THE HAUNTED FOREST MEME

Fairy tales, young adult novels, and tourist traps all speak of the horrors that can be found inside a forest: ghosts, goblins, witches, werewolves, and more. The particulars of these stories might differ due to culture and time period, but they all remind us of the impossible and tap into our deepest and most basic fears. Some of them even have a happy ending.

What will you encounter, once you cross that tree line? Will you come out alive? If you are curious, you should check out some of real life “haunted forests”.

WARNING: Some of the prompts below totally belong in a horror movie and might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Please be sure to plot ahead for these!

1. GHOSTS » It is a known fact that only ten percent of ghosts are friendly, five percent are under curses, and the rest of them just want to kill you.

2. THE EVIL WITCH » Did you learn nothing from Hansel and Gretel? Do not eat the house!

3. A SIMPLE TRAVELER » You knew this forest was haunted. The map and villagers all warned you. You just asked for trouble and have found it.

4. WEIRD NOISE » For the last time, we get that you are hearing noises. The forest just makes noises, okay? It doesn’t mean something is there! Right?

5. FAIRY HELPER » Congrats, you met one of the nicer mythical creatures! While a bit annoying, at least this being is not set on killing you!

6. BATTLE » Be it a fight that started in the forest or somehow went into it, you might have more to worry about than who you were fighting originally.

7. THE MAZE » This is the worst. You turn here, make another turn there, and find yourself back at the beginning of a maze. Can you ever get out?

8. TALKING ANIMALS » Be sure to be polite—animals are fickle and could send you in the wrong direction.

9. BIG BAD WOLF » A classic cliché, you have run across someone who seems nice. Too nice. Just what is their end game here?

10. STRANGE SIGHTS » You cannot resist a good mystery—and when it comes to that, the forest is full of them! Come on, grab your mystery caps!

11. FAIR FOLK » These beings are known for their love for pranks. Have they turned your head into that of a donkey, or is someone just egging you?

12. BAD VACATION » On your online review, you are going to make sure to mention the broken toilet and the serial killer who was not taking a vacation.

13, A HIKING TRIP » Exercise and fresh air are lovely things, but maybe you should have chosen a different forest. The last 50 hikers have all died here.

14. THE QUEST » Through sleet and rain and shine, you must complete whatever your quest is. Rescue a damsel? Find a cure? Slay a dragon? Good luck.

15. UNWANTED VISITOR » When a trigger-happy hermit or grumpy dragon kills you, don’t say we didn’t warn you! There were literally dozens of signs.

16. A UNICORN » Oh my gosh oh my gosh you found a unicorn quick take a picture!

17. THE CASTLE » Many tales speak of castles that change locations or disappear with the sunrise. Can you break the curse or will you get trapped too?

18. THE NICE WITCH » Not all witches are evil! This one actually helps people on their quests from time to time … for a price. Are you willing to give it?

19. RAIN » You are cold, lost, and hungry, and now it’s raining?! Ugh!

20. HUNTING » Whether for food or for a dangerous criminal, you gear up and decide to go into the woods. Beware, this is no nice place.

21. THE OLD MAN » Look, we told you to ignore this guy. He might seem nice, but any advice or “magical items” he gives will not help you.

22. BAD LUCK » The map was outdated. The car got a flat tire. The boats have holes in them. A simple camping trip is now an utter comedic nightmare.

23. FLOWER GATHERING » What a lovely pastime! Are you picking flowers to woo a crush or cheer up a friend? Hold on. Where did the path home go?

24. SNOW» Okay, so saying, “At least it’s not snowing” is new.

25. THE HERO » Okay, fine, so you don’t believe in legends and refuse to heed the warning signs. Be prepared for all that you will face, foolish warrior!

26. THE HUNTED » As a last resort, you have gone to the woods to escape something that is pursuing you. Hopefully you will survive.

27. MORE BAD LUCK » This time, the whole forest seems to be out to get you: poison ivy, a squirrel sending mountain lions on you, and a rude llama.

28. RANDOM » Is there a trope or scenario that we forgot? Want to roll again? Go right ahead.

The Doctor sighed loudly and ended the call with a little more force than necessary, muttering in annoyance under his breath.

It had been several weeks since he had last seen John, at least going by his own personal timeline. In that time he had managed to pick up Tamsin and was still in the process of testing her out in different environments. He wasn't sure if she was a proper fit for the TARDIS yet, but she was starting to grow on him. That, and he needed someone with him in the TARDIS. He had spent too long alone after Lucie left him. The times he had spent dropping in on John Constantine somehow just weren't the same.

Honestly, he hadn't even fully checked on exactly when and where he and Tamsin had landed. This entire thing was exactly the sort of thing he might have expected to find John right in the middle of. Maybe he was deliberately avoiding finding out exactly when he was. He still wasn't sure if he was ready yet to see John again. Over the last several weeks he had been throwing himself into one distraction after another. He'd been careful not to cut contact altogether with John, but it had been sparse. Even more sparse since he had picked up Tamsin.

