[The past few weeks have been A Lot for Carlos. Getting away from his mother, going to Auradon, finding out that dogs are actually pretty nice, it's all been almost overwhelming.

There are two things that have kept him grounded, however, and kept him out and not hidden under a blanket in his bedroom. First, classes. He's always been a nerd, always loved to learn and to read, and now he has access to a huge library, where he can read anything he wants. Sure, some of the classes are a bit... something, but he's learning and he's happy.

The second thing that's been good is Evie. He's not entirely sure that he would have been able to do this if she hadn't been there as well. Sure, he likes Jay, and now that he's off the Isle, he's becoming less of a jerk, and Mal is... Mal. They're his family, and he's glad to have them. Evie, though... there's something there that he can't put his finger on. Even if he doesn't figure it out, he's just glad she's there.

He's in the library at the moment, doing some homework. Completely not a surprise.]

[While the adjustment to Auradon has been difficult, Evie absolutely adores the life that's shaping up for her off of the Isle. THE Prince, Ben, is super sweet to them all, even if his girlfriend needs a serious attitude adjustment. The second most-eligible prince is dropping hints that he has a thing for her, even if the way he's showing his affection is a little strange. The room she shares with Mal is fit for a princess. The air is clean, the food is fresh, the fabric - the fabric! - is new and intact. And, she has access to a sewing machine, courtesy of the home economics teacher and the policy that allows students to borrow machines for projects. She's lost count of the number of outfits she's made everyone in her crew, especially since she's tucked a few away as presents for the holidays.

The stress mostly comes from Goodness class - she gets why they're taking it, but it's so boring she can't bring herself to pay attention half the time, Mr. Deeley's determination to catch her out at something since she showed him up in Chemistry when he'd meant to embarrass her, and Mal going on about the need to come up with plans to get the wand. Evie's starting to wonder if they can't all just... not get the wand. They're out, they're free from their parents' influence, and this place is just so amazing! She knows what her mom and the others will do to it. They've only been plotting for pretty much the entire time they've been trapped.

Some of the stress also comes from the double load of homework she's been doing. Chad Charming is a busy prince, so of course he doesn't have time for something as trivial to him as homework. But if she takes care of it, it's one less thing on his schedule, and one more opportunity for him to have some free time for her. His smiling face is what keeps her going on the double homework. That light, dreamy look he gives her, and the way he leans close to whisper a thank you in her ear when she hands him his papers under the bleachers....

Once they figure out the love spell for Mal to give Ben, she'll make her move. Until then, she's biding her time, putting in the work to show she really would be the perfect girlfriend. The only trouble is that she can't work in her dorm room any more. After both Mal and Lonnie made a fuss about her doing a simple favor, she decided she didn't need people fussing at her. So she's come to the library for some peace and quiet. She'll feel more productive in the library, anyway. All those books just begging to be read.

She grins when she catches sight of Carlos at an otherwise empty table, working on his own homework. Carlos will understand. He's so good at school, and he loves learning things even more than she does. And he's always had her back, looked out for her on the Isle when she was trapped in her tower for all those years. She heads toward his table and puts her backpack down carefully - just enough noise so she doesn't startle him, but not so silent that he won't notice her. When he looks up, she grabs the back of the chair opposite him.]

[Carlos has noticed Evie spending time with Chad, and he's not sure what to think about it. It's obvious that she's always been told that she needs to find a prince, but is this prince really the one? In Carlos' not so humble opinion, Chad's a bit of a wet blanket, and he's pretty sure that he's not really all that nice.

However, if that's who Evie wants, Carlos will have to live with it. It's not like he has any claim on her, right? Something in his emotions just feels wrong, but he doesn't really know what to do with it.

When she comes up to the table, he grins right back at her and nods.]

It is now! Come join me.

[Evie gives him a bright smile as she slides into the chair. Before she reaches for her bag, however, she lets her head drop to the table in an exaggerated, silent 'ugh'.]

You are a literal life-saver, letting me sit here. I need to be around someone I can trust won't get annoyed at me while I work.

[She looks up at Carlos, and her expression shifts to one full of fondness. She can't remember him ever being annoyed at her, nor she at him. Okay, maybe when he let Mal lock her in his mom's closet, but she understands now how crew initiation works, and she's forgiven him a hundred times over for that one incident. Plus, looking back on it, that was what he had to deal with every single day, and he did come and rescue her against Mal's orders.

