tugs the corners of his mouth upward again.

Even though they've decided to keep watching the film, he does nothing but stroke that lock of Hana's hair caught between his fingers. ]

Hana, I...

[ He ought to come clean! ]

You should know, I keep thinking about things that don't have anything to do with the movie at all...

[Hana's brows rise a little at his admission. They have been quite outright and honest with each other lately so it's not exactly shocking. She looks mildly surprised but maybe it's more the heat in her cheeks that grows than real surprise. It does give her heart a little flutter after all!

Of course the flush in her cheeks is also thoroughly of her own doing because, well... truth for truth, yes? Alice fiddles with that lock of her hair and she admits just a hint sheepishly as she looks off to one side for a moment.]

Well... the movies are sort of an excuse.

[Ah, poor guy. Was she legitimately cheating him out of movies here?]

[ Hana looks so guilty all of a sudden, breaking eye contact like that, when she hasn't done anything wrong. Her confession only puts Alice at ease — of course they want to spend time together as they did before they acknowledged their feelings and decided to give their meet-ups a label, but they're free to act on those feelings now, aren't they?

The moment seems perfect. ]

Well then... Perhaps we should pause it for now? If we intend to take advantage of that excuse...?

[ Once they've given in, they'll surely have an easier time focusing on watching any film they like! ]

It was a brilliant idea!

[Oh, this is a surprise. Hana glances back up still at least somewhat sheepish but far less now that he's made his suggestion. It's nice to know she's not depriving him of anything here.

Before the poor guy even gets the very nice compliment she's even managed to find the controller and pause it just as suggested. Just boom, it's done and it's only after it's done that she seems to even note that she's done it, first by flicking her gaze to said paused screen and then back up to him.

She can't feel sheepish now. With a barely contained huff of laughter she plops the back of her head against his chest.]

It was definitely a good enough excuse. I sort of see why it's such a common one now.

[Because she did sort of end up at the goal of cuddling up to him. Maybe tropes are tropes for a reason sometimes!]

I truly didn't suspect a thing! How cunning...

[ In a good way, nothing nefarious! Cozily watching movies together has let them commence cuddling without overthinking anything, after all, and they were able to confide in each other just as easily. From here, now that the film is paused, they won't have to worry about holding back!

It actually feels like an abrupt loss, that handful of seconds of Hana sitting up to pick up the controller, and it subsides only when she reclaims her spot nestled against Alice. Less hesitant, he curls both arms around her waist again, back to peering down at her in anticipation.

It's so quiet, with the movie's background noise silenced, and in that stillness, his heartbeat must be much too loud, thumping away near Hana's ears. Should he boldly lean in the rest of the way from this angle? ]

I suppose... the time has come to assess our pillow-like properties further...?

[... Oh. Well then. Hana lefts her head shift, coming now to rest her cheek against Alice's chest so she can more properly look up at him from an angle versus canting her head backwards.

Hana has never been a good flirt. Deliberately trying was no good with her and the amount of practice she had had at it was laughable. Right now though his arms curled around around her it seems so natural to reach for his hands with both of her own, following the line of one of his index fingers softly as she replies.]

Mm, it couldn't hurt. How do you think we should do that?

[Her tone sounds innocent enough certainly but she's equally looking up at him with an interesting look. It's hard to pin down certainly but it's warm and like she's got at least one or two good ideas of what sort of pillow he would make.]