Tamsin and the Doctor had landed earlier that day, in the middle of a Welsh village that seemed to have more sheep than people. It had been meant as a small respite after their latest adventure, even though Tamsin had insisted she didn't need any sort of cooperation. Apparently, the TARDIS had listened to her more than to him, and they soon found that the local populace was under some form of mind control. One minute they were going about their daily lives, and the next they were all laser-focused on the construction of some strange... well, device wasn't quite the word. As far as the Doctor could tell, the materials weren't extraterrestrial, the technology wasn't too far ahead for the time, but he hadn't been able to suss out the purpose of whatever they were building. Worse yet, he couldn't even find the source of the mind control.

And then, after exactly 24 minutes, the spell would end and they would go back about their lives. No one seemed to acknowledge, or even see the strange thing being constructed in the village center. So far this had happened five times, with no discernable pattern between each happening. Any time he or Tamsin tried to ask anyone, it was as though they suddenly couldn't hear them.

He had been so sure that he would be able to find a clue in the nearby wood. So far all he'd found was a long-abandoned, half-delipidated community center. The small building was so overgrown with vines and weeds that you could hardly make out what it was ever meant to be. But other than that, he had found nothing in the two hours he had been searching and following what he had thought were clues.

And, yes. He was lost and he was alone. In the woods. In the middle of the night.


Sometimes he hated it when Tamsin was right.

Basically going with Alucard's spooky castle in the middle of an equally spooky forest just outside of town (huh, getting real Beauty and the Beast vibes from that). I don't mind if it's in 1400s or beyond Wallachia or wherever else, just whatever works. I guess this is a combo of 3, 15, and 26? ]]

It was just her luck. Cursed from the day she was born, and that last village was no different.

She felt her heart pounding in her throat, her lungs burning and desperate for air as she finally slowed down, managing to shove an old rusted gate closed behind her. Sweat cooled too quickly on her brow as she looked back, seeing the mass of light stop, and unintelligible murmurs began. It had been her own fault, really -- she had trusted that her magic was subtle enough to be unnoticeable, but when one saw her, another heard, and the news spread like the fire the villagers carried with them. They yelled horrible things, called her witch, demon, unnatural, and though she wanted to live in peace it wasn't good enough that she had no intent for harm. It had been sunset when she began running for her life, and with the last of the sun's light hidden behind foliage and cloud-cover, it was close to pitch-black save for the moonlight that barely made it through the dark blanket above.

The light began to fade, the villagers walking away, keeping their distance from her then. The girl didn't understand why, but it had her collapsing to her knees behind the gate, shaky breaths becoming steady and quiet as she realized that the chase was over. The maiden, cloaked and short-statured, looked to the castle before her. She hadn't heard anything nice about it, that there was a creature inside, that many a person had arrived never returned from there, that coming to this place was certain death. In a world where vampires, demons, witches, the walking dead, and other such creatures existed, though? Even ordinary humans could be the incarnation of terrifying death.

It was a few minutes for her to recover enough to get back to her feet, and hesitantly she began to approach the castle. It looked... Dreadful, imposing, but then again she hadn't lived in anything larger than a cottage before. Still, chances were it would be at least a place to rest, safe from the weather and a great many other things if one wasn't to believe the rumours about the supposed monster living there.

Without pardon, she pulled one of the large and heavy handles, opening it and expecting to see close to nothing, save perhaps for dusted walls and worthless abandoned trinkets. Like it or not, whether this castle was truly dangerous or not, it was a better risk than the certain deaths that awaited her in the forest or the village.

What she hadn't expected was for the castle to have an absence of scent, at least at first. What light that came in showed little, but what she could see was... Clean. Was there really something there?

Curious.

Perhaps it was unwise, perhaps it was foolhardy, but the desire to know spurred her beyond caution, and she called out, "Is there someone there? I... I seek one night's shelter, if there is."

Maybe it shouldn't have, but something about this was making her nervous -- if only because she didn't know if she expected an answer or not. Or who that answer may come from, if anyone.

it really didn’t matter what names people came up with for him. many seemed to happen in cycles: one would fall out of favor, and another would surface. he was neither troll nor gatekeeper of the forest, nor did he maintain magical capabilities.

no, that wasn’t true, he told himself. he’d maintained the burden of endless existence, and he’d finally decided to play with what that meant for him. he toyed with death, he flirted with the idea of giving all of himself to end a blight on the world, but of course he held no such power. nothing came of it.

but he could continue to keep an old, broken home half taken back by the woods, and he could continue to make anonymous donations of blood to hospitals, and he could play with the old programming of an abandoned afterlife.

an abandoned, forgotten old soul could do that much, endlessly, forever.

in the darkness of night, a redheaded boy could be seen carrying several packages of frank red fluid — blood.
