He doesn't stick around after snagging clothes out of the back of the vehicle. Money will find its way to the man he's stolen from when next he has a job. Right now, the rags he's wearing are all he has. He doesn't regret the loss of employment given the circumstance, the lives saved. The lives of the oil rig workers were far more important. He would make the same decision again in a heartbeat. Donning drier garments, he begins to walk, not bothering to steer his feet in any particular direction.

Twenty-four hours and many miles later, he finds himself still along the coastline. Another ship won't be possible for awhile, he thinks. News travels fast among sailors. The oil rig will be on everyone's minds for weeks, along with the greenhorn who disappeared. It leaves him at a crossroads, one he's been at before. One he's becoming accustom to. He's lost track of how many times he's started over since leaving the farmhouse. The searching seems endless and more often than not, pointless.

He sits himself down on an empty bench by the beach and casts his gaze out over the waves. Everything is put in its place by the setting of the sun.

1a.

[ The church sounds huge, the echo of her dragging, hesitant footsteps travel far and die out slow. She is moving down the aisle by holding onto the end board of each pew with one hand, feeling her way forward. There is a small flight of stairs near the altar, she knows, because the church is huge, but familiar at this point. Counting in her head, she can calculate how far from the altar she is currently located, the altarpiece nothing but white noise and a grey outline before her eyes. Shadows. Darkness. Everything has been reduced to shadow and darkness, maybe she should be angry about that, but she isn't. She has memories of vision. Color. She makes new memories in touch.

Seating herself on the nearest chair in front of the altar, Lilith looks ahead, into the shadows, into the darkness. By the faint sound of their breathing, the rustle of clothes as they shift, she can tell someone is sitting not far from her. United in devotion, she thinks and after a moment's quiet consideration opens her mouth to say: ]

2a.

[ The sudden downpour had surprised them both, the otherwise gentle spring afternoon turning slightly chilly, slightly damp from one moment to the next. Lilith is in too little clothes, just a thin dress, she'd been so optimistic this morning, so as they'd halted beneath the vendor's awning to wait for the rain to stop, Lilith staring out at a wall of falling droplets she couldn't see, her companion had offered her their jacket.

It'll soon stop, she'd told them, for some reason unwilling to accept the help. Everything will soon stop, she'd thought, your jacket won't save me. However, as she'd coughed not soon after, rubbing her bare arms, the other person had insisted and she wasn't going to put up a fight. With a small nod of her head, a smile, she took the jacket, wrapped it around her shoulders.

The rain has stopped now, she can hear, only infrequent tapping of a lone raindrop here and there. Quickly, she reaches for the jacket around her shoulders, slides the heavy fabric off and holds it out for her kind helper. ]

[ She is standing at the same street corner as always, although the other girls steal each other's spots gladly, no one ever steals hers. They are not a family, Lilith and the other street walkers, but they are the closest she has, now. She treasures them and in their own roundabout, rough way, they treasure her, too, like they would a little sister.

The outline of her street corner is something she knows by heart, she knows how many steps will take her to the nearby back alley or, in the other direction, to the motel. She recognizes the familiar sounds, can tell footfalls apart and picks out newcomers easily. She has a home here. Some kind of home.

Traffic today has been sparse and the sun is baking down from above, she can feel its heat against her shoulders where they're bare and thin. Lilith listens for anyone, but no one comes. After a while, she stops listening and starts moving instead, patterns of movement that are as familiar to her as the way she fills her lungs. She marks each step, dances blindly, frappé and fondu. She forgets how she must look, in her provocative outfit, naked legs, high heels. There's music at the back of her mind that no one else hears, Abaddon talking her through the choreography.

Had she listened, she'd have heard them approaching. As it is, she's unaware of anyone watching her. ]

[ The church is still cold at the break of dawn, but there’s a window facing east by the alter that brings a ray of warm sunlight down the wooden pews. Constance has been sitting here so long now that the light has shifted from being barely a slit to encompassing almost half of her row. She feels the warmth on her face and hates it; it’s a reminder of a vivid, bitter memory that, right now, is all she can think about.

She shifts back into the shadows, hoping it will help. It does, in a way, but - now she just doesn’t know what to think. She thinks perhaps she should get up - she’s been here long enough - but what would she do with herself then?

It’s all Constance can do right now to pray.

Well. That, and at least respond to the young woman beside her who just asked her a question. She recognises Lilith as one of the first people who talked to her when Constance arrived with the Sisters a few days ago, who showed her kindness when she felt lost and alone. Engaging her in conversation - perhaps properly thanking her - is the least Constance can do in return. ]

I - yes, it is. It’s… etherial. [ She assumes Lilith must be talking about the Church, perhaps the alter piece - the other possible meaning doesn’t even occur to her. Her voice is muted. ]