Mal. The reason she can't work in her own room. She opens her bag and hauls out her chemistry book and two folders, one a deep red, and one a powder blue. In the blue folder, in addition to the assignment, there's a handwriting sample clipped to the pocket. She opens her book to the assigned pages, and pulls out her own worksheet first.]

You'd think, being VKs, that Mal wouldn't get upset that I'm helping someone cheat.

[Her words are barely a whisper - sound carries in a library after all. But she knows Carlos will hear her.]

[He's still horrified about her getting locked in the fur closet. As soon as she was in there, he booked it through the back door to make sure that she wouldn't get hurt. He's been beating himself up for it for years. He's not proud of how much he allowed Mal to push him around, and he's only now starting to get the confidence to stand up to other people.

An odd look crosses his face as he notices the two folders. It's obvious what she's doing, and... he's not worried about the cheating, but the implications of it. If Chad's having Evie do his homework, he probably doesn't really care about her. He had plenty of people do it to him back on the Isle. None of them actually gave a crap.

Taking a breath, he scoots his chair a bit closer to her so they can talk quietly.]

Is this why you've been so tired lately? How much other homework have you been doing?

[It's obvious that he's worried about her.]

[She catches the look, but when he doesn't say anything right away, she relaxes a little. She knew he'd understand. She scans through the first problem on her worksheet, and starts in on it when he scoots his chair closer.

Oh. Oh, that's unexpected, and really sweet. Not judgy, not like Mal and Lonnie, but concerned. She gives Carlos a reassuring smile.]

Just Chad's. I wouldn't do this for anyone else, except for you guys, if you needed me to. It's just taken a while to get used to, that's all. I don't mind the work. We're not in all the same classes, so some of it takes me longer, but I'm learning a lot by doing this. And it makes his life a lot less stressful.

[She reaches for Carlos's hand to give it a reassuring squeeze.]

Chad says he'll have time to spend with me if I can clear up some of his workload during Tourney season. We meet at the bleachers twice a day already, to exchange folders.

[A tiny bit of an electric feeling goes through him as she takes his hand. He's not sure what this means, and he files this away to think about later. Now, there's more that he's concerned about. Chad is not so busy with Tourney that he couldn't do his own homework.

However, Carlos is trying to be kind and not just grump about Evie being taken advantage of by Chad. It'll be better if she realizes it. Taking a breath, he looks over at her, expression still concerned.]

So, he said that he was so busy with Tourney, he can't do his homework? Huh. I don't think Jay or Ben are having problems, and I'm not.

[Then again, Carlos De Vil is an outlier and should not be counted.]

[She nods, though wonders why he feels the need to make the comparison. She squeezes his hand again.]

Carlos, everything comes so naturally to you academically. You're super-smart, so of course you're not having trouble keeping up with both things. And Ben... he's been scheduled within an inch of his life probably every day since he was a kid, since he's going to become king soon. And he'll have to give up sports when he does, because he won't be able to keep up with school, sports, and being king. Chad's got a lot going on. And he says I'm sweet and smart enough to do this for him.

[She turns in her chair so she's facing Carlos and takes his other hand as well.]

You know my mom's counting on me to find a prince. And Chad seems like the whole package. He even appreciates that I'm smart! He's the only boy besides you to ever tell me I'm smart like it's a good thing.

[Just saying that makes her blush. No one besides Carlos has ever liked her for her brain, just her looks. When Chad tells her she's smart, it feels almost as good as when Carlos tells her.]

I know you're worried that I'm over extending myself, and I really, really appreciate it. You get me better than anyone else, Carlos. Maybe you could help me figure out a better way to organize my time so I'm not staying up so late?

[That doesn't explain why Jay's not having problems, Carlos thinks, but he doesn't say anything. Not now.

He's even more sure that Chad is taking advantage of Evie, and for just a moment, he wishes he could lock him in his mother's fur closet, but the thought passes quickly, and he focuses more on what's going on now.]

I am worried, Evie. You have dreams that have nothing to do with princes, and I'm afraid that's going to get lost. If you want help, though, I'll always help you. What're you working on now?

[If she's determined to do this, Carlos will be with her every step of it. He's always believed that she could be amazing if she let herself, so perhaps he can help her see that for herself.]
